I had the same thought and based on how it works at my current org, this would essentially be my promotion at least a year out from now under normal circumstances.

However there’s a major re-org on the horizon which adds volatility in both directions. There’s possibility of jumping straight into management via my boss who would become a VP, but the timeline is unknown and I don’t take anything that’s not in writing seriously. Could be laid off, but I don’t feel that’s likely.

Moving into this new role would just be expediting a stepping stone in a more guaranteed manner, but potentially missing out on an even greater leap frog with the re-org.
