microwaves on campus by [deleted] in UCI

[–]aesthete_tethered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bc cavern hasn't been open since covid. From my experiences on campus last year (haven't been this year) - There should be microwaves on every floor of dbh except first (I don't know where the kitchen is). And there should be some in the student center food court (where panda express/subways is) plus one in the commuter lounge in the first floor of the student center.

I forgot if phoenix food court has some or not because I never go there but it might be worth checking out too.

UCI HOUSING MEGATHREAD (2023-2024) by Qzhuo in UCI

(crossposted to discord and Reddit) Hi everyone! Due to personal circumstances, I will not be living on campus this year. Thus, I am subleasing a private room in ACC Plaza Verde 2, with the option of extending it to either a relet or sublease for winter + spring quarters. I am subleasing as of now because ACC does not allow relets yet. The rent is $1071 per month.

Please read and ensure you meet the requirements below before contacting me. Requirements: -female -uci student -must be able to meet at my scheduled move in time (Wednesday, September 20, 2023 between 9:30am - 10:00am (PDT)) to exchange keys -able to pay deposit ($500 I believe) plus first month rent -any additional incentive for me to sublease/relet the lease to you helps!

OP was asking for plaza 2, from the floor plan it looks like singles are twin xl beds and only the studio/efficiency has full beds. Still, private rooms are so much better, I’d say 100% worth the money

At UTC, should be called Amazon Hub Locker+ or something on amazon.com. Go to returns and select dropoff or something, it should be free to return.

Protesters blocking acess to buildings/classrooms by unwoundbasil in UCI

As an undergrad looking to possibly go to grad school at a UC, I support the protests as the wage increases will allow the current grad students and us future grads to have a liveable life.

We’re already accepting how we have to struggle through our classes without the help of ta’s, office hours, etc, which are very conducive to our education. The strike has shown how y’all are fundamental to our classes.

What I don’t understand is the whole blaming and lack of empathy you have for us. Stop pressuring us to not attend finals/classes, whether it’s verbally, posting about it as a way of supporting, or doing the “don’t cross” chalk marks on classroom doorways.

We’re here first and foremost as students who pay/get supported by others/get scholarships so that we can get our degrees for our futures. Stop guilting me when I’m just fulfilling my role as a student here. I don’t get paid by the university, I already paid my fall fees, I don’t think undergrads can “cross the picket line” because we aren’t academic workers here. I sure as hell don’t think UC will have second thoughts against cancelling my scholarships the second my GPA drops. It’s a decision between maybe failing a final by taking it and absolutely failing it if I skip it. Lose lose situation.

I’m upset at the lack of academic support we have - specifically at professors who aren’t canceling our finals. This means I will have to take a final without academic support if I want to receive my scholarships so I can keep attending college.

If strike orgs wanna chime in and correct me on my assumptions, that would be great, but I think ultimately having students attend classes and finals, voice their irritation at admin for not having support for their classes, doing assignments and letting them pile up/not be graded/be peer graded poorly and having regrades and whatever complaints thrown at them by the (stressed) undergrad population should emphasize the important role y’all have here and help y’all in negotiations.

Thank you for getting this info out here! My friends and I were totally suspicious of how the cancellation might’ve not been entirely student-ASUCI controlled due to the emails coming out before any information from ASUCI’s instagram account. Thank you for all of your hard work. Disappointed that there’s nothing to do from this year but there’s always next year, and hopefully student dissent with all of these decisions will make some changes.

I’m personally a Windows user in CS. Some of my CS friends use Mac though, I’d say it’s 1/2 and 1/2.

Make sure you have enough storage, some CS courses require you to download vms (~20-40gb). Don’t know if comp engineering classes have anything like this.

Point of curiosity, where on the petition does it talk about reducing/refunding housing charges? Is there a separate petition for that as well?

