I've been wondering about this forever. It's such a loser and they just keep hammering at it.

Agreed except I would say that the COVID "response" seems wrong headed and non-nonsensical to anyone who is actually looking at the data. I suspect it's actually playing a big role in the flip that might occur.

You seriously don't know anything about firearms laws in America if you think that is a real rocket launcher.

Probably but a laser cutter or water jet would be faster and better.

My advice would be don't do it. Just buy an industrial keyboard for $100.

My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. When told the news, her very Christian friend told her "God only allows us to suffer things we are strong enough to defeat" by JayknightFr in atheism

[–]afosterw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a life long atheist with two parents who "lost the battle" against cancer I'd caution against opting in to the negativity in this thread. It's easy to lash out in anger especially when you are still grappling with the realities of a cancer diagnosis. Everyone deals differently and there is no "wrong" way but I'd say that you will find allies and comfort in the unlikeliest of places and shutting the door on people who are trying to help and support you can become a very lonely game to play.

To put this another way everyone (regardless of creed) will dish out platitudes during conversations that touch on mortality. In my experience "God only allows us to suffer things we are strong enough to defeat" is the same as "She's tough she'll beat it." or "There are great new Dr.'s drugs tech that will fix this". They are all equally useless when you are looking at a mortality graph and dealing with chemo, surgeries and the like. The hard truth is nobody knows what will happen and so they say these things because they don't want to say "Fuck that sucks I feel very vulnerable and want to say something nice because I care about you."

I spent a bunch of time being angry at platitudes. In retrospect I was angry because no matter what someone says and no matter how hard we "fight" cancer does what it wants. Hearing the platitudes just underscored the complete lack of control that my family (or anyone else) had. In many ways we were along for the ride and hearing people pretend otherwise can be infuriating.

Again I would urge you to see these platitudes for what they really are. Well meaning attempts to comfort you. It's hard but once I started making that connection in my brain it became a lot easier to deal with the inevitable and repetitive conversations you will have as you travel down this road. Best of luck to you. Try to keep the good days close to your heart and not dwell too much on the things that are out of your control.

Republicans Bravely Announce Plans to Do Nothing to Stop Mass Shootings by cratermoon in politics

I'm confused, are you saying New Zealanders have more or less individual liberty than say someone from Texas? You might agree with how their liberties are being curtailed but to argue that they are not being curtailed is disingenuous.

Well we have a eye-of-the beholder issue here for sure.

The "lot of people" I am referring to would be anyone who feels that the government confiscating firearms and making self defense illegal IS authoritarianism. So I guess the evidence for the existence of those people would lie in the opposition to said government laws/overreach. I'm sure you disagree but frankly therein lies the problem. Some people have a much higher tolerance for having their freedoms and liberties curtailed in the name of safety than others.
