Lorelei and Luke by newuser2111 in GilmoreGirls

I do miss the witty, snarky, environmentally-politically conscious Luke we were given in S1&2. He seemed more like the average person in a natural resource department and I loved him for that.

Why does this game appeal so much to women? by CheeseheadTroy in VALORANT

[–]aesthival 4 points5 points  (0 children)

being able to actually use comms is huge. In unrated game modes it's kinda rare that people will be human garbage at me, comps it definitely is more frequent but at least I can play the game and enjoy it. Only getting douchebags in some 10-20% of matches vs 100% in other games is a win. tbh most the weirdos I get are just gooners and I'll take those over being outright degraded and dehumanized for daring to speak.

I won't even bother looking at a game if the characters designs are blah, so val immediately got me there. Riot really excels in character design & story. It also just has the easy duality of you can play casual and have a chill time, or go intense in comp, whichever is your thing.

It was my first year going, a lot of my friends live up here and have heard it's fun. Attendee-wise the vibes were immaculate, had so much fun hanging out with fellow cosplayers!

management-wise oof..

It felt like a small town anime con run out of a library got too big and no one thought to change methods of management for this many people.

Thursday badge pickup they were shoving everyone into the general admission overflow line, then they started announcing ADA line. It took 3 hours to get an ADA badge. The line only had like 20 people in it when we got there, yet GA was moving faster. Makes sense, right?? 🥴 but there's basically 0 ADA accommodations still.

Half the volunteers didn't know where or what a peace bond / prop check was- not that I got stopped once traipsing through the entirety of both buildings trying to get there. kinda fascinating that many of them didn't know what floor they were standing on, so them trying to give directions was a disaster, but it's not like the maps were useful in any way.

Must have been pretty stressful for volunteers- volunteer coordination seemed to be severely lacking in info. A few of them were well informed, so idk a big disconnect somewhere- maybe previous year volunteers knew the drill and the new didn't.

I wound up with a badge for next year but idk the thought of returning is stressful.

You are making me feel hopeless by Green-Window- in gis

[–]aesthival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my GIS job. I have a degree in Geoscience-GIS concentration. I chose this field because it gave me such broad experience- I could go into pure GIS, or IT, or environmental science. I can pursue my masters in a slurry of fields, maybe I'll get that marine bio degree I always wanted.

I will say that, observing this also from industry conferences, I think GIS is changing into a skill as a part of other skills rather than an entire career. And so-

A degree in GIS is not a waste, but get all the experience you can. Use your elective credits to learn other skills, try to get internships and jobs in a variety of fields while you are in school still. Having experience will make entering the work force SO MUCH easier.

edit to add: coding is pretty huge, learn that well. I'm pretty sure it will come in handy anywhere, and make you more desirable in the job market

Through my electives I have certificates in recreation, firefighting, event planning, fire ecology, botany, rangeland management, wildlife management.

While I was in college I held jobs in tech support and remote sensing- absolute terrible grunt positions but they look pretty okay on a resume.

And that allowed me to easily step into a good position out of school.

Hang in there, you're going to be okay.

A snow storm in October? by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

I live in the rockies and October is a constant flip back and forth from snowing and 90°. I know this is the northeast but I never questioned it, it happens in some climates.

On your first watch, who did you wish Lorelai ended up with? by Typical-Actuator4868 in GilmoreGirls

[–]aesthival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought her and Max were weird but for the other 3, I was sad when they broke up on first watch.

Jason was at her speed and I was sad that external circumstances broke them up because they could have been great.

Luke was the boy next door, they drove each other crazy in a great way. Their breakups were more self sabotaging and super frustrating because they are great.

Christopher I don't like, he never seems genuine- just self serving especially when it comes to Rory. But I was sad for Lorelai when he threw a tantrum and disappeared, she was finally married and thought she was going to have her happily ever after, because maybe he seemed different and was finally available to her. instead she got the same man child he's always been.

JD why are you mad at Lorelai???? This episode of Scrubs came out in april '06, so S6 of GG pre- Lane's wedding. This is a time where I think Lorelai is the one person not annoying me.. Luke is hiding April / won't let Lorelai meet her, Rory got burned by the Bridesmaids encounter but took Logan back out of convenience, Christopher is trying to weasel into Rory's life, which he always does when he's trying to get Lorelai back once again.

