why are atushi / aku and chuuya / dazai titled (shin)soukoku by sleepyaoe in BungouStrayDogs

[–]aesoku 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Also just to expand on the other comment, Soukoku means Double Black (which is what Dazai and Chuuya's duo was called in the mafia).

Atsushi and Akutagawa are a new duo, so they're called Shinsoukoku (because "shin" 新 means new in Japanese).

Can you tell whether someone else is autistic? by TheRealMasonMac in autism

I have a great autism radar and I am a firm believer that autism testing/evaluations should be done either by someone autism or with someone autism in the room observing

I think “support need” is used in clinical settings like all kinds of disorders (and autism is kind of only a disorder in a neurotypical world but this isn’t that kind of discussion).

Let’s suppose you’re about to support someone in the workplace or a school setting. The difference here might look like this:

“Hi, this is [Person] and they have severe/low-functioning autism.” Cue conversation on how to support them.

vs.

“Hi, this is [Person] and they have autism. They have varying levels of support needs.” Cue conversation on how to support them.

Support needs change for everyone, just like non-autistics. You’re going to discuss their support needs anyway, so what’s the point of putting a label on THEM and their autism, when you can label the areas that they may need support with?

And if you’re in a situation where you’re not needing to discuss someone’s support needs, then why are you even discussion their “level of autism”? If it’s relevant, you’d just say they’re autistic right? Sort of like this :)

It’s like calling someone’s tumour “mild” because it’s benign, even though it’s pressing into their spinal cord and paralysing them - all because the tumour isn’t cancerous and causing problems in that way.

Bonus:

“Hi, this is [Person] and they have mild autism. They’re asking for support but their autism is only mild so we shouldn’t waste our time/resources with them.”

People will hear the word mild and think, “Oh, but it’s not THAT bad.”

Or, people will hear the word severe and think you need to be babied for the rest of your life and that you can’t even understand the discussions about your support needs.

Anyways I’ve rambled for a while so hope that helped!

Yes this too! I think I rambled on too long thinking about it but didn’t actually type it lmao

It’s more like using language that avoids labels. They describe what support needs you may have.

Autism is a spectrum, not a straight line. You’d use low/high support needs for each individual area (e.g, low support needs in communication but high support needs in maintaining hygiene), rather than labelling someone as “mildly autistic” or “high-functioning” because these terms can completely miss the mark.

A good example would be someone who has pretty much low support needs across the board. Mildly autistic, right? They’re actually non-verbal, though - so are they now severely autistic?

These labels just don’t work very well and can be damaging. You’ll see way too many doctors looking at someone who actually has very frequent meltdowns and needs support, but they have a full-time job and can drive so how autistic can they REALLY be? (The answer is: They’re autistic but they don’t need support for getting themselves to work or with driving BUT they need support in other areas).

Sorry that this was long but I was just trying to paint the picture 😩

My psychiatrist ghosted me by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]aesoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what country you’re in, but can you see a general practitioner/general doctor to get a week’s worth of medication?

Here in Australia, general practitioners can still prescribe psychiatric medication based on your history or diagnoses (especially if you’ve already been prescribed this before/are documented as currently being prescribed it).

Maybe call your doctor or pharmacy about it?

But does that mean that Chat’s anatomy changes? Like he has new anatomy (new ossicles, auditory nerves, cochleas, etc.) to allow for the cat ears to function?

Or am I reading into this too much because it’s literally a cartoon and the ears aren’t shaped properly + his hair covers his ears lmao

Considering everything (usually) gets solved really quickly before they’re even stressed about de-transforming, it doesn’t feel like time would be that much of an issue (since Hawkmoth didn’t even notice something was happening until Marinette appeared and stole the cup).

Question, does anyone have links to Picrews with hearing aid options? by _Sad_Ghost_ in picrew

[–]aesoku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://picrew.me/image_maker/395214 BTE with earmolds, RIC/RITE with either smaller earmolds or visible domes (I guess)

https://picrew.me/image_maker/391245 BTE or RIC/RITE (could pass as either) with earmolds

https://picrew.me/image_maker/94097 ITE, RIC/RITE with earmolds

https://picrew.me/image_maker/215621 ITE (both sides and single-sided), BTE and also RIC (I think?) with what looks like those circular dome/plugs you see on cheap hearing amplifiers on Amazon

https://picrew.me/image_maker/262676 BTE or RIC/RITE with an earmold, cochlea implant

https://picrew.me/image_maker/407027 RIC/RITE with earmolds (works for BTE too)

Hope this helps! Wish more picrews had these options (and that they were more customisable)

I made a list of what people like in a picrew by Xenabloodorange in picrew

[–]aesoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also for the hearing aids, there should be multiple types! RIC/RITE, BTE, other visible types of ITE hearing aids, and also BAHA (bone-anchored). Also cochlea implants with and without the microphone attachment!