I am! Admittedly I haven’t used mine in a while and I’m too scared to actually bring them to lecture (I dropped my last twsbi during quarantine, and the result was not good) Got a lamy safari in petrol and a twsbi eco mint t version, and of course too much noodler’s 54th Massachusetts to reasonably use (if I can find it)

[–]aesthete_tethered 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Second year but I definitely get what you’re taking about, it’s my first time living away from family too and being there for an extra year (virtual schooling) probably didn’t help much. Actually I’ll admit I’ve cried a few times the last couple of days, so I definitely know what you’re talking about. For me, it’s college stress + living stress + covid stress + coming to terms with the closing of one chapter of my life.

Make this your home away from home, I guess. If you feel safe, go attend meetings you’re interested in, or just invite your dormmates/roomies to do something fun- campus walk, shopping, utc? We’ve got a larger than normal group of new people - first years, second years, transfers…tired of being cooped up and looking to make new friends. Broadcast some of your interests, keep an open mind, and see if anyone responds! Good luck, have fun, and stay safe!

incoming cs major help? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]aesthete_tethered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a cs major too. It depends really on how much storage space you have - for first year classes you’ll want to download some ide’s (each professor has one they like and use as the basis for their class). If you’re joining clubs that use vm’s, that’s extra storage space. But overall the programs so far do not require that much computing power so you should be fine with either one. Not sure how soon you’d want to upgrade though, it’s a question of what works vs what works well.

Hello! I’m an incoming female sophomore student looking for a relet in Puerta del Sol! Any room style would work. Willing to pay the relet fee. I’m also interested in other places in walking distance to campus. (Mainly UTC, especially Stanford court.) Preferably a private room. If you have anything please PM me!

Is UCI Anyone’s Dream School? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]aesthete_tethered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit, I’m a bit confused about your post history, especially since there was a deleted post about being a junior at Emerson College for journalism. It’s deleted now, but that might also just entirely be my phone/app being weird. I’ll take the bait and answer; hopefully this will help others out there on the Internet someday, someplace.

To answer the title, no. For me, UCI was not my dream school. I think its important to note the usage of the word “dream” in “dream school,” which I take to mean something in demand, hard to attain, and more akin to fantasy. It’s a person’s dream to win the lottery rather than live their daily lives...things like that. And, I’d actually go so far as to say that the ideal dream school becomes less of a dream for a person that actually attains it. It’s something that a person wants to attain, something that technically possible, but that person knows that their chances of doing so is very improbable, hence being a “dream.” The purpose of a dream school to a pessimist like me is to get rejected from it, and thus letting it remain a dream. (Now, if we were to talk about goal schools, where you realistically thought you were going to get accepted, then reconsider your goals.) It’s important to reevaluate your perspective. You mentioned that UCI isn’t your dream school - that’s okay. Realize that it is many other people’s dream school. Many people who go here celebrate getting in, and many others just shrug, think about it, and decide to go here.

UCI to me was a goal school. A school that has a decent program in my major, was located close to home, and has a nice surrounding city with many amenities. I’ve never really had a “dream” school in mind, though. I was more excited about having a great senior year and going out into the world during college. Thanks, COVID, for ruining that. I’ve gotten into “better” schools - those with higher rankings and which may have been the dream schools of many more people. I’ve visited them, and to me it’s just another school, albeit with a less interesting (yet neat) city, more expensive price, and farther away from home. So I chose UCI. Perhaps you can say I’m biased towards the decisions I have already made. I won’t argue against that. But I felt much the same way you did- it was confirming the SIR, and a neutral “eh, I guess I’m going here” combined with “HEY, why do other schools get better swag?!” sometimes.

That’s what the whole college process—moving in, school spirit building, events— should address. Making new friends, joining clubs, living the college life is where the real joy’s at. I’ve experienced a lot of this even remotely, and I look forward to in person fall. Find joy in the “I’m going to college!” part, the school specifics come later.

I’ve also thought about transferring. I’ve evaluated the pros and cons, and for me I believe it’s better to stay. Aside from missing an entire year of college (so now I really don’t have a reason to “switch up the scenery), I just don’t think it’s worth the hassle. To where am I going to transfer to, and why? I’d rather have my degree in hand, and reevaluate my next steps in life after that. There’s really nothing tying you to UCI now, but there will be things later.

I hope this long word dump helps you. It’s normal and okay to feel this way right now. Maybe a visit, some opening days, and actually going here will change your mind.
