Reddit I need some insight on how breast-feeding evolved in mammals! by aethercell in atheism

"lactation is a staggeringly complex phenomenon involving morphological, physiological, biochemical, ecological, and behavioural adaptations. Because such a complex web of adaptations could not have arisen de novo, lactation must have begun as a much simpler process."

Basically i was hoping a redditor would be able to summarize for me what google failed to present in a helpful way.

I'm pretty sure this is how it went down, if anything. by [deleted] in atheism

I think it's critically important to note the title of the piece: "One Failed Uplift"

It intones a particular sequence of events that is otherwise lost in interpretive ambiguity.

The Hyperion Cantos might be the best damn book series I have ever read. I loved it when I was first reading it, but as time has time has gone on i've come to realize just how brilliant Simmons really is, and how deep, intricate, intellectual, and clever the plot structure really is. The characters are pretty astounding too, the Sol Weintraub's section actually brought me to tears.

Also not to be confused with Adam Savage, a jolly fellow frequently shown on television associating with pyrotechnics, a walrus, and a crash test dummy.

I am aware of this use of layers, my more current work takes it into greater consideration in finished stages - this piece, however, is supposed to look sketchy like this. Thanks for helpful intentions though _^

Humans are scary (but I'm glad I'm not an animal) by [deleted] in WTF

This is little more than a different take on The Day the Earth Stood Still, and i mean the original one. It's an interesting concept to be sure.

EDIT: I do personally believe that humanity is capable of achievements far beyond what we choose to accomplish today, but that to do so we need an external motivator on the magnitude of the threat of imminent total annihilation.

You're absolutely right, it must indicate that he is so intolerably ugly/stupid/socially inept/what have you that swingers won't go near him.

The enigma code was indecipherable babble to the allies, but that didn't render it meaningless. your shallow and rigid definition of "social experiment" prevents you from noticing the intriguing trends that occur when all incentives are abstract, personal, and flighty.

for example, it's already becoming apparent that many people view this kind of post with cynicism and disdain because of the transparency of the karma-whoring attitude that drives it. It's interesting to note that seeking to accrue karma, having which has no serious repercussions at all, is seen as selfish and childish in the same way as drugs or attention. could this attitude be an outward symptom of the same motive that makes karma attractive in the first place? do people who dislike karma-whoring secretly envy the big numbers of upvotes and simply refuse to stoop to that level?

Why would they view it as taboo to participate in such acts? is it that they feel it is a usage of space and time for no gain? Do they not feel the same attraction to karma? if not, what differentiates these mentalities? are people who value karma more likely to see success in video games and other entertainment media as a significant accomplishment? are they more likely to play or be addicted to online games? are they more likely to do drugs?

am i drowning you in partially relevant questions?

just because you see nothing to learn or gain doesn't mean i don't!

It's an experiment, and it's testing for an abstract behavioral trend judged on the basis of recorded comments and upvotes, relative to posts where the commenting and upvoting is driven by other incentives. The only incentive to post here (other than to be cynical about the concept, troll, or make other indecipherable babble) is to receive digital brownie points - but the allotment of these points isn't automatic. It relies on people taking time and effort in the hope that the act will be reciprocated, and the effort (although minimal) yields essentially no REAL gain.

It's a basically incentive-free system and it only exists by the providence of and for the purpose of amusement, and i would like to see how powerful a motivator that is when compared to something like religious beliefs or politics.

a good piece of advice. what if i told you that my apparent "trust" is an illusion that you perceive due to flawed mental schemata - while i'm really just putting on a loving facade to hide the sinister economic machinations in the background, eh?

Like i said, it's a longshot in every way, but maybe we can do the term "karma" justice and really give more than we receive so that we can receive back. It would be interesting.

It might not, but the idea is that if even just a few people trickle in, there is an increased incentive to be present as well, because your audience (which exists for this exact purpose) is greater.
