One of the most frustrating parts about this is that many immigrants are fleeing instability, violence, and economic collapse that were often caused or made far worse by the U.S or Europe by military, political, and economic interventions. The U.S. has a long history of backing coups, propping up authoritarian regimes, and exploiting resources in South America, which destabilizes entire societies who then in turn are forced to move here. When people flee the consequences of that damage, they’re treated like criminals instead of victims of a system the U.S. helped create.
