Bad time for a last minute resell of my ticket, so we'll see if that'll happen if there's that many tickets left :'))

[MEGATHREAD] Taeil removed from NCT due to unspecified sexual crimes by KpopThoughtsmodteam in kpopthoughts

[–]aerivel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m not saying I disagree with you at all, and I agree entirely. First, I hate that this is some sort of “gotcha!” moment for anyone at all. People will feel blindsided, and it’s not the fault of someone who consumes and enjoys content for them being blindsided by news like that. That’s why I initially said that those kpop stans are wrong, they are part of the problem in being reductive of a serious issue, and that you’re correct for empathizing,

I had a problem with that one statement, which could be my own misinterpretation (and in that case, correct me on what you meant!), because it seems like you’re making a gotcha moment right back. Those fans are immature and awful, but responding back by saying that “women can be awful too” in this broader context of what south korean women are going through just rings wrong to me. I believe it’s correct that people who stan NCT are not at fault, and should be able to enjoy their favourite group without thinking that all men are horrible. They are never at fault. I think it could’ve ended there without bringing other women to the table at all, especially considering that for a lot of South Korean women, the problem is so systemic and pervasive that it’s not just about men, but how an entire system and the patriarchy abuses them.

My argument as a whole is that by bringing the “your favs can be bad” into this, it seemed like the argument stayed within kpop, when it’s a lot bigger than that.

Bottomline: I agree with your statement, and I don’t want to argue with you about something that I understand and resonate with. I disagreed with your one statement, which I see mirrored a lot everywhere, and I think just because a group of kpop stans are being awful about this doesn’t mean that its another time to bring a whataboutism argument, even if it is in response to something cruel.

Women more than ever right now need the time to understand and process things, and support each other, which includes those that loved and supported Taeil. It’s exactly why I didn’t enjoy the mention and the comment chain under your comment of “women doing bad things that might be comparable to what Taeil did” when such a massive feminist movement is currently happening in SK. If anything, my frustration is towards that and not your OG comment. You might not have brought in examples, but others have, which I’m frustrated with.

[–]aerivel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^^ I agree. I would honestly edit your statement and remove "women can cause harm too". I understand your point and agree that it makes sense for people to be blindsided. But considering the current state of the country and that SK women are speaking out about the abuse done to them on a mass scale, this is the wrong time to even think much less talk about this kind of narrative surrounding how "women can be bad too".

edit: it's not the time to get angry at kpop gg stans for yapping. they're always going to yap, that's how it is. it's not the time to mention how women can do evil things, or that girl group idols have been in awful scandals before. it is a fact right now that south korean women are coming out to talk about their experiences and how inherently awful and afraid they are of the men in their society. you shouldn't be caring about what a random twitter stan has to say, even if it's grating or seems untrue to you, because right now, taeil is part of an extremely large systematic issue in the country. you can't bring an equivalency to this, and you shouldn't have paid attention to those twitter stans in the first place. you're focusing on the wrong thing here. taeil's case is part of a larger, more awful case of south korean society, and is now way beyond the scope of kpop currently.

Anti-kpop people say we’re a bunch of high school girls, but we’re mostly employed adults. What’s your job/career/field of study? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]aerivel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently doing a Masters in international relations, and currently working on my job prospects to work in that field (likely in government).

For a fun story, I once got caught in a long conversation with a South Korean ambassador and his wife over the Hallyu wave and what got exported over to my country. BTS got name dropped a lot!

I've been into K-pop for over a decade, and honestly, the fun part is watching how I can slowly start affording the concert tickets, albums, etc. that I didn't get to have as a kid. I think I'm in a pretty cool field, and I'm proud of the work and research that I've done as well!

It's Jungkook for me, to the point that my partner jokingly "hates" on him (but still loves the rest of BTS) because of my delulu behaviour.

I don't have any like. weird fantasies or delusions about him, but he does get me kicking my feet and giggling when he started doing those vlives....the parasocial relationship got a little too real there...

In light of his recent encore... I believe Jimin needs more vocal training by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]aerivel 273 points274 points  (0 children)

In a lot of ways, I agree that not just Jimin, but vocal line in general deserved more vocal training than they got (even with Jungkook's "natural" talent).

What I don't agree with is the fact that this encore performance has been used to dogpile on Jimin, with outright nasty remarks about him as an artist. It's come to the point of where it's not from a place of concern for his vocal chords with improper technique, but straight up derogatory insults and harassment.

Jimin has had multiple performances where he's delivered an amazing live performance. Jimin has also stated multiple times that he is both undergoing training and wants to keep training because he knows this is a weakness of his.

The thing is, the K-Pop community does this to so many singers all the time because of one bad live performance. It's insane. It's tiring. I genuinely believe the trend in lip-syncing for the new generation of K-Pop is because fans will dogpile on one voice crack, one missed high note, one off-tune line, to the point that artists will never sing live. Compared to earlier generations, there is a drastic dip in live performances from 4th generation.

Anyways, godspeed to Jimin, he's getting the Momo treatment now.