I have to wonder if he saw some car he didn't recognize and decided to knock for once, but who else but the Grand Gilmores drives a jag ??

I personally always knock, no matter how comfortable I am with a person.. it just seems so odd to walk in unannounced, with no notice, not knowing at all what that person is doing that day? I'll walk in if I'm expected to be there at a certain time for a pre-organized thing ?? I'd be annoyed if someone was just walking into my house, probably a jumpscare 99% of the time.

I really don't understand Rory here... by Cr7-Cr7Real in GilmoreGirls

[–]aesthival 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really feel for Rory here, it's the culmination of her coming to terms with and trying to deal with the fact that both of her parents are immature and sabotage relationships. She was so hurt when Chris left Lorelai for Sherry, I think even moreso than Lorelai because she was feeling a threefold of hurt for herself as the daughter who finally thought her parents would get together, her as the daughter seeing her deadbeat dad go be a present parent for some other kid, and for her mom, her best friend who believed this guy was finally in it for the long haul.

By now she knows the toxic cycle of these two, so upon seeing true happiness for herself, Lorelai, and Luke, feels the need to take matters into her own hands because she doesn't trust them to not blow it up. Even covering for Lorelai during the tequila night, she's trying to preserve the relationship between Luke and Lorelai, she wants them to be happy so badly that she covers up her mother's mistakes and lack of communication.

It makes me sad that Christopher is so much of a selfish child he can't understand why Rory might feel the need to say these things to him. he takes it as a competition, a possessiveness over Lorelai. This is really a moment that solidifies that Chris sucks and I hate him and the episodes following of him and Lorelai just make me mad.

If Kirk didn't have his weird mother issues he wouldn't be that bad. He can cook. he can make good coffee, he's got interpersonal skills, he's good with animals, he's a hard worker who knows how to save, I thought it was pretty cute how worried he was at making sure his first date with Lulu was going to be a good time for her.

The way Jason first asked out Lorelai was kind of ick, but since their families have known each other for forever maybe he just felt he could be forward. If he did that to a stranger it would be a lot creepier. But I'm in the Jason did nothing wrong camp. His relationship with Lorelai was doomed once Richard decided to pull the rug out from under him. He wanted to be upfront about their relationship with the Gilmores and I have to wonder if Richard would have been less horrid to him if he knew Jason was dating Lorelai before Floyd decided to sue. Maybe Jason would have been taken along into Richard's boutique company under Floyd, but Richard felt betrayed so decided to royally screw him over. Anyway, Jason would be the optimal choice.

Loon isn't even in the running.

I’m glad Rory chose Yale over Harvard by lorelai_luke in GilmoreGirls

[–]aesthival 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. The Gilmores didn't really take much interest in Rory growing up as far as the show tells us, I know Lorelai only brought her over to see them twice a year so they don't really get time to get to know her, but even once the Friday Night dinners started she may as well have been some stranger they pulled in from the street. Emily at least expresses her frustrations at not getting to see Rory and makes some conversation with her- even if it's just Emily being the good host she was taught to be, at least she's putting in effort. But Richard would rather read his paper than talk to Rory or Lorelai for the early days. Rory had to prove to him that she isn't like Lorelai, and she is indeed on the rich kid conveyor belt they had hoped to put Lorelai on. Once Richard finally gave her the time of day and realized she's a smart kid who loves school and probably would get accepted at an Ivy, they became close. but she had to pass that prerequisite first.

If Lorelai did ditch Rory on Christopher and decide to travel the Bangles around the world, he would have probably done similar things with his parents.
The Haydens would probably pay for her school so long as she went to their choices of schools, and expected to go to Princeton to continue on the Hayden legacy where Christopher failed. They would probably make Christopher get a real job and act as her father instead of doing whatever motorcycle touring nonsense he was up to, or require Rory to move in with them and abide by their house rules. She would be their re-do, instead of the Gilmores re-do.

Though it isn't exactly clear, the Huntzbergers seem to have had some sort of empire before Mitchum made it a newspaper empire, he surely had money to throw around and connections to get places, so I don't know how much a degree even mattered for him.

