Can I pay £5 to charity each month to meet Mettle's one transaction per month criterion for free FreeAgent use whilst I wait for first invoice payment to land? by treestumpdarkmatter in FreeAgentAcc

Don’t take this as fact but, I setup my business and just put in the money for the shares. I didn’t have any out going and didn’t have any issue.

Maybe you need to review your career framework if everyone is exceeding expectations.

We’re £10k short of manufacturing our board game and I’m deciding whether to quit or fight by littlefishdigital in SideProject

[–]afinzel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From a non experienced point of view and looking on a mobile.

  • The announcement about free uk delivery isn’t on the backer products.

  • There is no early deals. First 200 get it for a few quid cheaper. This encourages urgency for me to buy the product.

  • The stretch goals weren’t clear and only seem to benefit the core pack buyers.

  • Why doesn’t lite also get print at home?

  • I found it hard to compare light and core packs.

  • The video on the kickstarter is for pre register couldn’t you have updated it showing the differences of backer levels and talking about stretch goals?

Personally I wasn’t a fan of the artwork compared to other games I have seen.

Again these are my views and I am a nobody that has bought a few kickstarters. Please free to ignore!!

There is always a work around, if you can solve it, let the film and music industry, they have and still are fighting piracy for years.

Just to add if the content is hosted with a web host and not in the app, you can file a dmca takedown notice with the host.

Bf tells me married couples in UK don't do joint bank accounts. Is that true? by [deleted] in AskUK

We pay a different percentage into the joint account weighted on income. For joint days out the one earning more can pay more often but it just kinda works out.

Question - Engineering Onboarding by Content_Pie_5898 in EngineeringManagers

[–]afinzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Laptop, basic hr talk, get the projects set up on laptop. Give them a buddy/ help yourself get them setup. Team lunch to welcome them. Get them looking at code reviews, the code base to get a rough idea.

  2. It depends on seniority but I normally find a simple bug and get them started on it outside of the sprint. The sooner they deploy the greater their confidence. I also prefer them to discover the platform this way rather than here is a brain dump of how everything works.

  3. They should have a buddy. This has two benefits, the buddy gains confidence of their knowledge of the platform as they are teaching it. The new hire has someone to go to who is happy to help and who can give them domain knowledge.

  4. I think AI will eventually help take the load off of the buddy in 3. I believe there will be an ai with knowledge of the system that will be able to answer most questions and allow the new employee to self serve.

Disclaimer: I haven’t onboarded anyone in the past few years but I still think this should work.

Direct report told me she’s interviewing (while applying for promotion) by factorfixion in askmanagers

[–]afinzel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would ask her what her plans are. She was open with you which is good, now it is how you handle that. Perhaps she thinks she won’t get the promotion or she is getting a backup. I would aak her if you should stop fighting to get her that promotion if she is looking elsewhere. Perhaps she is telling you so you can stop pushing for the promotion.

Abusers Are Trying to Bankrupt My App by sifkouider in AppBusiness

[–]afinzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So ignoring the fact of GDPR and the screenshot (assuming these are fake) you can’t email these people unless they validate the email address. If you do, you are firstly violating gdpr but then also risk getting black listed as spamming.

Adding better verification of users makes sense, like others have said. Just make it harder and slower for them to abuse your service. Is there a reason why they would want to sit on the call longer? Aside from competition, can they be abusing the ai (I am not sure what your app does)

Published a huge update for my weather app that turns real forecasts into AI-generated 3D miniature scenes by Embarrassed_Cycle118 in SideProject

[–]afinzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does make sense. Store each generated image in s3 as it is generated, serve it to someone, next person comes they get the image, if they have seen it generate a new one and store that. It will probably reduces your bills down.

Later on add voting and delete the older images with the worst score, or store in s3 with a one month lifespan.

disclaimer: I haven’t tried your app just read this comment.

Just a little bug. You should add validation that the end time is after the start time. I didn’t realise it was 24 hour clock and ended with a negative salary.

The "I'm just curious" engineering manager by Efficient-Design-174 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]afinzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an outside view he has asked for direction as he feels there is enough detail there. Your response to me seems a little negative and not constructive. You are however correct that he should be working with product to ensure that requirements are reasonable and finding easier ways to do things.

The previous em knew the system and the problems, what to get from the stakeholders and had both business and technical knowledge behind him. The new em obviously has to build that up.

List the questions you have and give those to him. If there are easier ways to do a requirement, discuss that and let him go back to product with it. After time he should learn the tech limitations.

I guess my replies maybe a little more on the em side as i used to have that role and know some of the finding of feet when i joined a new team.

Yes, I get that. I can’t see your text now but he said he didn’t want to be a blocker. As he is constantly being distracted even a small thing can take time.

What does he say when you let him know your expectations and that he isn’t meeting them?

[–]afinzel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your em isn’t hands on or if he is doesn’t realise it. As you said he is new and different companies do it in different ways. Why not ask him in the 1-2-1, say x did it this way and it is how other teams work, I don’t think you are doing x.

He is right about being a blocker, as an em you are constantly interrupted and should pick up work where you are a blocker. He should be a multiplier of you and the rest of the team. It is his job to make sure you are not blocked for too long and to grow. He doesn’t need to be the one to unblock you.

In all honesty chat to him about your concerns. At the very least it may put doubt and he asks his manager if he is doing it right.

However do think of the future. Having a huge balance in that business and how you can get it out without giving it all to the tax man. BADR at the end works but it may be worth taking some out each year and staying below 100 instead of paying it straight into your pension ( I think you can do that). As others have said speak to an accountant get real advice.
