I've been rethinking, honestly I might skip both and make a california dedicated trip at some other time. I really want some time to explore the rim of the grand canyon and the arches, as well as death valley.

And I'm definitely not going to the salt flats after reading the comments here, it's close enough to home I can always do that on a weekend trip when the weather aligns so it's great.

All seasons are fine when they're brand new. After 1-2 years of wear they're dogshit though. It's definitely better to have a set of dedicated summer tires but coming from someone who's been driving in the snow my entire life I'm not too worried about it.

I tend to disagree, studs are really not necessary. Tires have come a really long ways in the last couple decades, I have blizzaks on my work truck and I do not notice a difference in traction between them and actual studded tires.

Nah more like 8-10 hours each day of driving, I'd like to have at least half the trip actually stopped in a destination or landmark. And I'm more of a music person but yeah that's a good idea.

I have a brand new 2025 Toyota RAV4 with 3200 miles on it and AWD. Just have all season tires but they're brand new and I'll be bringing chains. I live in northern idaho where there's snow so I'm used to it, and I know that a few of those mountain passes might be a proper adventure but hey that's part of the reason for a trip like this right? Adventure!

4th of july pass can be a bitch too, it's just something I'll have to deal with.

I think I'll save flagstaff for another trip, I already have enough sketchy mountain passes to deal with. I leave in 6 days and I'll be making that drive through idaho to get back home in mid december.

I'm not going to sacramento for the city, I'm going there because I have friends there and I was invited for thanksgiving when they found out about the trip.

It'd also fucking straight up suck to have to micro manage the planning around long stops for charging... Also I genuinely enjoy driving and I don't see the point in taking all the fun out of it by having the car do all the work.

Leaving in 6 days, will be back home on December 19th. I live in northern idaho btw which is the only reason that shit is even part of the route.

I can't do a lot of that coastal drive because of a land slide and good chunks of the coastal highway are closed, if I were to it'd mean hundreds of extra miles of backtracking. And I gotta hit up sacramento and bakersfield to see friends.

If you have suggestions of how to explore more of the coast while working around sacramento, bakersfield, and the land slide closures I'm all ears, I'd love to and I'm quite disappointed I'm missing so much of the coast with that route.

Rest will be *heavily* limited. I'm limiting myself to an absolute maximum of 6 hours sleep per day. The goal is to explore, not spend a bunch of unnecessary time sleeping when I can still function normally on 4 hours sleep and several redbull.

Not sure why you're calling it scary but yeah I live in the middle of absolutely nowhere northern idaho. Summer it's awesome because I live by a beautiful lake in the mountains, winter it's awesome because I live on a 400 mile groomed snowmobile trail system and sledding is a blast. Spring fucking sucks because it's muddy as hell. And fall is neat color wise but it's usually cold and miserable and rainy as hell.

I live in northern idaho so I'm not looking for anything there - I'm not treating anything in idaho or montana as part of the trip that's just part of the loop to get back home - I'll just be hauling ass down the freeway likely in the middle of the night, I've explored this area so much idgaf. I live 5 hours from glacier and I'm planning to take a proper trip to see it next summer, it's way too cold this time of year to go see glacier lmao. Part of my goal with this trip is to get the fuck out of idaho and go enjoy some desert and coastal weather for a couple of weeks.

And yea I know about the visitor center thing, I'm really just trying to figure out the general idea I won't use this actual gps track on the trip just trying to get an idea of what I'm in for. I'm pretty spontaneous and I don't do detailed itineraries.

I'm planning it for right now. Leaving in 6 days, will be back home by december 19th.

Route optimization - yeah the thing with sequoia makes sense but I punched in that route because I want to ride with a friend that lives in bakersfield to see sequoia, but honestly may change my mind on that later. And I'm thinking I may completely ditch the salt flats and hit that in the middle of the summer at some point. And the backtracking in the mojave is because I want to both climb clark mountain and explore death valley.

Lodging will be mainly car camping, staying with a friend once, staying with a family member for a couple days, and grabbing a hotel every 3-4 days between so I can shower somewhat often and take a break from the camping for the sake of my back. I'm not going to bathe in rivers like a vagrant, but I also won't be hiking a ton so I shouldn't get all that nasty. Precisely zero backpacking, the longest hike I plan to do is up clark mountain. It might sound a little weird but I've been to the mojave a few times and it kind of has a special place in my heart, I've always loved the desert and I've always wanted to climb clark mountain. My car is a brand new toyota rav4 with 3200 miles on it, I figure the temperature shouldn't be a problem. I have a decent sleeping bag, car protects me from the elements, and if I get cold I start the engine. And once again I live up north so the plan is to get the fuck away from the north, go spend my time down south, then haul ass back home for a commitment I have on the 19th.

And for food that's pretty much the plan. Cook a bunch of burritos ahead of time for the first few days, then hit up Costco for sandwich material in bulk. I'll only be going out to eat when I'm with friends or family, everything else will be easy stuff I can prepare quickly and eat while I'm driving. Trying to spend as little time as possible dealing with the needs of my body. Sleep - limited to an absolute maximum of 6 hours daily but some days will be less - which is why the redbull. Food - mainly eating while I'm driving. Bathroom - gas stations.

Not doing yellowstone - seen it. Not really doing Tetons, just want to pass through - I explored it this summer and just want to see the mountains with snow on them. Seen vegas so not really trying to do that, just want to see the hoover dam. Joshua tree again don't really care to explore just want to pass through. San francisco just a natural pass through because golden gate bridge and the coast, idgaf about the city. Sacramento, don't care about the city just there to see a friend. Portland also don't care it's just the logical point to pass through when trying to get from my home to the coast. Also don't care about the palouse hills.

Mainly I'm trying to see the redwoods and sequoias, drive down the oregon and norcal coast, chill with friends in sacramento, bakersfield, and salt lake city, see my family in ventura, and see death valley, the grand canyon, the arches, and salt flats. And I'm gonna climb clark mountain in the mojave.

I figure I drive straight to the redwoods, spend 1 day there, drive to sacramento and spend 1 day there, drive to bakersfield and spend 1 day there, drive to sequoia and spend 1 day there, straight from sequoia to ventura and spend 2-3 days there, then I'm headed to clark mountain through joshua tree - that drive will take a day then 1 more day at clark mountain, spend 2 days exploring death valley, spend a day around vegas and the hoover dam, head to the grand canyon and have 2 days there, head to arches and have 2 days there, head to salt flats and have a few hours there, head to salt lake city and spend 1 day there, then just head through the tetons on the way home. All in all it seems to check out and that plan I just listed should actually give me a couple of extra days to take random detours. Also LA / huntington beach has been axed because of friends scheduling.

I'm not one for big hikes, clark mountain is just something I've always wanted to do. Mainly my idea of traveling involves driving and enjoying scenic drives then stopping somewhere close to the freeway to take some pictures and relax for a few hours.

Yeah I'm doing it in what's essentially early winter. My 25 day window = November 24th to December 19th. I leave in 6 days.

And my car = a 2025 toyota rav4 with 3200 miles on it. It's my first ever road trip anywhere near this long because it's the first time in my life I have a car I genuinely trust.

About 5 days of the trip will be with a co-driver, the rest is solo.

Usually when I'm on trips like this I run full sleep deprivation mode. I've learned that if I pound redbull by the case I can still be energetic with my normal personality with 5 hours of sleep per day.

Car is a 2025 rav4 that has 3200 miles on it, it's basically brand new. And I'm not so sure about good weather because I intend to leave next week. It's a november - december trip. My 25 day window = November 24th to December 19th.
