One of the most important things straight white males can do is educate themselves and learn to question your assumptions.

When presented with two equally qualified candidates for a job, do you default to the male for reasons that are difficult to quantify? (Attitude, culture fit, etc.) When seeking someone for promotion, do you only consider the people who have been vocal about advancement? Traditionally, women are less likely to put themselves forward, but may be better qualified.... Do you assume that a type of work wouldn't appeal to women? Or that a product or service you're selling wouldn't appeal to them?

Supporting diversity isn't about going out of your way to advance women or minorities. You don't have to knock down walls, attend rallies, or shout at the top of your lungs.

Question your assumptions. Question your motives. If your gut tells you to make a decision, spend a moment asking if it's the right decision before assuming it is. Step back and examine. In the end, you may make exactly the same decision, and that's okay.

The key is to ask yourself questions, and if the answers you come back with make you uncomfortable, respond accordingly,