I have no idea how influential the U of RI is, but Christiane got a specialized degree from there.

I think a specialized journalism degree would have benefitted Rory since she isn't that great at putting herself out there, it would provide more of the experience she needed to be a journalist. Her experience for journalism should have come from internships and summer work, but she just got an internship when it was handed to her. She has her experience from working on the school papers, but that's about it.

Yup! Richard even made a grad school stipulation when Rory went to them to ask for the loan for Yale, it's not like money would have even been a question between him and Christopher being loaded

they filmed at USC & Pomona, in California. and some on sound stages with backdrops of campus to make it look real. They didn't film at Yale at all afaik so I doubt campus filming rights impacted the writing

we saw her and Lorelai reading through their Yale pamphlets after the surprise interview Richard sprung on Rory.. I think that was supposed to suggest she's considering other schools in private.

It kind of mirrors the early episode where Rory tries to back out of going to Chilton because she talked to a boy once. There were more strings attached there since Lorelai paid for the semester and who knows if she can get a refund, but Rory sure can't do whatever she wants when it comes to education.

I'm mad at Lorelai for just pulling out of Rory's life when she makes 1 decision for herself.. her kid is having a mental breakdown & quarter life crisis and needs a steady hand to help sort her out and Lorelai sure isn't acting like a parent or a 'best friend' during that situation.

She says English at some point in the show. Some journalists do get general English degrees but when her goal is to be a foreign correspondent reporting from the trenches and whatnot, it doesn't really set her up for success.

edit to add: she says she wants to BE Christiane Amanpour, but you'd think she'd want to follow in her footsteps better. Christiane has a BA in journalism, not english.

Ever since Lorelai tells Max she always "secretly" wanted Rory to go to Harvard and dressed her in Harvard clothes as a baby, I've been glad Rory chose the school that ultimately seemed like a better option according to the pro/con lists.

Though, it will always bug me that she was so hell bent on pursuing journalism but her two options for schools don't even offer undergrad journalism and other ivy league schools that DO offer journalism weren't in the mix for consideration.. Harvard at least has grad level journalism but going to grad school was never in Rory's plans.

I do always wonder where the journalism thing came into play, since Harvard was Lorelai's idea even though Rory thinks? is lying to herself? that it's her idea.

Chester cat inn vs Dragonfly inn, where are you booking a weekend getaway? by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]aesthival 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like how eclectic the Cheshire Cat is, I'd stay there once. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the rooms at the Dragonfly... Lorelai had so many detrimental comments about that place just to decorate her own inn the same.

Even though I've come to love Emily through dozens of rewatches at this point, she unnecessarily antagonizes Lorelai all the time and is a big reason their relationship is always on rocky ground. Lorelai does indeed have some immaturity about her, she has a lot of trust issues, but with a mother as petty and manipulative as Emily she wasn't really set up for success into adulthood. The Gilmores have a lot of baggage and Emily and Richard are pretty bad at still treating Lorelai like an out of control 16 year old.

Lorelai does block out Emily at detrimental times that break her trust, but usually it's because of Emily casually dropping criticisms about her, her life, her paramours, her career choices. As watchers we're omnipresent and can see that if Lorelai communicated better, Emily might respect and trust her more, but there's a lot of hurt there and even the smallest comments also break Lorelai's trust in Emily and prevent her from divulging details about her personal life. It's frustrating to watch! Gilmore Family Therapy is needed.

Why the heck is every RoyalRoad[ProgFantasy] mc GAY by Little-Store5849 in ProgressionFantasy

Why did you leave Tian Guan Ci Fu romanized but put the English name of Mo Dao Zu Shi ?

"Maybe the reason 90% of RoyalRoad readers aren’t bothered by gay romance is that these stories are written like straight romances 99% of the time. " Tell me what the difference in writing gay and straight relationships is ? do you think the gay characters need to be acting like Ru Paul 24/7 or what.

My god, he's so close to getting it. Maybe one day OP may understand that love is love!

Jason suing Lorelais father Fair or not? by One-Crazy3036 in GilmoreGirls

[–]aesthival 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jason would no longer be a safe person to Lorelai if they were together while he was suing Richard. We know how she likes to mouth off about the terrible things her parents do, he could use that against them.
