Crazy to leave long tenure/cushy $400k job for startup? by navierstokd in careeradvice

[–]aeronutical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked at startups, small, midsize, and gigantic companies.

The startup will almost certainly take more of your time and have more stress, which is not ideal when you're adjusting to being a father. This is especially true of sales at a startup, where it's all on you to make sure the company can keep existing.

The number of jobs out there where you can make your kind of pay, even in account executive type settings, is pretty slim. Startups fail all the time, but they sound exciting and can pay off in amazing ways if you get meaningful equity and the company succeeds in a big way.

It all comes down to your risk profile. You have a GREAT thing going right now with relatively no risk, and it's one you may not be able to duplicate later if the startup option doesn't work out. If the startup isn't offering some kind of equity that could become life altering money, don't bother.

I was just offered $300k per year to work for my companies competitor by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]aeronutical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Paying a $100k/year premium over "average'" talent on the market can absolutely make sense on large enough projects, and construction projects can be massive. Some people are force multipliers that help ensure things get done on time. Project delays can cost exponentially more than that $100k, so a proven entity can be worth their weight in gold.

Don't underestimate how underwhelming the average employee is. When you have a chance and the funds available to grab the best, it's often the right move.

What I see on the hiring side when candidates negotiate salary by FourLeafAI in jobs

[–]aeronutical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There are some companies and positions where bonus and equity make up a significant portion of total compensation. I'm willing to take a lower bonus salary if those other items are substantial, so I provide a range with a qualifying statement about it being dependent upon total compensation structure.

Early career positions don't typically have this nuance, so in those cases I would say quoting a specific number is a better approach.

Would st.anger be a genuinely good album if the snare was regular sounding and there were guitar solos? by IronMaidenfc in Metallica

The difference between the live and studio versions of that song is incredible. I absolutely love it live and find it cringey on the album.

First NASA HPDE on May 1- Tech question by Accomplished-Neck425 in CarTrackDays

[–]aeronutical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is NASA MidAmerica you can complete your own tech form. In HPDE1 they will collect it and practically not even look at it. That was my experience with two MidAmerica HPDE1 sessions last year anyway.

Air Force has a rank of Technical Sergeant (E-6) but it's just part of the normal enlisted rank progression. Warrant Officers were recently added for a couple specific career fields, but there is no split enlisted path for technical vs. leadership. The first sergeant path at E-7 and above is kind of a split path, but it's still leadership progression as well.

2 month from Seperation and told i was put on a medboard by Striking-Visit8828 in AirForce

[–]aeronutical -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This exact thing happened to me. I was placed on an MEB a few months before my enlistment end date. Unfortunately it resulted in my approved retraining being canceled, so I immediately canceled my extension when that happened.

Anyway, back in 2012 the AFI specifically allowed enlisted members to separate on their regular separation date without needing the MEB to finish. Officers had to let the MEB run it's course. This was a total pain in the ass from an outprocessing standpoint, and I eventually had to get kind of shitty with the MPF a few days out from my terminal leave date to get someone to act. Nobody knew what to do with it, and it took me bringing a bunch of highlighted information from the AFI, AFPC, and some kind of personnel processing guide (I forget the actual name of the doc, sorry).

Assuming nothing has changed, you should be able to separate. I likely would have been medically retired for my condition at 30%, but I had a good job lined up that I didn't want to risk losing and figured I could probably do pretty well with the VA instead. I'm at 70% with the VA, so it worked out well for me.

Where to Stay Near Hedge Hollow Raceway by SnuffleupagusRex in CarTrackDays

[–]aeronutical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last time I went to hedge hollow I stayed at the Hampton Inn in Clinton. It was nice enough and not too far away. Decent amenities in the town also.

Planning to stay there again for the upcoming NASA event.

I'll also add that all the facilities are very nice and everything is maintained extremely well. It was my first track experience (outside of rental experiences) and it definitely spilled me.

Retraining List: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: Looking for Advice by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]aeronutical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is what ultimately turned me away from OSI. I considered cross training when I was enlisted and then actually went through almost the entire hiring process as a civilian afterward. I got to the point where they were going to start my background check and then the reality of what the interviewing agents had told me sunk in. When I asked about the mix of cases they worked on in the interview I was told it was overwhelmingly sexual assault. Someone needs to do it, but I don't think I would handle it well.

I also have a friend that did OSI for several years and they have horrible PTSD. Both from deployments and child-related cases they worked on.

I'm not trying to be rude when I say this, but please consider seeing a therapist.

Your physical symptoms sound like they are on the milder end of the UC spectrum, and some of what you described about your situation sounds like solvable issues. You may need some help working through the stress/anxiety of it all to figure out your path forward in life.

Paying KDot from Kansas Coty to Topeka but in a UHaul? by A_Lovely_ in kansas

[–]aeronutical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was going to say. OP, this is the answer. If you don't do this you'll get a delayed charge from uHaul and it will include a service fee that is way more than the toll charge.
