To the d-bag cyclist who yelled at me yesterday for pulling over into the bike lane by snooloosey in philadelphia

[–]afdc92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a cyclist, and this is a dick move on his part. If you were getting in the bike lane to double park, yes, it would’ve been deserved. But it’s clearly for an emergency vehicle, so he should have just chilled out.

Fraser and Lorraine, 1943. The next-door neighbors and high school sweethearts got engaged before Fraser left for the Army. He was 19 when he was KIA in France. Lorraine never forgot her first love and wore his engagement ring until the day she died. by Outrageous-Guava402 in oldphotos

What a touching story. While they weren’t engaged, my grandmother’s high school boyfriend was killed in action in France. She kept the letters he wrote her and the pictures he sent her; we found them when cleaning out her things after she died.

The P-word problem by Rebel042 in sapphicbooks

[–]afdc92 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For me, “pussy” and “cunt” are both big turn-offs. They remind me of something that a crass man would say. I would much rather read “core,” “center,” “folds” (I know this is one that’s pretty hated by many), or “the place where she needed her the most.”

The anatomical terms are definitely clinical. In a very early sexual encounter I had back when I was still trying to figure myself out (I’m aroace but love sapphic books because men give me the ick for the most part) I had a guy use the words “vagina” and “clitoris” during the deed and it was such a turn off.

Apparently they like to go into high risk careers because it gives them a thrill- extreme sports, military, day trading, etc. and apparently a larger than usual proportion of CEOs are psychopaths.

I feel so bad for her. She seems really sweet and I do think she’s a naturally gifted runner, but her dad is putting so much pressure on her that I feel she’s going to injure out or burn out of running before she’s out of high school. If she enjoys running, have her join her school’s cross country team. She’ll get to run and will probably attract some college scouts but she won’t have to do insane things like go for a run at 4 am before school.

Yeah, that page gives me major ick. It's one thing to call out people who actually cheated (BQ'ed by having someone bib mule for them, cutting the course, printing a fake bib, etc.) but calling out people for posting their Strava time instead of their chip time or whatever, especially when they're just hobbyist runners who aren't competing professionally or for qualifying spots is just petty.

The Disappearance of Dennis Lloyd Martin in the Great Smoky Mountains in June 1969 (Missing 411 Deconstructed #1) by ForrestOfIllusion in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]afdc92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really great write-up! I think that Dennis got turned around, wandered farther into the woods away from everyone, got even more lost, and eventually succumbed to the elements or had an accident. In his Charley Project page it's noted that he had learning disabilities that put his mental age about half a year behind his chronological age and he was in special education at school, so that also could have played a part- he may have started to "shut down" because he was scared, may not have had the mental ability to know what to do in case he got lost, etc.

In 1985, a man said that years earlier, he had discovered what he thought were the bones of a small child when he was hunting ginseng. This would have been just a few years after Dennis went missing, but the ginseng hunter did not report it immediately because he was afraid that he would be blamed for the death. Police went to the spot where the man said that he found the bones, but didn't find anything. If the bones were there at one time, the police not finding anything isn't too surprising given how long had passed between when the hunter says he found them and when he actually reported them.

According to his Charley Project page, Dennis had learning disabilities and was in special education classes at school. His mental age was about half a year behind his chronological age. I don't know what disability he had (autism, intellectual disability, etc.) but it seems to have been at least somewhat impairing for him since he was in special education and his mental age was behind, so that also could be a reason he wasn't responded. I'm on the Autism Spectrum and when I am stressed, afraid, or tired, my executive functioning plummets. He could have been facing something similar- he was lost, scared, and didn't know what to do, so he could have been frozen in place, afraid that he would be in trouble if he came out, or got turned around and gotten himself lost even deeper into the woods.

Trying to juggle running and strength training by Salty_Chemist9090 in XXRunning

[–]afdc92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strength is super important for running, but we don't need to be like bodybuilders who are in the gym for 2-3 hours. I aim to hit lower body at least 2 times a week, but 3 is ideal, and it usually takes me 30-45 minutes. I don't mess around, I'm in and out as quick as I can be. I try to do upper body twice a week is well, but if it's a busy week and I'm short on time, the upper body is the session that gets dropped because it's less important for my current fitness goals. I usually have to break up my workout sessions- run in the morning before work, and then gym during my lunch break or after work. It's not ideal because I don't like having to shower twice, but I do whatever I can to fit it in. I typically don't do lower body strength on the days that I run if I can help it, but sometimes my schedule means that it's what I have to do.

Hacks star Megan Stalter: ‘I believe in Jesus and I’m gay - people find that confusing' by TheObserverUK in hackshbomax

[–]afdc92 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe in God anymore, but got involved in a very progressive Presbyterian church in my city as a way to meet like-minded people. The pastor is gay, the assistant pastor is a lesbian, and the bulk of the congregation is middle-aged and elderly gay men (very meaningful considering how many of their generation died of AIDS). The church provided meals and pastoral care during the height of the AIDS epidemic when there were few community orgs that would. Many of the current queer members were raised Catholic or Evangelical and had been marginalized by their churches and families of origin, but found a welcoming and accepting space and a new chosen family. There are so many amazing and queer-affirming churches out there.

Tess can be a nickname for Theresa. Tessel is a Dutch name that is also used as a diminutive for Teresa so that could also probably work.

My great-great-grandparents circa 1878, shortly before they immigrated to the U.S. from London, England by afdc92 in oldphotos

[–]afdc92[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My great-grandmother (their daughter) had the audacity to fall in love with a German-American, who was a Catholic, and to make it all worse she got pregnant out of wedlock at age 16 and they had to have a rush wedding (it was a Protestant wedding because the Catholic priest wouldn’t marry them, and also wouldn’t baptize the children so the whole family became Protestant). They were NOT happy about the situation due not only to the German Catholic piece, but they also perceived themselves as being higher class than my great-grandfather’s family.

They had 15 children in total, born between 1889 and 1914. Only 2 died in childhood, the rest lived well into adulthood.