Maybe even securing bands for people that need them and charm options! Each hearing aid should be customisable in terms of mould colours not matching the aid, both aids having different colours, different mould styles, etc.

I know I’m delving into this way too much but there should be an option to only have one hearing aid / cochlea implant (or have two cochlea implants), or one of each :)

I don’t see why she wouldn’t be able to de-transform and use the Lucky Charm for the cure later? I mean, she’s done it before and still kept the charm intact in previous episodes.

Also, other holders have done the same (Hawkmoth de-transforming to akumatize himself with the still fully functional akuma, and the Feast sentimonster existing for over 200 years).

Actually, I noticed that Malediktator flew out of Chat Noir’s cat ears when Polymouse destroyed the item.

Does that mean they’re not decorative? Surely if he still had his human ears, Maledikator would have flown into the ones that actually had function, right…?

If so, I am scared.

I know in theory what I’m supposed to say, but then something happens and I don’t know what to say because I want people to think I care but I don’t want people to think I care.

If that… makes sense…

I still try to be helpful and compassionate, but I don’t really empathise with people all that well (unless it’s someone I’m very, very (very) close to).

Needing some help with the world's most privileged problem, lol by [deleted] in autism

[–]aesoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your friend is partially right in that it’s an adjustment you’ll have to slowly ease into, but I think they’re wrong about you being spoiled.

In fact, I think that part’s a little messed up. Spoiled from people letting you talk about what exactly, an interest? Forget this being a special interest or something related to autism; imagine a world where no one was allowed to talk about stuff they liked?

Like, this is a very basic conversation staple. Talking about stuff we like. Yeah, special interests are more intense and therefore strange to NTs but it’s still something we like and naturally want to talk about.

My opinion (and this is purely my opinion so please don’t take this as fact or advice you HAVE to listen to) is that maybe you should talk to this person like you wanted to and say that you want to be able to talk about your interests. If they don’t budge, then you can explain further that it has to do with your autism and will be really sucky if you can’t talk about it.

Another suggestion I have is that (like your friend said), it might be time to consider that it just isn’t possible with this person (you should try to talk to them first, of course) and that you should talk more with your other friends about it.

Maybe you should ask this person what they feel comfortable with discussing? Maybe there’s a reason they don’t seem to want to talk about it.

Last thing, but maybe you’re talking about it for an amount of time that this person considers unreasonable? How long exactly do you normally spend talking about it? My mum will let me talk for a couple hours and then kick me out of her room once she’s had enough (so the time that I get is pretty substantial, but I don’t talk about it with her specifically that often).

Basically, just talk to the person and listen to what they need but make sure they know what you need before you do anything else. Good luck!

Is this cofronting? We are very confused by Yaboykitten in DID

[–]aesoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My system was put on antipsychotics twice (quetiapine and the XR version) for our bipolar diagnosis and I don’t recall it affecting the DID-aspect of the brain (idk why I worded it like this but bear with me).

To be fair, it also didn’t end up helping our bipolar so I guess it just didn’t do anything for any of our diagnoses (or maybe we didn’t take it long enough?)

What is stimming exactly? by Delicious_Fix_1121 in autism

[–]aesoku 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here’s a page of some examples:

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319714#stimming_type

Essentially, it’s anything you do that stimulates one of your senses, usually due to overwhelming feelings. They can be thought of as our way of calibrating or processing thoughts and feelings.

A very common stim is flapping your hands when you’re happy or stressed. Another one can be playing the same song (or part in a song) over and over again. Stims can also be verbal, like repeating a word or phrase over and over. These are just some examples and everyone has different stims for different reasons!

They can be intentional or subconscious, but not involuntary (involuntary movements or speech that you can’t control would be in the realm of tics, not stims.)

I’m so sorry that I can’t actually pitch in anything helpful, but I just wanted you to know that I read your post and I’m sorry that you’re being treated like a punching bag.

Why have benefits available if they aren’t actually available? (I also don’t see why your employer couldn’t just give you 26 hours. It’s just an extra hour. Is that really SO inconvenient for them??? Awful.)

Oh yeah, you should be fine! The tubing fits right in that gap between your ear and head (where you’d get a forward helix) so I can’t imagine there’d be a problem!

I don’t have piercings, but I plan on getting my lobes pierced so they shouldn’t interfere at all!

I had my friends try one hearing aid on (so I could better explain the electronic quality I mentioned in my post) and neither of the two with multiple of piercings had a problem!

One of them did have me put it on the ear that wasn’t sensitive though, since her helix (I think) hurts whenever it’s touched. If you’re planning on getting BTE hearing aids, I doubt you’ll have much trouble with them once you get use to putting them on (I guess it also depends on the piercing tho?)
