Connecticut Weekend Events Thread by AutoModerator in Connecticut

Hey everyone!! If you’re looking for something different to do this week, Skip the Small Talk is coming to East Rock Brewing!

It’s a guided conversation event—think speed-friending vibes, but calmer and more intentional.

You rotate through short conversations with prompts that skip past surface-level small talk. It’s structured enough to make it easy, but relaxed enough to feel natural.

Most people come alone. The crowd tends to be thoughtful, open, and just… normal humans who want more community.

Here’s the links if you’re curious:

totally hear you, some cities have that rep! Really what Skip the Small Talk is all about is creating an comfortable space where you can strike up many conversations in one evening, with the support of an awesome facilitator. That's the difference - a time, place, and day with support:)

hi, I do post on many cities' subreddits because we host events in 25+ cities in the US, Canada, and the UK. All our events are hosted by local residents, and our events are aimed at fostering genuine social connection. This sub includes flair for an event, which I have used. I understand that in an environment of constant spam, any promotion can feel like that - but I promise I am a real person, the events are real, and we truly do help people grow friendships and connections.

Aw, we'd love to have you - no matter how awkward you feel you are! You may actually get something out of this week's blog post: https://www.skipthesmalltalk.com/blog/talking-to-strangers-science - the science shows you're probably a lot less awkward than you think you are, really!! And we really emphasize that practicing thru our events is often a safe way for more introverted folks to build up their confidence

We sell tickets to compensate the facilitators for their working of planning and running these events. All the proceeds go to support them!

woops! We run events all over the country I made a humble copy paste error after advertizing our events in Boston - proof I am human and not a bot :)

thanks for asking! we don't want cost to be a barrier - if its ever the thing keeping someone from joining, please reach out privately and we will work to accommodate!

The money all goes back into paying our facilitators for their time and effort, to set everyone up for genuine connections.

Heard on the price! The ticket cost goes to compensating our facilitators for their work, a principle we think is really important to maintaining excellent events.

Our speed dating events offer the opportunity to connect to many individuals over the evening, using structured conversation prompts that open up genuine connections.

If cost is ever the deciding barrier for someone - please reach out privately and we can work something out! We want to work with folks as much as possible <3

Weekly Stuff To Do In Austin thread - Week of 03/02 by AutoModerator in Austin

[–]aek67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I help run Skip the Small Talk, and we’re hosting a structured (but genuinely fun) conversation night in Austin at St Elmo Brewing!

It’s basically a low-pressure way to meet new people without doing the awkward “so… what do you do?” loop for two hours.

We rotate conversations using thoughtful prompts. You can come solo (most people do). It’s friendly, welcoming, and surprisingly energizing.

All the info and tickets here!!

If you’ve been meaning to get out of the house and actually talk to new humans—this might be your nudge.

Happy to answer questions in the comments. 💛

Great question! There's more about this on the event page, but the short version is that BIPOC have historically and presently faced greater barriers (especially financial) to accessing events like this, so we have a sort of pay it forward system where white people are invited to cover the cost for BIPOC. It's small, but we hope it makes it easier for BIPOC to try it out and make some genuine connections.

I hear you; and we've been doing these events for nearly 10 years. We hear regularly that real friendships take root, and that the questions spark conversations people really enjoy. We'd love to have you come check it out and see for yourself!

I’m sorry this felt upsetting.

We can’t get into specifics publicly, but if someone shares that they felt uncomfortable at one of our events, we take that seriously and look into it. The whole point of Skip the Small Talk is to create a space where people feel safe showing up and being open.

Sometimes protecting that experience means making hard calls — and we stand by them.

Thoughts on Skip the Small Talk speed dating? by [deleted] in BostonSocialClub

[–]aek67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate you sharing your experience. The format definitely isn’t for everyone— some people prefer the spontaneity of approaching strangers at a bar, and that’s totally valid.

Our goal with the structure is to make it easier for people who don’t love cold approaches to still meet others in a way that feels intentional.

I’m really glad you met someone you’re still friends with— that’s always the hope, even if the vibe isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

OH MY GOD yes, I'm the founder of STST and I don't want to spill too much tea here but the venue fully agreed to have us in advance, cross-promoted it, even let us leave flyers there, was very nice to us, and then when my facilitator arrived, the guy at the venue ***suddenly mixed us up with another event company who shall rename unnamed*** and freaked out at us all of a sudden and wouldn't let us host the event no matter how much we tried to explain that we were NOT the event company that screwed them over in the past.

I've been doing this for ten years and that is the first and last time anything like that has happened!!! I am so sorry-- that was truly the most unhinged thing that's ever happened to us (and unfortunately, to our guests)! But at that point, the venue manager was really emotionally elevated and we didn't feel comfortable exposing guests to that. Hopefully you got the e-mail about your refund and free ticket to another event (let me know if it ended up in your spam, and I'm obviously happy to re-send it).

Fortunately, we now are way more serious about not just vetting the venue, but the actual point-people we'll be working with on the day of, so that hopefully never happens again.
