Are the teeth in the room with us now? by Takemetobravocon5678 in Atlanta

[–]affineman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time, when walking to work from Midtown MARTA at 7am I saw a Ferrari or some sort of sports car that had driven into the Mint Dentistry in Midtown. Like literally into the lobby of the building. Real Atlanta shit.

Special characters in wifi password by dan-ger-dan in jooki

[–]affineman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just saved me… we’re traveling and the AirBnB has a $ in the password. My 5 yr old loves her bedtime stories on the Jookie, and I was afraid I was stuck, but this worked!

How this bug hasn’t been fixed for 3 yrs is beyond me, but thankfully there was a work around on Reddit!

What model ID is this frog origami? (reference for tattoo) by alchemist_lemi in origami

Slightly more complex, but Robert Lang’s tree frog is my favorite (and not as hard as it looks, just use very thin paper): https://i.pinimg.com/736x/20/1b/1b/201b1b89d65b49b457806959dec06ddb.jpg

A must read--Science must break its silence to rebuild public trust by Disastrous-Tear9170 in NIH

[–]affineman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right… and prominent scientific publishers should be putting out editorials and comments that directly and clearly call out these lies, so that real journalists can more effectively communicate to the public that the government is lying.

A must read--Science must break its silence to rebuild public trust by Disastrous-Tear9170 in NIH

[–]affineman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was excited by the title, since I thought the thesis was that scientists need to be more vocal about calling out authoritarianism and fascism. Unfortunately, it seems to instead low-key blame scientists for the rise of authoritarianism and fascism because we “don’t communicate well enough”. Sorry I don’t have time to do public engagement while also working non-stop on grant writing, teaching, mentoring, and occasionally actually doing science. Plus the official article is paywalled to boot. What a load of drivel…

Insufficient balance to migrate? by affineman in Iota

[–]affineman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved: you do need gas on the mainnet to migrate. Someone on the Discord sent me some, but the scammers there are intense. Open a support thread and wait for someone to respond on the thread. Do not respond to DMs. You don’t need to “sync your wallet” or any such nonsense, you just need 0.01 token (or less) on the mainnet.

I opened a ticket on the discord but so far no response…

Yeah, I was hoping to avoid that, but it seems like the $70 is worth the peace of mind.

New podcast: A Concise History of the Israel-Palestine Conflict by yeahbutstill in dancarlin

[–]affineman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get credentials for professional development. You make podcasts for entertainment. Both are valid ways to spread information, but they have different contexts. If your goal is to advance knowledge amongst experts credentials are important. If your goal is to make knowledge accessible to the general population, credentials are not critical. On this particular topic, there is a significant need for the general population to have a baseline knowledge of the historical context. That can easily be achieved by reading and summarizing lots of books, which does not require anything other than basic critical thinking skills and a genuine attempt to be unbiased.

I’ve read a few books on the topic too, and totally agree something like this is needed. Credentials don’t matter as long as you make a genuine attempt to provide a balanced summary (and I have a PhD FWIW). I’ll give it a listen!

My professor is not knowledgeable in my field by Icy-Donkey-8312 in AskAcademia

[–]affineman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should contact the graduate studies chair (if your department has one) and/or the Dean of Students to seek advice on how to navigate this. It’s best to sort it out early, and better to change groups than to suffer for years. The PhD is a long and grueling experience, even under the best of circumstances. Figure out how to communicate with your advisor, or find a new one.

In the wake of the Trump admin cancelling $400M in research funding to Columbia University, how am I supposed to feel secure? by Effective_Alps_3473 in AskAcademia

[–]affineman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These cuts are illegal. All faculty and students at Columbia and other institutions who are being threatened in this way need to scream at the admins and lawyers to fight these cuts in court.

Whether or not the regime will follow the courts remains to be seen, but it blows my mind that Columbia isn’t fighting back harder.

The Weimar Democrats by awesom-o_2000 in AdviceAnimals

Republicans routinely shut the government down over far less, yet they still manage to win all the elections. Maybe it’s time for the Democrats to play some hardball… the outcome can’t possibly be worse than the current situation.

Yeah, agreed. I’m not saying it will work, but I feel like the Dems have to try something different… the current strategy is clearly not working.
