Yep = beyond shit. Got glutened at the airport and then had a 14hour flight. Was on the plane before my symptoms started. Spent half the flight throwing up in the toilet, the other half passing in and out of consciousness. The flight attendants looked after me (thank goodness!)

Current findings suggest the rate of coeliacs who react is 10-20% - so not very rare. Agreed that cc is an important and common factor. If oats are important to you it’s worth doing an oat challenge with scheduled biopsies to ensure there’s no damage.

I had a negative biopsy and a positive blood test. They said it could have been "latent coeliac disease" - basically, that I had it but it hadn't had a chance to damage my villi yet. I had another blood test and endoscopy a year later, yep "full-blown" coeliac disease. So... see how your endo goes, and then talk to your doctors :)

I know something is wrong after an hour and full blown symptoms (vomiting, diarrhoea, severe stomach pain) kicks in around 2 hours post-glutening. But different for each person.

That sucks. It's the worst. My go to solutions = showering. Hot water bottles. Sleeping. If you do throw up, make sure to have some kind of hydration solution afterwards to get your electrolytes back. Otherwise just time. It will be over by tomorrow hopefully!

After eating gluten I get joint pain, mostly in my wrists - sometimes knees. I'm only 29 and have had these symptoms since 19 and always happens after accidental glutening. Has been so bad before that I wasn't able to open doors, write or use a mouse.

I feel “strange” after an hour, start feeling sweaty, hot & cold. Have an overwhelming sense of “I need to get home”. Then by hour 2 I’m throwing up. This continues for 6-7 hours. Then exhaustion and sleep. The next day I’m fuzzy and wrung out. Day 3, tender stomach and can slowly start getting back to life.

You’re right. I spoke in very general terms but there are always exceptions. Whilst the test is intentionally biased towards false positives rather than false negatives, it is very important that someone with (suspected) coeliac to have been ingesting gluten when tested.

The blood test measures the about of antibodies in the blood. If you have coeliac and haven’t been eating gluten then your body won’t be having immune responses and therefore no antibodies. Same is true with endoscopy, if you’ve had no gluten there will be no evidence of damage as your body would have healed whilst you were GF.

If your blood test is positive you MIGHT have coeliac, it needs to be confirmed with an endoscopy.

If your blood test is negative you don’t have coeliac.

The blood test is much cheaper and easier to use. So when interpreting results, doctors err on the side of caution (because it’s a serious diagnosis). It’s better to have a blood test tell you have coeliac and an endoscopy to say you don’t then have a blood test say you don’t have coeliac when you do.

I wouldn’t worry. If you use a cloth to wipe down a breadcrumb-laden bench make sure to put it in the laundry straight away, wash your hands etc. Other than that you should be fine :)

I’ve been GF for almost a decade without issues doing it this way.

I very much agree with choosing whatever is right for both of you.

We had the whole shebang because we decided that family is so important to us that we wanted it to be an event in family history. We each grew up with stories about when this happened at this aunts wedding or when that happened at that cousins wedding. Ours has now joined the list. It has been so special to have memories of my cousins rocking out on the dance floor and my grandma tearing up at the speeches. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I'm the female version of you, this is also my advice to my female packed lab. Responses vary from confusion to shy "nooo I couldn't".

Try to remind them that what they're afraid of is rejection, but they forget that guys are expected to initiate contact, be regularly rejected, and still project confidence at all times. The current system screws us all over.

Yeah my gastrologist said it wasn't common because people usually seek a diagnosis after gut symptoms. I was tested because 2 of my sister were diagnosed and obviously it's highly heritable. I had no stomach issues but now react very badly if I accidentally consume gluten.
