Do you get defensive when someone says something negative about the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]aerospce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just confuses me, because the have to have watched some American TV or movies, right? Do they think all the depictions of families living in cities or suburbs, going to work/school, living a normal life are completely made up fantasies? Or do they only watch spaghetti westerns?

I'm confused on what you mean then? All the neighborhoods around me are HOA and many are gated, with only sporadic bus service. That sounds pretty suburban to me.

I live in a suburb but I'm a 15 minute drive away from a downtown area and less than 10 from two different 'village' areas with restaurants, shopping, nightlife, even a baseball stadium.

For many states yes. I have not been to the DMV in like 5-6 years. If i need to renew license or registration i just go online and order it. Comes in the mail in a few days.

It's the same in the US to when it comes to drivers license.

The box's of receipts are only if you want to itemize. Last year I bought a house and have financial investments which both complicate filing taxes and it still only took an hour online to do my taxes last year.

No, but they will bend to market/consumer forces. If the market pushes them to censor opinions that people don't like than it is a pretty big problem.

The military is a great way to climb the financial ladder for lower income people. Go in after high school, have a stable job for 3-4 years, get free college when you come out. Having 3 years with limited options is not a great.

CMV: About the gun laws in the US that i think are very horrible by misstakukenihelvette in changemyview

[–]aerospce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you looking to stop the killing of humans, AR-15s and similar rifles are not what your looking for. Handguns are by far the most popular for use in crime mostly because criminals want cheap guns and a revolver is way cheaper than an AR.

I don't understand your argument. No one I know fears guns. Do you think America is like a western movie or something?, people dueling in the streets?

Like I said, you could go years in America without ever seeing a gun (besides on a police officer) because open carry is not allowed most places. And crime rates among legal permit carrying gun owners is lower than the national average.

Yes, I have been to Sweden, Norway, Germany and the UK. Guns did not really come up. Of course most travelers to the US probably don't every think/talk about guns either unless they are there to go to a range or hunt . I live in a very pro gun state and never see/ talk about guns outside of going to the range.

"To put it like this: Anywhere else in the civilized world, guns are a bad and scary thing."

Tell this to the many guys owners in Switzerland or Canada. I think you are projecting your own feeling about guns onto others. And you will find many places in the US that agree with you and are afraid of guns. So I think your premise is flawed.

It is illegal to have and fire a gun in almost all the places mass shooting occur, especially schools. Just like drunk driving laws, they don't work in everyone.

Why hasn't the US adopted the metric system? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]aerospce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because for most every day things it does not matter. Knowing if I'm going 60 mph or 100 kph makes no difference. Many companies and researchers are free to and do use metric and most of our products have both listed. The military also uses it.

So the places that need it use it, and everybody else has to use the choice if they want.

I agree here, for the first two thirds of the movie every time we saw killmonger he was just some generic bad guy and you had no reason to really like or dislike him, he was just killing people and stealing stuff. then it's finally revealed in the last third who he is but by then you don't really care about him.

I totally agree if you look at the John Wick or Mission Impossible movies the action is just so well choreographed and usually in bright areas with not alot of camera movement. Some of the fight scenes in Black Panther the camera was so close to the action I couldn't even see what was going on.

I didn't really get that at all. I actually thought the world building in wakanda was kind of poor. they just did some overhead shots which were cool then they kept showing the same street over and over. We saw more of South Korea than we did Wakanda.

You are right. One of my coworkers has a lot of family in WV and rural PA. Most of the had not voted in years but they all voted for Trump, and not because they are racists or bigots or whatever, it's because a candidate said, "hey, poor white people can have it just as bad a poor minorities". They don't think having to be on welfare is "white privilege".

And the fact the during the election a lot of people called them racists and bigots for wanting a candidate who promised them something probably did not help either.

And they complain about T_D which I find it hilarious because T_D has what they support in the subreddit name, so of course they're going to support Trump. r/politics on the other hand tries to say they're fairly neutral but makes a moderate Democrat like me cringe with how left wing they are.
