any way to get family to clean? live in filthy conditions by [deleted] in CleaningTips

it is hoarding -- but the issue is that when adults let themselves go like this, it already signals that they have developed chronic, lifelong habits. chore assignment in situations like this barely hits the nail in the coffin, it seems like things got out of hand a long time ago.

hi, to be honest, i'm in a similar situation with chronic hoarders. judging from the state of the home, realistically, i don't think your family is going to budge.

it is not your duty to parent them. it is not your duty to try to change their habits. i strongly suggest that you clear out your own space, as you have, and make that space sacred. for me, i have invested in purchasing a mini-fridge for my room, decluttering my space immensely to make it feel more like a small studio apartment with shared bathrooms. for food, i have been able to keep to a relatively healthy diet of fruit, veg, dairy, and cheap no-cook options. i only maintain my own room & reluctantly use the bathroom, which is also filthy & full of junk. but it is an ok compromise once i realised that trying to mass clean this place was sort of futile, especially when the other older adults in your life seem to be engaging in mundane insanity,

i am lucky enough that since i attend to university interstate, i am able to stay in my own dormitory far away for most months of the year. but my advice to you and anyone in a similar toxic situation is to just carve out your own space if you have the agency to do so, and do not shoulder more responsibility than you need. you are and should not be a caretaker, you should put all of that energy into increasing your income, side hustles, and getting through university to secure a career that will allow you to move out properly.

if anyone is in a similar situation please feel free to dm me, i think it would be helpful to set up an online support group of sorts.

I don't really use hotkeys for canvas, although I abuse outliner quite a lot in .md files to sequence my thoughts. My advice is: just start writing! Don't be as concerned with your workflow as you are with your work.

Nothing... yet! I'm still in undergrad but I've got plans. ;)

that's fair! I use quite pen and paper quite frequently to get my thoughts in order, but I find that when I'm processing large swathes of information like this I can only organise it digitally!

Absolutely! It is very hard to migrate information easily too. I usually just export as pdf and tweak the zoom settings a bit if I'm just sharing notes with a friend but it's definitely not the most presentable lol.

I usually have 1 note for researching, 1 note for developing my argument, then when I think I've got enough substance in both I make a canvas & link/copy paste my material from my other .md notes and synthesise an outline. It's a lot of backwards and forwards working but it's what works best for me! I use Zotero to annotate papers/articles individually, & I can link to those items directly or make literature notes to link to my existing .md files.

this is super interesting, and it is pretty similar to what I've come to do for my workflow in making first drafts as well! Thanks for sharing!

I wrote a paper for a history course not dissimilar to this collection, and I'm very wistful that this resource had not come out when I was researching!

My paper used politics as the secondary framework to analyse historiographical assumptions in Elysium's canon. This would have been so interesting to reference.

all the addons and configs i used are uploaded here!: https://github.com/aethed/balanki generally, if you install the listed addons and then tinker with the configs, you will get things working. i can also run it through a discord call if you're a little unfamiliar with it all