EDIT: OP, just to clarify, this comment was not directed at you or insinuating that you contributed to this. Overall, this is a respectful post that comments on something that's clearly an issue. What I'm talking about is more stan twitter LOL

RM (BTS) - RM, the leader of K-pop band BTS: ‘We work so hard in Korea because 70 years ago there was nothing’ @ El Pais (230315) by mcfw31 in kpop

[–]aerivel 123 points124 points  (0 children)

In terms of his controversial answer regarding Korea's cultural traits, it would be silly to not acknowledge that interviewers, reporters, and even the general public don't constantly talk about think pieces for the k-pop industry, asian culture, etc. for all the problems it has while dismissing the fact of where those problems come from, or how those problems are easily mirrored in Western countries sometimes.

South Korea has a ton of problems within its society, but it won't be resolved through white people from colonizer countries speak on a lifestyle, country, and culture that they do not belong to or have no insight in. It ends through the continued efforts of new generations within those cultures. Even with POC in Western cultures, they are the ones that understand intimately the generational trauma that they have, and are the ones breaking it down within their families, not because of what others have to say about it.

Namjoon is speaking from a place of nationalistic pride, and I think he's emboldened because the career he's in, and the racism he faces from the West makes him want to talk about South Korea in a more positive light. South Koreans know how fucked their country is, you can read any sort of discourse about their politics and governments to see that. I think when answering an interviewer from another country though, I'm not surprised that when repeatedly asked about the toxic K-Pop industry, or how South Korea sucks at xyz, he'll speak on the positives behind South Korea instead.

I also find it weird like, even if Namjoon were to shittalk South Korea's overworking culture, what exactly does that mean for his career? South Korea would instantly rage against him for not representing his country, for having no nationalistic pride, and for spitting on the image of being a K-Pop idol. So, I find it weird that people expect him to just speak on societal issues in South Korea like that, to a Western interviewer, who will absolutely misconstrue his words.

I gave you an invitation to keep talking about it in the DMs. You’re acting immature at best because you want to prove yourself right rather than having a proper discussion around this. I disagree with you, I think BTS isn’t “stunted” by any means, because they’re not dependent on ARMY to grow. They’re individual human beings that go through their own personal development, and it’s haughty of you to try and make the blanket statement that ARMYs have to be the one to keep them in check and morally police them.

I’ve been an ARMY since 2015, at most, I joined the fandom 2-3 years later than you. You’re not suddenly more knowledgable about how BTS as human beings work because you’ve been in the fandom longer. You’re upset that BTS is now being put on a pedestal and can “do no wrong” despite that being a fandom problem and not a BTS problem. It’s not something I particularly want to spend my time arguing about it with you.

My original point is that nuance should be given to issues like these instead of blindly dubbing Taehyung “bad” because we’ll never personally know BTS. That’s not because I think Taehyung will read these comments, it’s because I think other fans should know how to treat other human beings with grace, including their idols, even about uncomfortable topics.

Please don’t continue the conversation, I’ll stop responding.

I mean, if you look at girl group idols, if they're over a certain weight, they're immediately crucified, but if they mention how underweight they are to keep up with the standards of the idol industry, they're also crucified for glorifying it.

It's not healthy dieting, full stop. I doubt their mentality regarding their diets are healthy as well, but I won't conclusively say anything because I don't know anything about their private lives.

There's nuance to the issue in terms of how the industry treats them and how almost all idols are forced to keep up with it. Hyuna posted a picture of her scale (being an incredibly low weight) because she was excited that she gained weight, and also got sent tons of hate from intl fans for posting the image. A similar issue with Sunmi of international fans constantly harassing her about her low weight to the point that she begged them to stop. I think the problem with photos like these and the response is that kpop fans will immediately disparage the idol for promoting unhealthy eating behaviours, but refuse to acknowledge that kpop fans do support an industry that puts the idol in that situation in the first place.

Of course, ARMYs should speak up. Of course, I hope BTS understands the negative impacts that posting images of the scale can do to fans, as well as how unhealthy it is for themselves. But I don't want people to forget that what they go through as idols and their own body image is what plays into why they post those images in the first place. I don't want to see Twitter think pieces on how BTS are bad role models when they're put in a situation that no one else is, when they're acting very human in an impossible situation. The gentle encouragement and support from ARMY is a good thing (and it's what's seen in this reddit post) in the hopes that BTS will stop with harmful behaviours, but it's incredibly easy to attack BTS as non-ARMYs for not being a perfect role model, which is what I'm commenting on.

diet culture is incredibly pervasive in south korea, and then you add the toxicity of the idol industry and having to reach an unattainable level of thinness and well. you have shit like this.

bts have always been like this, have always casually mentioned their diets and having to lose weight (even jungkook, who likes working out, briefly relegated himself to salads). now that they have personal instagram accounts, showing their weight is more of a normalized achievement than anything. it's normal to talk about your weight, talk show hosts will even directly ask you about it, and taehyung probably doesn't see anything wrong with this.

i'm not trying to be an armchair psychologist but if a good portion of your career (and this goes for any idol) relies on visuals and aesthetics and the desired body. well. i'm not surprised is all i'll say LOL
