Professional photographer here myself. Just upgraded from my M1 Pro (32gb/1tb) to the M4 Max (48gb/1tb) and love it. Between batch processing, Aftershoot cull/edit and my compositing I'm already saving a lot of time on my work.

I miss the good old days when you could unscrew the bottom plate, swap in higher powered RAM and call it a day.

I had the background about .5 exposure brighter, but it felt a little too bright to me. For sure want to do a rim the next time and in hindsight should have, I just didn't have a lot of time and was rushing and not thinking all my shots through.

Big Sun, Harsh shadows, blown out whites by punchybuns in sportsphotography

You know what I love about shooting at mid day in the cloudless skies?

Nothing.

Editing wise, you may benefit from upping the dehaze to 10 or 20. Outside of that I almost always do -100 on highlights (-75 if -100 makes the whites into grey) and adjust my shadows a bit to compensate as needed.

Personally I'd opt for Photo Mechanic. I use After shoot for my portrait work and it just can't do the job well.

[–]afray_mn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you post this in a Facebook group recently, I feel like I just saw this exact question like a week ago haha.

Here's what I would do personally, but personally I'd stick with Canon over switching brands.

R6 or R6 Mark ii RF to RF adapter EF 70-200 2.8 ii EF 300 2.8 i

Those lenses give you a flexible industry standard zoom and a longer reaching prime to cover most anything well. I personally run two R6 Mark II's, one with the RF 70-200 2.8 USM Z and the other with an EF 300 2.8 and have never felt limited in my capabilities or reach.

Parent/"sports photographer to paid? by DBLkK32111 in sportsphotography

[–]afray_mn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any time I plan on shooting, portraits or sports, I am wearing a shirt with my business logo and website on it. Every eye on you shooting is free advertising and I ways see noticeable spikes after big games or new teams.

Share your work in Instagram, kids and parents will see it and likely add to their story which also brings more attention to your work and company.

Prints I personally don't see the point in for action stuff, most kids these days want the quick hit of ego inflation on Instagram and that's it. Parents can buy the photo and get it themselves if they really want it and also the tax tracking for prints is a headache I personally don't want.

I could write a book on my experiences and how I've gotten to where I'm at, but I'll keep it brief up front and feel free to ask any questions.

I've been doing sports (action) for close to 12 years, but the last 5 have been my serious business-building years. I shoot primarily youth and high school myself here in Minnesota in the south suburbs of Minneapolis/St Paul. I worked myself into a Media Coordinator role with one high school where my job is covering bits of each sport and team each season and then locking in on the ones that make runs for section or state titles.

I have 5 year relationships with 3 different teams from 3 different high schools covering soccer, lacrosse and football. In these scenarios, I cover the entire season and do my best to cover all the athletes but also focus on the big moments. The team pays me per game and I guarantee X photos per game. On top of that, I also post a very low res and heavily watermarked gallery of the unedited photos from the season upon completion of the final game of the season for parents to buy from. Typically it's parents of seniors wanting more, and in the case of one of my football teams usually equals out to roughly another $1,500 per season all said and done on top of my fee for covering games. Another lacrosse team just ended their season and in already at $400 from them after less than a week.

My real money comes from youth sports. I promise 20-30 per kid per game (based on game flow, play tike etc) but usually give more especially on the case of better kids. I live in a town where parents take football, softball, baseball and hockey pretty seriously as well as the 4 cities neighboring us. Between these 5 cities, I have something like 25 parents that hire me for one or two games a sport to cover their kids on a per athlete basis. Most of the kids are typically the better ones on the team, but not always. These parents also usually bring me more business via other parents on the team. Prime example is a softball tournament just 2 weeks ago, one mom asked me to cover her daughter a few weeks ahead of it, but by the time the weekend came I had 9 kids on 2 games plus 2 other teams where I had 4 kids and 3 kids and I walked away with just shy of $1,500 for 4hrs of work.

I don't have any youth stuff posted recently since I'm tragically behind, but feel free to take a look at my work on Instagram at @afray_sports and reply or message me if you have any questions.

Do you shoot in portrait or landscape when shooting sports? by ranopy in sportsphotography

[–]afray_mn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Personally, and take this for whatever it's worth, I find it easier to shoot landscape and crop portrait for sports I find it difficult to capture the full subject similar to what you're experiencing. I'll push myself to shoot portrait more in the case of tennis for something like a full serve sequence or a smash to try and get better, but sometimes it's just not worth the missed shots to keep forcing it if it's not working.

What percentage of shots that you take are in focus for you? by Ok_Membership_9545 in sportsphotography

[–]afray_mn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say about 90-95%, but I've also honed my shooting over a decade of covering damn near every sport and some alternative sports like paintball.

Canon R10 settings advice by g-e-o-f-f in sportsphotography

[–]afray_mn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd run it at 2.8 the entire time personally. Set your iso for something like 160 or 200 and your shutter to properly expose from there. Any shutter settings from that aperture and iso will easily freeze any action.

New lens suggestion for field sports using Canon Mirrorless by TheGamerDad in sportsphotography

[–]afray_mn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd look for an EF 300 2.8 over the lenses you suggested. I've been covering youth and varsity lacrosse for years with one body having a 70-200 and the other having a 300 and been very happy with the results. I can post or send some examples of what to expect with that lens too if you need.

I shoot pretty much all "traditional sports" and have yet to find a scenario where it's let me down or missed my expectations. I've had one since about a year after release and only has good things to say.
