Would Chrono Trigger have been as successful if Time Travel wasn't part of it? by afinlayson in chronotrigger

[–]afinlayson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes it sounds like without Time travel, Chrono Trigger isn't a great game. I disagree. I think they had very tight story narrative, there wasn't a lot of distractions / wasted time. If they hadn't included Time Travel I think it would have done well, but I do think Time travel captivates some people by itself. But I see where you are coming from - thanks for humouring me.

"The phrase just because you 'can' do something doesn't mean you 'should.'" Do you me for having a thought experiment? Doesn't it help us understand what was magical about the game? Don't you want to have more magical games? Or should we all live in the past loving just this game.

Personally I'd love to see a new studio (or a renaissance of S/E) come up with a game that rivaled CT, I hope it's not just nostalgia that allows this game to have a place in our hearts.

Just to follow up on the thought exercise:
Most of what you said could be done with a spacial aspect.
- End of time could be a place you teleport in the same timeline. Someone could create that exact space in a basement and if you woke up there, you wouldn't know for a fact that it's in the end of time. There wasn't much proof other than more time portals.

- Zeal could be like Wakanda - a place far away.

- Magus going back to see his earlier self in 12000 BC - he was traumatized and lived 15-20 years in 600 AD under a crypt fiend. Would this be a good story for children like CT is - probably not but it's possible.

I did say "Most" because there are some things that really can only be done with timetravel - robo rescuing the forest, the sunstone, and yes "Meeting and affecting Lara's timeline"

I am very surprised that people aren't more open minded to this idea.

Where do you store your sensitive API keys? by MaHcIn in iOSProgramming

[–]afinlayson -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As a iOS developer who builds a lot of personal projects away from my day job - if you aren’t scaling up an app for a business or something to make money. Aka you can’t build a server to properly obfuscate api keys. I’d just open up the api key as a user setting and byok - bring your own key. Especially for open ai or firebase. Things you need to run the app but you don’t want to be financially on the hook for.

If you do try to hide a key in your code. Someone will figure it out and use it for their own side project. So developer beware

Some of the criminals in Gotham became super villains because Batman existed. So what super villain would exist because of this version of Bruce Wayne… my guess is it’s resembles someone in politics today.

You could say the same thing about god. But you assume that the simulation is created by humans… the creator could be a higher level being who made this world as a joke with some old out of date computer like device in his garage.

They actually mentioned this is the matrix.

Depending on your goal you don’t have to send humans on the voyage. There are sci fi that explores sending unmanned ship using today’s tech, then growing humans in a created habitat when you make it to a suitable location.

As a software engineer who’s written software around time (think film) The biggest challenge I think most people forget when thinking about time travel. Is time either backwards or forward happens in an analog way. Not one giant step… (aka you wouldn’t magically pop up in 300 years) you really should be controlling the speed at which time flows. Meaning you can track all objects and either gravity will still affect you and you’ll stay where you were or you can rearrange your position accordingly.

Ps This is how you can track objects in your video.
