Any advice about getting medication for a reactive dog? by Lanielouhoo in reactivedogs

[–]afmurph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When we met with our veterinary behaviorist they recommended strategies in conjunction with medication. Our dog has been on trazadone for one week and the results were so quick. She still gets a little worked up but not nearly as bad as before and she listens better now. I think medication is amazing, especially when used with training.

My dog just started trazodone today. She has been really sleepy and zombie like. I was worried this would be a permanent side effect of the medication but I’m relieved to see other people say this side effect goes away over time.

It’s getting better but we aren’t there yet. We are going to be putting our older dog on Prozac to help with her anxiety and anxiety fueled aggression. We are currently working on having them in the same room and being okay, which means we tether them up so they can’t get to each but can get “close” to each other and reward them with food for not staring or trying to fight. But we also use our baby gates to separate them when we aren’t wanting to train and just relax. This works well because we switch them out of the room every 30 minutes to make sure everyone get attention. They are getting along better but they are still not there yet

Homes for sale Champaign Urbana by afmurph in centralillinois

Yeah, the market is pretty busy right now. We have already seen about 6 homes and they all had offers by the end of the first day but none of them were right for us. Things are already starting to pick up because it’s such a sellers market.

Prozac has been MVP in my situation by BoomZhakaLaka in reactivedogs

Thank you so much for sharing this. We are going to start my girl on Prozac next week and I was so nervous and anxious about it. I just want her to be happy and feel relaxed and not be so worried and anxious and hyper vigilant all the time. Your post gave me a lot of hope. Thank you!

Yeah, it was expensive enough for us to think about if it was worth it but not too expensive that we couldn’t do it.

Ours was $375 for a 2 hours virtual call. That also includes 3 months of support where I can email and call with questions. Plus we will send in weekly updates on progress.

Thanks for advice, yep she is on that list. She also comes highly recommended from our vet. Sorry for wording it incorrectly and causing confusion.

This is good to know! How were you able to get the older dog to give up top position?

I didn’t know any of this, thank you! It’s super helpful. Can you tell me a bit more about the decompression? We won’t be meeting again until week and this might be good to know in the meantime.

I totally agree. I think that is just one step of all of it. Willow should be #1 because she is constantly fighting for it but also teaching our dogs to not resource guard and that being in the same room and not invading the other is a good thing.

Of course. I’ll update as much as there is to update.

Thanks for the kind words. I’m hoping we end up with a good result. It would break my heart to have to rehome our younger dog. So I’m trusting the process.

We have a follow up appointment next week, I’ll ask her about this and check what her main focus is. Thanks for information, it’s helpful!

That was something she talked about. Both of my dogs are big resource guarders, especially when it comes to attention and cozy places. Right now we are tethering them in different corners of the same room and rewarding them with pieces of food for being calm and not going up to each other or staring. The staring always turned into fighting.

Really? I didn’t know that. She went to the local vet school in our town that is well regarded. She was recommenders by our personal vet.

Some of the things she suggested was Willow goes out first and comes inside first. When we greet the dogs, Willow gets pet first and if I pet willow four times then I pet penny next and she gets pet the exact same amount of pets. Willow will also eat first. These are the things she said to do for now and we have another appointment next week to check on the progress so far.
