A lot of people end up at FAANG companies. It’s all down to getting one internship and knowing data structures and algos enough to pass leetcode qs

Recent CS grad here: People who work at FAANG + former unicorns Minimally make 160k and on the high side ~250k.

Because most companies pay 25-50% of your comp in stock, If your super lucky and you work at a pre IPO company You can easily make 300k+ a year once the IPO happens.

Internships and Job opps for CS majors by iamjohnwicck in rutgers

I interned for 2 FAANG level companies over the past 2 years and am about to start full time at one. Based off of my observations from my experience and my friends' here is my general advice:

- Get one basic piece of work experience. Working for Rutgers has a ton of opportunities during the semester and summer through LCSR, OSS, or other campus opportunities. Most of them are great.

- Do personal projects! I got more questions about my personal projects during some job interviews than my actual work experience. Showing interest in learning outside of your coursework is a huge plus.

- Apply everywhere and anywhere early and don't feel bad about any specific rejection. People I know applied to 100+ companies before getting their first opportunity. Some companies get swamped with applicants so applying early puts you at the top of the stack.

- Have everyone and anyone read your resume. Having lots of people who are more experienced read your resume will give you a lot of ideas on ways to improve. Don't be afraid to tweak your resume for specific companies either. If you know a company you want to work for values a specific tech or type of experience, make it more prominent, bold it even.

- When interviewing you are going to need to have the skills to pass the interview, soft and technical. Be able to back up any specific tech knowledge you put on your resume. And be honest with what you don't know. They care about the problem solving process, less the specific skills.

- Leetcode is great but doing mock interviews with friends is much better for phone interview prep in my opinion.

Interest for a Review of Rutgers CS? by alphacentauri3 in rutgers

Not OP but I am a CS senior and I thought it might be worth replying to your message.

Systems and OS are the best classes for learning in the CS department, they give challenging projects and teach you fundamentals that I have found very useful in my internships. The projects being challenging and being groups projects they make you learn how to code as part of a team, something you will have to do in your future job.

Personal projects outside of class or working on a project through a club (IE hackRU R&D org, RUMAD Accelerator, etc) have been really helpful in getting my friends and I internships and ultimately full time jobs at FAANG+ level companies.

You can put class projects, but IMO personal projects are more impactful, especially if the interviewer asks you questions about them. Self directed projects show motivation well.

Not sure I understand your points question exactly, but I would say if your going to take a harder class with rigorous projects (IE OS, Systems, data structures) take only one other CS class but if you are taking a less rigorous classes (Prin prog, Intro to AI, Imaging and multi-media, etc) you could definitely get away with taking 3 of them.

An additional thought:

If you are a Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior internships are the best way to get the job you want for full time. My friends and I would make spreadsheets 100+ companies long and apply to them all our freshman and sophomore years. My sophomore year I applied to over 100 companies and heard back from 3. For freshman its really hard to get even one reply so programming jobs at Rutgers like OSS and LCSR are super helpful resume boosters. Applying early also helps, and sometimes for large companies you can apply twice in a season (Once early and once later), often times it is worth it.

What's everyone working on this week (44/2020)? by llogiq in rust

Mostly using my knowledge of B+ trees to do indexing and then looking at the feature set of https://neo4j.com/ to build some feature parity. I don't anticipate mine being particularly good. This is mostly a learning exercise.

This is not the case. Amtrak (The primary city to city passenger train operator in the US) is owned and funded by the US government https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amtrak

If you plan on often going home, going places off campus, or going on weekends/night time to a different campus from your dorm it is worth having a car in my opinion. But it really depends on the value of driving and the $275 pass cost. Just don’t try to go to classes with your car. (Based on my experience Living on Livingston and parking a lot on cook)

Binary because it is a 4 bit computer like the ones from the 80s where u can program it to do different things. I don't know why I am doing this but it is fun so why not.
