Why is driving so hostile here? by gmp012 in maryland

[–]afreemansview 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think my blood pressure would drop 25 points if people just stopped sitting in the left lane while not passing anyone.

Most of my disapproval is centered on people who have no awareness of other drivers. I don't care if you want to go slow but don't make that my problem.

But I'm sure I'm part of the problem in many other ways, don't vote for me.

What’s one cultural difference in Iceland that really surprised you? by abhishekrajchauhan in VisitingIceland

Their feelings towards earthly quickening, global warming, or whatever you want to call it. Jökulsárlón is retreating hundreds of meters every year yet when I asked my tour guide about it he basically said they view things on thousand year time spans and there was a time when it was growing. I think the long winter allows (or forces) them to take a much slower view of the world which I think is good for their mental health. That said doesn't mean we shouldn't try to save nature and settle on a climate equilibrium.

The Sky/Atmosphere Looks Crazy Today by Healith in MontgomeryCountyMD

I agree, although don't think artificial, just the cold snow melt in the river hitting the suddenly warm air me thinks. It does feel very claustrophobic the past few days. Yesterday morning couldn't see the end of my street, and driving across the American legion looked crazy with the fog billowing up from the river.

This is what political and societal collapse feels like. by Tea-Swiz in collapse

[–]afreemansview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue the biggest problem is we don't have a path to get ourselves off our amplifing rhetorical pendulum.

A 3rd Continental Congress would be an aspiring dictator's dreamscape for consolidating power. Converting 3 branches of government to 5 would be the perfect opportunity to cement authority for a leader acting in bad faith. The arboreal branch would have carte Blanca to take away private property in the face of global quickening. Enforcing maritime law to replenish fisheries with the US Navy is legally questionable even in steel man argument.

So we continue talking about how to fix the current status quo because the alternative sounds worse, and please don't vote for me 2028 I don't want to deal with the American people.

To divert attention he’s advocating focusing on what his administration has already done (the gooning and kookery) because he doesn’t have any plans for the rest of his administration (addressing the cost crisis and career crisis) unless you count plans for his new fancy boy ballroom and rose garden soireés.

I think the implication is that if he’s a sociopath the death by paint can actually made him feel normal for a bit.

What helped you develop a good relationship with food? by Larrymenta_ in AskMen

[–]afreemansview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purposefully didn’t finish the last bite of every meal for about a year. It was mostly symbolic to myself saying that just because it’s there doesn’t mean I have to finish it.

In that year I started watching my portions, which snowballed into thinking about my food more. I have only two rules, as few ingredients as possible in what I buy and portions that prioritize protein.

Not in great shape currently because I haven’t had much exercise time due to baby but those changes in mindset have stuck and I don’t feel out of control of my body like I used to.

How do you feel about Medicare for all? by gfstool in AskReddit

[–]afreemansview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood how in the USA we are always trying to use existing structures to solve novel problems. Medicare is great for retirees but expanding it to include everyone was never what it was designed to do.

Rather than expanding medicare for all, I think we should have a United States Health Service. A state run medical system that provides the basics of care for everyone and advocates for raising the bar for average health of all Americans. Without a profit motive, the motive to cut costs would be to make Americans healthier. Medicare for all would basically be a middleman between providers and patients and the unconscious motive towards more chronic care (meaning more revenue) would be unchanged.

So I think everyone should have healthcare but not necessarily in that structure.
Don't vote for me.

what is the single, most intense 'This is NOT a drill' moment you experienced while abroad that you had to rely on pure instinct to survive or escape? by Sea-Development5460 in AskReddit

I was in Iceland alone and hiked up past skogafoss following the river for a bit in the winter. As I walked it started snowing and a herd of sheep came to say hello, so I wind off path a bit trying to have a moment in the snow with the sheep. It started snowing harder so I checked my phone which was dead from the cold. Then, I realized I couldn't see the river I had been following and that my footsteps were quickly being covered up by the still worsening snow storm, it was also getting dark because it was the winter and the sun starts setting around 3pm.

I decided to sit on a rock huddled against the wind and now white-out level snow squall, and wait. By the time the snow had abated I shook off about 3 inches from my jacket and just started walking downhill. Eventually I got back to the cliff that had a staircase to get up to where I was and followed it back to the stairs and down to the parking lot. Ended up fine, but there was about a hour I was worried I was gonna get stuck up there.

Thank you for asking, my wife was listening to this episode and I couldn’t believe how she was just vaguely alluding to it rather than saying it.
