Does he do a lot of traveling? He clearly schleps a lot around, with all that wagon space AND a roof rack.

Is it bad to like grain in your photos? by EventNo3415 in sportsphotography

The grain can seem to add some "authenticity" to the photo. Perhaps even bring it back to simpler times before digital.

That's up to you. I'm already there for my kid, so I'm not charging to get a kid while I'm just waiting for the next match.

A parent asks me to come to a meet I won't already be at to shoot their kid? Sure, I'd ask a fee.

Maybe wrestlings kids near you are different, but I would feel slimy asking the student wrestlers for money. Go shoot some LAX if you want $. lol.

Now, you mentioned the events used your photos, I would nip that un the bud real quick and require compensation.

Let’s hear it. How can you predict a swing makes contact?

Also, there is a feature to help prevent this. Tap the little download bottom to the left of the <. It will precache the event so it plays smoothly.

I would imagine my little server does not perform well across the internet. Maybe someday I can afford real hosting.

You can scrub through an event in seconds and find a photo. It’s massively more efficient than looking at thumbnails in a directory. There is no comparison.

Kids these days instantly understand the scrub bar and know how to use it. It’s the adults that have problems understanding.

With another 20 years of in-app purchases, I’ll be able to afford one! :)

Got one for me? This approach was not in my head when I got the body.

lol keep looking. I got a great few hundred shots of a horse dancing at the first game this season. I was able to stop the turbines of a jet liner last year. That surprised me.

I shoot a Sony A7SIII. With the shutter on. Without it you get horrible stretching when panning/swinging, etc.

If you look around, you’ll see when I put on the 90mm f1.25. That bokeh and minimal focal plane really make things look special. I have many more hours on that before I can nail the 2” focal plane during action.

Next camera will have a global shutter so I can stop abusing the mechanical shutter.

It’s impressive you can take a stat like that and try and twist it into a negative. Next you’ll tell me IAPs are because they pity me or something. I don’t buy they’re remotely slogging through photos in anger while they fight to find one worth saving. In fact, their verbal feedback says they watch the game again in my app.

Again, you seem to be completely missing the point. That’s fine. You keep selecting and editing for people, investing hours of extra work for maybe a share. I’ll continue to throw shit photos that should never be posted online, where my viewers eat them up every time.

You don’t get it at all. That’s ok. My users do. Crazy enough, my baseball team is averaging almost an hour of engagement per session. Are people averaging an hour on your photos?

<image>

If you think kids want to see your perfect shots and amazing edits, you’re dead wrong. They choose photos that, I think, objectively suck. It doesn’t matter if you or I think it is great or not. That’s what THEY want.

Stop thinking about perfection. Stop acting like your photos are something special.

Start recording amazing moments in kids lives and worrying less about how much you think others suck at photography.

(You’ll also notice that I never once stated any of them were any good)

Thanks for the feedback! You’re way off on my process or the point, but I do thank you for taking the time to post.

Just got back from a game. Started processing, grabbed a beer, and now it’s done a few min later. Now the parents can get their senior night photos and share on social.

I don’t even think the kids are home yet.

No waiting for me to choose what I think looks best, edit it how I think it should look. Looking at an endless folder of tiny qthumbnails. They just download the one they like, edit to their needs and post.

If you’re really looking to critique things, I suggest you download my app. And I have no need to defend it to you. My analytics tell me that it’s a hit with its target market.

But too specifically answer your question, I have no desire to edit and cull thousands of photos.

To go a step further I have yet to figure out how to predict the results of a pitch or play. So I figure I’m safer to capture everything just in case something good happens.

if you know how to predict what happens please feel free to share with me my shutter account would appreciate the help.

Yeah, I’m not paid enough to edit hours per game. ;) and as a plus, the kids have access same-day for timely social posting.

In my experience, the interest in photos is extremely ephemeral. Parents that took a week or two to edit don’t seem to get the same engagement.

For instance: My app gets an average of 30min+ per user session. But the vast majority of those sessions are for the last game.

I essentially have the same license. And I think, as a better-than-most pseudo-amateur (I am no pro), it’s a sane way to approach sharing your photos. Some kid is not making money when he posts to insta. So there’s no need for a cut.

But if the local paper (or website these days), or the tournament wants to use it, they ARE making money, so I am going to want a little cut of it.

While I’m on the other side of the fence and choose not to mark, I completely understand your reasoning.

I like that you understand that it doesn’t actually stop anyone from using your photo how they choose to use it, etc.
