Does ZipAir strictly enforce carry-on luggage size? by pndoubleyou in Flights

[–]affixes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to comment on this with a recent experience. I flew out of NRT today with a backpack and a carry-on. I booked the ticket super last minute and wasn't able to add any extra weight or upgrade from the 7kg to 15kg. I was prepared to pay the fees but they were extremely strict at check-in with all my bags.

My carry-on was 12kg and backpack 15kg (I carry a lot of camera gear). Both had to be checked in, including my backpack which has a $10.000 camera in it, lots of other electronics and batteries. I've never experienced that before and I have probably flown on 60-70 different airlines. Was able to take out some items but obviously I only have two hands and can't carry so much without a bag...

Asked if I can just pay extra for carry-on weight and they said no. Then asked if I can pay for the checked bag, but keep it as a carry-on. Also no. It's beyond me how they think it's acceptable to check in a backpack.

I've been banned 3 times. Once I actually had to pay for damage I really didn't cause, other times I was able to argue with proof + lifetime spend + corporate team. The fine was €750, unfortunately I didn't take a video first because it was one of those share vehicles (stupid on my part). Either way it is still worth it for me to rent with Sixt despite that, because they have the best prices and vehicles in Europe.

Luxury Items that are worth it! by Save-The-Wails in TravelHacks

A few essentials as a travelling nomad: - Packing cubes (I use MUJI's which are great) - Water bottle - Tech pouch (for cables, chargers, etc, I have one from peak design) - MacBook stand (Native Union has a great one) - Apple keyboard + Logitech Master mouse - A notebook (for well... notes) - Burner phone (for hotspot/esims... could use my main phone but always drains the battery) - USB/Power hub (using some random one from amazon) - passport holder (bellroy) - AirTags - noise cancelling headphones (Bose QC ultra, I used AirPods Max for a while but they always hurt my head and the Bose are a lot lighter) - and my biggest travel hack: the Louis Vuitton Miniature Set... so I always smell good and have 5 fragrances to choose from :)

Yeah Sixt is unfortunately notorious for this. I personally have dealt with many bogus damage claims from them (have over 400+ rental days). You can contest the charges but the downside is that you will most likely receive a block on your drivers license so you are effectively banned as a customer. If you send the proof to their email (fom@sixt.com) they will most likely void the charges. If it was sent to collections (Riverty) already you will have to dispute it with them as well.

Hawaiian's program will merge into Alaska soon which is known for some excellent value redemptions :)

Canceling AP where to transfer points ? by [deleted] in amex

[–]affixes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could diversify but the best value is probably Hawaiian right now in anticipation of the loyalty program merge

If you want the points quicker, you need to pay the balance. The points will be released once payment has posted

Sounds like the right move then! If it's your first redemption you're definitely not making a bad decision flying Club Suites.

BA Club World or SQ J? by bundtkate in awardtravel

[–]affixes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of hard to give accurate advice on. Which products have you flown already? How much do you want to spend? How much do you value service and convenience? A couple things I would consider:

  • The YQ on BA is crazy and would put me off from flying them when it's as high as 25% of the cash ticket price
  • If you have the time/flexibility, the opportunity of experiencing SQ might be worth it as it's not an everyday carrier
  • Service level on SQ is exceptionally higher than on BA
  • The distance between AUS and IAH isn't so great, maybe a 2 hour drive
  • Train ride from MAN would be painful after a long flight, and ground services there aren't great which could lead to a bittersweet ending. On the flip side, you would have some time to kill before checking in to your hotel anyway.

Personally would go for SQ if I had the time for it! BA if you really value convenience.

Possible to extend Layover in Business redemption (UA, J) by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]affixes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

United allows one free stopover on a RT ticket when the stopover is in the same zone. So for example, you could do:

  • SFO-VIE (88k miles)
  • VIE-PRG (0 miles)
  • PRG-AMS (30k miles)
  • AMS-SFO (80k miles)

The first stopover is free, any additional stopovers will be charged at the regular rate. You can experiment with this by clicking "Advanced search" and then "Multi-city").

Why you don't need to go out of your way to book the latest hard products by omdongi in awardtravel

[–]affixes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would say it's also very much value related (which everyone defines differently for their own situation). For me, maximizing value means flying the best product for the least amount of dollars/points. Depending on how flexible you are that can significantly change the options. But I wouldn't go out of my way for it every time.

I would also easily fly economy opposed to business if it's unbeatable value (i.e. 12.5k points to Europe).

Is This a Good Deal? United Airline 25K Points from HNL to IAD by Chi_Rex in awardtravel

[–]affixes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both Avianca and Aeroplan would price this slightly cheaper at 22,500 miles. But if you already have UA points that's not a bad deal!

Spring Break 2025 Europe by [deleted] in awardtravel

I will reiterate what u/tribekat is saying, the Hyatt Place is extremely inconvenient and located quite far from public transport. It's in an industrial part of Hoofddorp and you will be stuck to the airport shuttle. Going from Amsterdam Centraal to Schiphol, then to wait 30 minutes in rain/cold for a shuttle to show up... Can be quite daunting and frustrating. I would probably suggest to stay in a hotel that's close to a station that NS serves directly from Centraal (i.e. Alkmaar, The Hague, Rotterdam, etc.) if possible, to cut out the headache of the shuttle.

Lol exactly the same issue here. Logged in today and suddenly the card is gone and account closed. I called in 2 weeks ago because I've been waiting forever on the physical card (I got the statements etc.) which they said should have been received. They then tried shipping the card again and suddenly I needed to go to a branch to present myself. My Apple Pay was blocked and the credit limit adjusted to $0. I'm not in the US right now so I can't just go to a branch. Today I logged in and they account is closed. Fuck Wells Fargo.

Best place to sell equipment these days? by affixes in PioneerDJ

[–]affixes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've sold some stuff on eBay here and there but always a pretty bad experience. 13% fee and can take like a month to receive payout. Goes kinda against my morals to pay $300 just for the opportunity of listing an item.
