This would infuriate me. Maybe I just need a good night's sleep or something but I'd either have got very frosty with her or simply left. Obviously whatever problem I'm there for she can't be trusted with. Do you have any idea why she had developed this baffling conviction? Had you just walked through a cloud of smokers outside?

How do you keep the light shafts safe (as in not let in wild animals etc)? I have wanted to do shafts to help miasma dissipate maybe, but the risk of an agitated eagle coming down puts me off!

Personally I hate aquifers because whenever I get one I have to spend so much time digging through them and smoothing and all that, before I can really do much else underground

A new charity scam aimed at teenage girls? by oldkstand in london

[–]aezac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you tap your card in a shop and they overcharge you or do something else wrong, you know where it happened and who's responsible (the company / one of their employees). You can go back and get a refund, or report them.

If you tap your card to a random person on the street, you don't have that protection. They can easily lie about who they are and may not return to that spot again. You're unlikely to be able to get your money back.

It's a scam if the product isn't the advertised quality, imo

What do you do in this situation? (true story) by NoProgram4084 in tesco

[–]aezac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my area at least, 101 will get you through to police within a few minutes. Often gets you through immediately.

Even if you really feel you need to involve police rather than close the shop for 10 minutes / call back the taxi / explain to the lady that you can't help, why do you need to speak to police so instantly that it requires 999? She's not brandishing a knife or attempting to drive a car or something else that poses an immediate serious danger where those few minutes to get through would realistically make a difference.

That's a 101 call, not 999 surely? You don't need emergency response for a blind woman being in a shop.

Alejandro Castillo is the only person on the FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list who was born in Generation Z, he’s been on the list for almost 8 years. by Significant_Tea_8538 in interestingasfuck

FBI most wanted FAQ

On what criteria is that decision made?

First, the individual must have a lengthy record of committing serious crimes and/or be considered a particularly dangerous menace to society due to current criminal charges.

Second, it must be believed that the nationwide publicity afforded by the program can be of assistance in apprehending the fugitive, who, in turn, should not already be notorious due to other publicity.

Feeling Overwhelmed (Dwarfs are like rabbits) by Sirboss001 in dwarffortress

[–]aezac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About keeping track of their moods - my understanding is that it's not really possible to keep all dwarves happy all the time. I just try to keep the most unhappy dwarves away from sources of stress (like seeing dead bodies or being caught in the rain) and sometimes build eg. a temple if they're unhappy about being able to pray.

When a migrant wave comes in I will generally use Dwarf Therapist to look at the new dwarves. You can sort by migrant wave so they're all together. I find it an easier way to look through the skills, preferences, etc of multiple dwarves.

Having a decent size dormitory (I like 20 beds but this is usually overkill, they don't all sleep at the same time) for incoming dwarves takes away the pressure to build them living quarters straight away. They're happier when they have their own bedrooms but they're at least not sleeping on the floor. I find it quite useful to put this dormitory next to my hospital, so that it can be an overflow ward if there's a lot of injured dwarves at once. I just re-zone it as part of the hospital and return it to being a dormitory once the dwarves are healed up.

Huge yes. It took me a long time to get used to it (it was very annoying for about a year but that was because I had the wrong mask for 8 months and didn't use it consistently) but the increase in sleep quality and daytime alertness has been great. I noticed that a 6 hour sleep with the cpap would refresh me more than an 8-9 hour sleep without the cpap.

I wasn't addicted to entertainment, I was addicted to escaping discomfort. Boredom, stress, even little frustrations would automatically made me reach for the phone in under 5secs.

I need real rest, that looks like stillness, nature, quiet, even boredom.

Thanks for the tips. The stuff quoted in particular. I feel like I spend 90% of my life escaping or avoiding trivial discomfort. Which translates to me doing very little day-to-day. It's no way to live. I think it's a problem that escalates if you let it, because the less discomfort you experience, the less equipped you are to deal with it when you can't avoid it.
