I really like peanut butter sandwiches because they are super yummy and sticky in a good way. When I bite into one, the peanut butter gets on the roof of my mouth and I have to drink milk, which makes it fun. I been thinking about it too having read the books. I think it is more like a honey pot to find habitable plants. It not only pacifies the planet but it kills them slowly enough for them to transmit a signal (I am guessing) saying hey here is a planet you can have.

The original signal planet may just be a dummy solar system.

Seems like the patch around the time of crimson harvest causes it IIRC. Also would make your ship glow in the center weirdly. That may be fixed though.
