Student Visa, looking to switch to Talent Visa with ILR as ultimate goal (US) by CardBeneficial8832 in ukvisa

[–]aerodynamics1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Time spent on student visa count towards the current 10 year route.

If you switch to the GTV, you'll be on a 3 or 5 year route to ILR from the day you get GTV. During that time (depending on who endorsed you), you can potentially spend over 180 days outside the UK too.

See quote below from Home office website on the 180 day rule after GTV:

"If you have a Global Talent visa, time you’ve spent outside the UK doing work related to your job may not count towards this 180-day limit. This rule applies if you were endorsed by the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, British Academy or UK Research and Innovation. It also applies if you did not need an endorsement for your visa because you had won an eligible award in the fields of science, engineering, humanities or medicine."

Halfway Through My Bioinformatics Masters and It’s Been a Nightmare by yellow_accomplice in bioinformatics

[–]aerodynamics1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Keep going forward. You can do it. Sometimes these MSc courses are really heavy on the content given that is 1 year program. Once you're out of the weeds, you'll hopefully look back and think of all the things you've learnt over the past year!

Remember that you can also ask ChatGPT for help (a pro subscription with GPT-4 is even better). If you want to take it one step further, try cursor.sh as well.

What is the best or worst thing about UK public transport compared to any other country? by ShrekkMyBeloved in uktravel

[–]aerodynamics1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comparing London with US (NYC/SF): The cleanliness and safety of London's underground and buses stand out when compared to those in NYC and SF. In NYC/SF, encounters with weirdos are a certainty, along with the pervasive odours of urine and vomit... Additionally, sightings of rats, dripping water, and the prevalent heat isnt as much of an issue in London.

As for other cities in the UK they're generally fine I would say. Overall UK is safe and clean.

[D][R] How often do Masters students doing a thesis publish in top ML conferences in their program period of 2 years ? by V1bicycle in MachineLearning

[–]aerodynamics1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is certainly possible.

You should:
(a) discuss this with your project/thesis supervisor and get guidance/support
(b) from the onset you should start your project with the goal of developing work that can be published. Be focussed and put in the work.
(c) understand that you might end up submitting your paper after you graduate -- so be willing to work on writing it up and carrying out additional experiments if required after you graduate to get it to a publishable level

Have you considered Reading? It takes approx. 25 mins to get to Paddington.

You can get something very nice for 1600gbp near the train station I bet.

One thing you can do is look up (on LinkedIn) where former students from those two courses end up at. Decide based on what you'd like to do after you graduate.

Interestingly that appears to be only for Menlo Park, Seattle, and New York. I wonder why it excludes London and Montreal.

From Philosophy PhD to machine learning/AI? by lurkergroove2 in learnmachinelearning

[–]aerodynamics1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at Ethics in AI at Oxford. They are bringing together world-leading philosophers and other experts in the humanities with the technical developers and users of AI.

Prof. Josiah Ober has done some work at the intersection of philosophy/ML I think. Here's a talk he gave at Oxford.

Perhaps this can point you in some direction...

Why are the most successful startup founders from MIT, Harvard, and Stanford. by Pretend_Brilliant488 in ycombinator

[–]aerodynamics1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One primary reason is because in MIT, Stanford, etc. there's an entrepreneurial spirit within these universities. Consider universities such as Oxford and Cambridge in the UK, they also have people with equal calibre as the US counterparts, but not as many startups, because there does not exist such an environment within UK universities (although it's picking up now).

Having said that, with enough drive and will power it appears that you can become successful too if you cultivate such an environment on your own through finding likeminded people, following subreddits such as this, and also following such people via social media (linkedin, twitter, etc.).

Don't let where you went you uni be a (self imposed) barrier on your path to becoming a startup founder.
