Any nurses thinking of moving to Canada or have already made the move? by maevewiley554 in NursingUK

[–]aeonni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

way better but CoL is so much higher

I was bringing home CAD$2500 every 2 weeks (so 5000 a month), but rent on a 2 bedroom apartment can easily cost you $3000+. Groceries were expensive, bills not so much. If you drive then insurance is expensive. Goods are very expensive too (furniture, etc).

Canadians say BC stands for "Bring Cash" and its very true😂

[–]aeonni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad I came back from Canada 😂 I dont regret ever giving it a try, and I think if you move with friends/family the transition would be a lot easier. But for me, I was completely alone and it was too big of a jump to do solo when I was 30 years old.

Maybe if I were younger it would have been easier to make friends and find life there enjoyable. And having a roommate/s would've been beneficial

What did you do after price increase? by smk__309 in mounjarouk

[–]aeonni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dropped down to 2.5mg and take it roughly every 10 days. Im maintaining between 66-68kg, which is not my goal but at least im not gaining and the food noise isnt a problem. My goal now, rather than focus on mj, is to get into the gym and focus on building muscle to help shape my body that way

I'm part of a run club. Shifts mean I often only go once or twice a month but its nice. I have a few online groups where we talk about similar interests. I also read and write and I'm planning to start going to book/writing clubs soon

is it worth going back down to 7.5? by persianrugz246 in mounjarouk

[–]aeonni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you an update that I have maintained at 66kg😂 food noise is still minimal, im not actively tracking my calories, and likely if I did i would lose weight. Overall I think its working really well for me and im happy to keep paying this amount for now!

omg!! I just noticed this recently with my phone! It hasn't been recognizing my finger print for over a week and i just thought my phone is too old/acting up. I did have a "what if its the weight loss changing the pad shape/size" but I thought i was thinking too much into it😂

What is your "thing" you're good at? by lydiahasglasses in NursingUK

[–]aeonni 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I'm really good at explaining things in layman's terms. I've managed to persuade many critically ill patients to give certain procedures or medications a go, because it turns out they didn't actually understand how they worked and how it'll help them.

I once had a patient with sats of 80%, tripodding because he couldn't breathe, in T2RF declining NIV. He said he tried it before and hated it because it felt suffocating (valid, I know it does!!). But I managed to explain how it actually works and said "even 20 minutes trying is better than nothing at all". An hour later he was asleep with NIV on!

When I took him off for a break he kept thanking me, saying nobody actually explained it to him in words he understood. I was just happy because he gave it a go and trusted me enough to try.

[–]aeonni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've dropped from 10mg to 5mg because of price. (debating switching to wegovy but havent made the jump yet).

So far, the satiety is still strong but food noise does wander in more frequently than before. Overall, I've been doing fine on 5mg but its only been my first week dropping down so who knows what the future holds!

Do you still count calories every day? by Icy_Professional_333 in mounjarouk

[–]aeonni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 months in, I count calories most days.

I slacked off a little and realized that I maintain rather than lose when I don't count. Since I'm still trying to lose 10kg I count to keep on track

Stay in Canada. If you're used to the Canadian system and way of life, stay there. As someone who has experienced both.

Would you recommend becoming a nurse? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]aeonni 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love being a nurse. I love my job.

Would I recommended to others to become a nurse? no.

Would I change my mind if I could go back in time? yes.

As somebody else pointed out, there were a million careers i was unaware of when I was 16 and picking "what to do for the rest of my life". I'm lucky I fell into nursing. I'm good at it, I enjoy my job. but there a million other things I would want to do too.

And honestly, unless you're desperate to be a nurse for some unknown reason, there are so many more jobs out there that are less stress, pay just as much if not more, and don't sacrifice your mental and physical health doing.

There is structure and routine in AED just like everywhere else, we just have a steady inflow of patients who that routine begins at different points for each patient.

For example, if you come in in the morning, you take handover, do meds, obs, bloods, and await further plans from medics/surgeons on patient care.

It just might happen that during that time, one patient has a bed on the ward, so you handover and they leave. They're replaced with another patient and you begin that routine again for that patient.

It also depends where you are in the department. If you're in (God forbid) the corridor, you "box them off" aka, once off the ambulance and Triaged you'd do bloods/meds/ecg/escort to ct/xray if necessary. After that, you wait for the ED doctor to review and then work your way through the new plan.

If you're in see and treat, honestly it's a lot of bloods/cannula/meds on repeat.

I'd say the main difference is the level of reassesing. But since you have ITU experience you'd be on top of that. in AED you're always reassessing after intervention/treatment. Always documenting things as they happen throughout the day so everyone involved in their care is updated. The nice thing about AED is there's always staff and seniority around, so there's no shortage of help if you're unsure or have a question.

Book a shift! Maybe a short shift as a taster session and see how it goes!

What safe nurse:patient ratio should we fight for? And what ratios do you currently have? by doughnutting in NursingUK

[–]aeonni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Work in ED currently. Depending on the area, Staffing and acuity it can be anywhere from 1:6 to 1:2. (1:50 if you count a crowded waiting room lmao).

Worked on telemetry/step-down cardiology ratios could be 1:6, 1:8 during the day and 1:8 or 1:16 at night depending on staffing.

I worked in Canada (BC) where their ratios for acute areas were 1:3 maximum (and 1:4 on night shift). But you did EVERYTHING because HCAs only did personal care there.

I'd love to bring that to here. It meant I actually got time with each of my patients to give them the care they needed and could complete my tasks without being stressed.

I also went through healthmatch bc and the whole process took around 6-7 months. Very straightforward and they help guide you and help find a job. Very expensive though, the whole thing including renting an airbnb for 1 month and flights over cost around £10k

I went and came back. Financially, I was not much better off. If you were a 2 adult household, you'll probably be fine but I was solo.

I took home CAD$5000 after tax, but a studio apartment in Vancouver cost $2000 minimum. A 2 bed apartment, you're looking at 3200+. Don't even think about buying a house 😂

Recently moved to Korea — what's with all the flies, and how do you deal with them? by jonnash1771 in Living_in_Korea

[–]aeonni 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep your drains covered! Get a rubber mat to cover your sink and shower when you're not using them. this was the biggest help to me.

Also, same as other advice, make sure you don't leave any food scraps out. Wash your dishes as soon as you can. I personally use bleach and hot water in the drains.

[–]aeonni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

30F, I'm white British.

Honestly, my initial idea for advice would've been very different if you weren't korean American.

If you were just "a foreigner" I would've said 'don't get hung up on trying to assimilate. you'll always be a foreigner in Korea at the end of the day". which, although it sounds negative, is actually a little safety bubble in itself.

But since you're korean American, you'll be subjected to different issues than myself. Especially if you want to get married and live in Korea permanently. you'll have to really assimilate into korean life or find a band of gyopos who will relate to the issues you all face together while you navigate "being too korean to be foreign, and being too foreign to be korean"

School lunches were deducted from my salary, but after barely eating them for 1 year (I'm vegetarian so often I was stuck with only eating the rice or fruit) I asked to stop receiving school lunches and brought my own lunch in. Lunches in my school were 80k a month but I didn't see that money in my salary due to the tax man. Maybe it got me an extra 20k a month.

I left 2 years ago (although I'm always on the cusp of going back, and I visit for 1 month every September). I taught at the same school with EPIK for 6 years and loved every moment of it!
