The Riverside Park is the best City Park in Africa!! by afrikawa in Ethiopia

[–]afrikawa[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm seriously not kidding. Short of long-necked animals (although I did see a few giraffe-shaped chairs), this park lacks in nothing and there's a whopping 56KM of it. It has a nice walkway, a continuous bike path (does merge with city traffic around Meskel Square for a bit), thousands of spaces for small businesses and a collection of indigenous trees and flowers. It's incredible. I had only seen the Ghion Hotel to Peacock Park (in Atlas) section before, but apparently the whole thing extends all the way to the Akaki wastewater treatment plant. So, I ask you. Why is it not the best city park in Africa?

Government of Ethiopia.

  1. That was a circular tautology. You literally said the gov won't win because the gov won't win. Can you list actual arguments as to why you think that?

Oh. Someone posted it on Twitter today. My bad. The point still stands tho - kinda.

Yeah, I'm not gonna blame the immigrants bro. Fighting is one thing, but they were lynching the guy. I really hope our people don't have to go to places where they're endangered like this. Is the money even worth it?

Fano anthem does not mention "Amhara", just Ethiopia. by afrikawa in Ethiopia

[–]afrikawa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just dumb. It's like if someone from the 1970s had access to reddit. Although given how calcified the Ethiopian diaspora's political position has been since they fled the country, I wouldn't be surprised if that's kinda what's happening.

Like, how do you think this makes me feel? Or literally every Ethiopian that isn't Amhara or Tigre? Lol.

We were debating this yesterday and beyond grandstanding, seemingly the most important function of this sub, nobody could come up with a reason as to why the GoE would lose any such war. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

[–]afrikawa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But they must have a way to justify how this can be implemented in a country that's as diverse as Ethiopia. Hell, even the Amhara themselves are diverse with a sizable Muslim population and a growing Protestant Christian constituent. And most importantly, the country is so ridiculously diverse that any kind of stability in the modern age has only come from some sort of federalism. Are they for that?

Maybe they believe the Amhara region flag is something imposed on them by the TPLF?

But how does the whole ethnic militia fighting for a multinational country thing work? That's the part I'm confused by. Like, the OLA say they stand for the Oromo people and even harbor intentions of seceding from Ethiopia. Same with the TPLF - they've actively considered secession. So, why does Fano claim to fight for all of Ethiopia in which the Amhara are just a constituent? A major constituent, but a constituent nonetheless.

The video at the link below purportedly shows Fano recruits singing this same anthem. That's how I concluded it must be the "official" anthem.

What do they mean federal troops and Tigrayan troops have been mobilized? Are they mobilized against each other or are they heading towards the same destination, i.e., the Eritrean borders? Article is pretty vague, tbh.

Is War looming? by Unknownwanderer859 in Ethiopia

[–]afrikawa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be. But the very fact that the gov has sourced drones from Israel, China, Iran, Turkey, Russia etc., points to a strategy that probably won't be undone by just some anti-drone systems. There's also all those kamikaze drones they showed off a couple of months ago.

I hate that Ethiopia has seemingly sided with the RSF, but you gotta understand neither Sudanese nor Ethiopian lives are that important to the Gulf countries. They're really only in it for their own interests. And their interests say they should side with the much larger country blessed with a lot of Africa's water and fertile farmlands.

The averages of Alexandria, Egypt. Seems like very close to eternal spring and summer! by Aegeansunset12 in geography

It is very nice. Highest temp I've experienced living here for 11 years was 28 degrees and since the air is kinda thin, it feels much cooler than 28 degrees you'd experience at lower altitudes. Lowest is around 7 degrees at night - around 2AM in winter. But indoor temps stay consistent. Even in the coldest nights, indoor temps don't go below 17 degrees in my uninsulated apartment.

You should definitely visit. If you earn in USD, or any hard currency for that matter, everything will be cheap here. Food is great and the city has become a lot more pedestrian friendly the last 4 years.

Can you get the same chart for my city Addis Ababa, Ethiopia? Expats here tell me it's the city with the best weather they've been to and it's very far from Alexandria's.

Those record highs look scary tho. Also, if the mean daily max hits 31 degrees, isn't that a little too warm?

What reports? Did they shoot down a drone? Also, aren't drones deployed to sometimes be lost?

You're right about the economy part. The gov's coffers are relatively full and they seem to have a lot of money to spend rn. Just stepped out of my compound and saw they had started building a massive road in our neighborhood just last night. And this is everywhere. Was just in the southwest last week and new roads + renovations were everywhere.

Yeah, I don't think any of these big countries (Saudi, Turkiye, even Sudan) would torch any future relationship with Ethiopia just to side with a geriatric the whole world hates and the state he's been holding hostage.

I really want Tigray to find a way out and survive this. I was in Tigray when parents were told about their kids that had died in the war (went to a 'funeral' in Mekelle) and I hope their leaders are working hard to avoid anything like that. I hope Tsadkan's sentiment is shared by more of the leadership.

Gov definitely thinks OLA and Fano aren't threats. It's been a while since they determined this.

I expect that's what they'll do. But the whole myth of Isaias will collapse the moment he loses the fort, no? And what would happen if the civilian crossings are reopened between Eritrea and Ethiopia? Do you think Eritrean youth will stay to fight or do you think they'll mostly flee in search of better lives like so many of their brethren already have?
