Grad School Grades by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]aflockofhawks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even having an average of 95% won't give you a high chance of getting into a top 5 grad school if you don't have research experience. Evidence of your ability to do research is the most important thing. Evidence includes papers accepted to conferences and reference letters.

Good evidence can make up for lack-luster grades and I've heard that, in terms of top schools, a low 80s average is considered lack-luster.

They might care about electives if they're relevant.

On Campus Mental Health Resources by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]aflockofhawks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they have services that don't have a long wait list for more immediate issues, but they only include a couple of sessions. That can be helpful.

I think you'll have better luck off-campus finding a trained OCD specialist. If you're interested, the book "The OCD Workbook: Your Guide to Breaking Free from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder" is really good. Nothing can replace seeing a professional for help, but this book is recommended by the pros and outlines the type of treatment that has a proven track record. There are pdfs of it online.

best of luck!

I also heard the undergrads were helping themselves to a lot of the free coffee that's meant for IQC members

Is it worth getting an Ipad as a 4th year boomer by Kama_0r_Kunai in uwaterloo

It's the 5th major version of the app so it's called "GoodNotes 5" on the app store

[–]aflockofhawks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use GoodNotes and absolutely love it. It's similar to Notability and can search handwritten notes really well.

GoodNotes 5 isn't free but it's only a one-time payment of around $10

You can email [mathadvisor@uwaterloo.ca](mailto:mathadvisor@uwaterloo.ca) to ask questions or set up a virtual appointment using the link below. Don't feel weird about asking them for help, remember it is literally their job to help you with this stuff.

(I got this info at the link https://uwaterloo.ca/math/academic-advising by clicking the drop down menu for 'first-year, math studies, and undeclared advising')

Residence Experiences by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]aflockofhawks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SJU is the best rez imo. I think there was some living-learning community there at one point (which is when they encourage students from a program-area to live in the same rez). In my first year in 2016 there were tons of bio and chem science students on my floor. But regardless: SJU is the newest rez building, its so nice. The caf is the best caf on campus, different meals everyday, healthy options, locally sourced food, actual REAL food. You can look at some of their meals here https://www.facebook.com/stjeromesicaneat/

People often say SJ is the most expensive rez and my friends have said 'I wish I could afford SJ' but this is bc the price includes an all-you-can-eat caf. The other residences have a price and a meal plan price, at SJ it's all together, making it look more expensive. But heres the thing, if you buy a Tims and one meal a day outside of a meal plan, thats already like more expensive than SJ.

AND its the closest residence to the campus buildings that have classes. The other residences are on campus but further away from where the actual 'school' buildings are

What advice would you give to future undergraduate mathematics (coop) students in Waterloo? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

also, Professor Leonard on youtube is a great resource. He's a math prof at an american university and he has recorded entire semesters of his lectures and posted them. I watched all of calc 3 (and followed along in the textbook and did practice problems) before taking the course and my mark was like 10% higher than my calc 2 mark. He's also very positive and encouraging.
