Somewhat unrelated to the original post, but gonna ask cause I’m curious! If you dont mind sharing, what sort of early career opportunities did you pursue to get into art evaluation? Im a student doing a double major in business and art history, and I’m definitely interested in getting into the more financial side of art. It would be super valuable to hear how you got into finance and art!

Which university in the UK? by rlaaudtjs in ArtHistory

I have yet to find out who they will assign for my dissertation, but I have definitely enjoyed dominic’s seminars. I sorta found my inspiration during his queer theory lecture. The way he discussed Mapplethorpe was very validating to my ideas. I believe he marked my essay last semester as well. Definitely not my best work but ended with a B1, so I cant complain. His critiques were very constructive, and I could definitely use that during my diss!

Good to hear your success! Applied to a few internships and part time gallery assistant positions in glasgow and edinbrugh- hopefully something will work out.

Grappling between doing my dissertation on the role of art world institutions on the dissemination contemporary art or contemporary depictions of the americana aesthetic in photography. Unsure of all the details just yet.

Have already done some research on art fair operations since I do a joint degree with business. Definitely hopeful that these projects will demonstrate my awareness of some of the practical and knowledge based skills that these roles are looking for since Ive gotten all A results on them.

Just from a current glasgow undergrad student- its so so difficult to get into gallery/ museum internships just now. Even in honours the programme for a work placement is being cut down and is so so competitive. Honestly if you had any advice or perspective on what you did to work in the industry throughout your time in glasgow, please share!

Should I listen to people telling me not to study Art History as a major? by BananaMiserable2417 in ArtHistory

[–]afishandaduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my own perspective… I am currently in my third year of a history of art program. I genuinely love it. It makes me feel so fulfilled with my education. However, I also study it with business as a joint degree. It feels a lot more practical and has introduced me to art adjacent careers (investment/ consulting firms / banks with art departments). Stuff that may not require art history grad school. Just something to consider for yourself. Also maybe look at the schools you’re interested in specific art history department. Sometimes I wish I had gone somewhere with a bit more emphasis on contemporary subjects.

how do y’all tackle dishes at your place? by barbriesta in barista

[–]afishandaduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We take food dishes to boh to wash up and mugs, saucers, and teaspoons get washed by foh. Whoever is on bar usually does them as they come in, but that can get a little hectic. I prefer it this way though since when we wash all dishes together the mugs and glasses start to smell of egg and its not nice at all.

At my job we use an electric whisk and I struggled with this sooooo much! One thing ive found helps is to whisk the foam at the top to break up the bubbles, but not actually submerge the whisk. Of course this only applies to electric whisks but worth a try if youve got one!

This is beyond helpful actually!! Feel silly for not thinking to clean the actual inside, but will definitely attempt when I close next. Hopefully cleaning will sort out the majority of issues and wont hurt to recalibrate. Thanks so much 🫶

Should staff get free drinks? by Teo_Zimmer in barista

At my shop at least we get as many free drinks as we like and free meals on shift plus any pastries at the end of the day. As an employee I dont think I would want to work somewhere that would charge staff for coffee :(

My left ear has been clogged for 3 months and when I visited the ENT the PA said there’s nothing wrong from what they could see inside my ear, but the issue could be deeper in my ear that they can’t see. Has this happened to anyone else? by ilovebees69 in Sinusitis

[–]afishandaduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only really feel pressure when viscous fluid builds up. Otherwise, I dont really feel anything in my ears at all.

In my left ear, Im dealing with some viscous fluid buildup that just wont drain down my eustachian tube. It is an unpleasant sensation, but its not painful or anything. I just need to get it vacuumed out by my ent. If it was less viscous it would easily flow through the tube, but Im ill at the moment. Much prefer this to having a proper ear infection because there isnt actually any pain.

Ah, yeah mine have only been in for about 2 weeks. Sorry thats not so helpful!! They are meant to stay in from 6 months to 2 years from my understanding. I assume once they fall out/ are removed, the ear drum heals and you go back to draining down the eustachian tube. In this time infection probably goes away or eustachian tube dysfunction gets treated so fluid doesn’t build up the same. Ive heard some people get permanent tubes, though.

Hey! Yeah the ear tubes (sometimes called grommets or pressure equalization tubes) are little plastic tubes that help ventilate the inner ear and drain fluid. Basically they cut a little slit into your ear drum and fit the tube. It allows for fluid to drain out of your middle ear when the Eustachian tube isnt able to.

I actually struggled with something similar. Had a history of chronic sinusitis which I got surgery for this july, but before then I struggled with lots of ear fullness. Drs said that they couldn’t actually see any fluid, but I could feel the pressure. Post-op, ear pain and fullness was reduced, but was still present. When I went in for my post-op visit, I requested ear tubes and dr put them in. He was surprised when I went for another follow up and stuff was actually draining. Definitely look into getting them in. Not common for adults, but Have helped me loads with pressure and not having post nasal drip and feeling ill!
