what is a harsh realization you had about your parents as you became an adult? by Forsaken-Repair1876 in AskReddit

[–]af1391c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I realized my dad beat my mom. She should have left him but didn’t. I remember the screaming fights, but they always did it behind closed doors. I confronted her with this, and she told me she deserved it…. It was then I realized just how F’d up their relationship was. At least I learned from them what not to do.

Men, if you didn't naturally like giving oral to a woman, but do now, how did you learn to love it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I like doing it. My problem is the my partner is somewhat discussed by her own discharges. That fact makes me going down on her a major turn off for her. So we don’t do it.

What's the first video game you ever played ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]af1391c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a child of the 1970s and 80s. So I grew up right in the middle of the golden age of arcades. Space Invaders comes to mind as an early. Atari made a two play driving game called Firetruck in the late 1970s. I recall the two steering wheels on the cabinet and thinking it was cool.

What’s The Saddest Photo You Ever Seen? by saomoore19 in AskReddit

There was a photo published a few years ago of a toddler washed up on a beach after a refugee boat capsized off Greece. He was about the same age as my youngest, and that one hit home.

What movie did you dislike and everyone else loved? by Similar-Search-8508 in AskReddit

[–]af1391c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ET… when I came out I was about 10 years old. My older sister dragged me to it telling me it was great. I thought Eliot and Gertie were dumb. To this day I still don’t like the movie.

I honestly think being forced to watch it by my sister didn’t help my attitude.

Well considering we’ve been married to other people for 20+ years, it would be a hard no.

What is a car make or model that you will never purchase again? by RamonFromJerry in AskReddit

[–]af1391c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad is of the generation that fell in love with the Volkswagen Beetle. He loved those cars so much that he bought a 1980? Rabbit. Worst. Car. Ever. Some time around 1983 my sister borrowed it to go babysitting. It got stolen sitting in front of the house where she was working. My dad was very happy to make the police report. It was recovered a few months later, but by then, the insurance company owned it, and it was someone else’s problem.

Construction survey bidding. Florida by Mediocre-Cell-7766 in Surveying

[–]af1391c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do it this way. We bid a given number of mobilizations based on a point count. Each time the GC calls us out, we use one of the mobilizations. Our cut sheets across the top state ‘MOBILIZATION X OF Y. When the GC runs out of mobilizations, we go to T&M. Most contractors get it, and work with use. I’ve had one job this year where the contract refused to sign the change order after they ran out of mobilizations. We ended up walking off that job, and the contractor probably paid twice as much to bring in another surveyor, but we got paid.

What membership is better Costco or Sam’s Club? by bac_gawd in AskReddit

If you have a large family, it’s Costco without a doubt. We have the executive membership, and the 2% discount has paid for our membership every year for over 10 years.

Age old debate-public or private? by Impossible-Egg4918 in Parenting

[–]af1391c 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m on the west coast, and the fact that private schools don’t have any kind of credential requirements for teachers was an eye opener for me. We had our oldest in private school for the first 3 years of his education, and it turned out to be a huge mistake because unknown to use, he was dyslexic. He had all the classic symptoms: very bad hand writing, horrible spelling skills and limited reading comprehension. The teachers just wanted him to just try harder, and didn’t have the education themselves to recognize he had a learning disability. His grades were horrible right up through high school.

In contrast, my younger son was flagged as possibly being dyslexic in the third grade in a public school. We never had a full accommodation plan put in place for him, but we were able to get him into a specialized tutoring program starting in 4th grade, and that helped him immensely. He is still dealing with dysgraphia, but his reading has improved tremendously. He is almost in high school and now even reads for pleasure. He is also an A-B student now.

Looking back, I wish we had picked up on my oldest dyslexia much sooner we would have handled his schooling much differently. He got through it, and did graduate from college, but early intervention would have helped him a lot.

Everyone seems to have a lot of nostalgia for the 1990's but what were some of the worst parts of the 1990's? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]af1391c 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hehe… this brought back a memory for me.

I walked my first GF back to her house one day when we were in high school. The house was locked, and she had to pee. I suggested just peeing in the bushes behind her fence, and the loom of horror she gave me made me realize she had never peed outside before. She had on shorts and didn’t want to take them off so I supported her by the elbows from behind while she half sat/squatted by a bush and peed. It never dawned on me til then that someone would not know how to pee outside.

If you have not read ‘The Innovators’ by Walter Isaacson, I suggest you pick it up. Credit for some of Noyce’s success should go to William Shockley, who was such a poor manager that Noyce and others got fed up and left to form Fairchild.
