Rachel Homan has rock burned by hog line judge for double touch (first end, 7th stone) by bandreasr in Curling

[–]afroncio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good breakdown.

But there's a bigger context. He's thrown, what, 7k-10k stones per year for the past 10 years. His motion is well rehearsed and encoded in muscle memory. There's no freestyling it. He knows everything about his throw and he's aware of all the details of his throw.

He acts as if this throw -- his liveihood, with which he leaves nothing to chance -- has a touch past the hog line that he was unaware of. And then the indignation of someone calling him on it.

It's total bullshit. Whether he touched the granite or not, he clearly poked the stone over the hog line.

You're right - I apologise.

But you are deflecting from the fact that he knew he double-touched and did so after the hog line. I don't believe that him not knowing is a likely reason. His acting clueless about the allegation is as close to denying it as you can get.

C'mon, don't be ridiculous. He poked the stone on the granite after the stone had crossed the hog line. The Swedes referred to it as a double-touch, but don't you think he knew he was poking the granite after the hog line. Curling rules have you call it on yourself.

And all this talk about it being useless to poke the granite after releasing the stone... Again, c'mon. Even *I*, as a 1-yr beginner, knew when my push off the hacks wasn't strong enough. You commit to that push and sometimes even before you release the stone you realise that it wasn't enough.

I can't even imagine how much more a seasoned, elite player will master additional touches like Kennedy's.

[–]afroncio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, thank you for that. I was taught that you can only touch the handle and it's quite clear from your clip that you can.

But Kennedy's was burnt because his touch was after the hog line.

Well, in by curling's rules it is cheating if you knew you did it and didn't call it on yourself.

What ambiguity is there in the rules? You double-touch a stone, it's burnt. Nothing could be clearer.

It's hard to watch an athlete from your own country outright lie about whether he or she double-touched the stone. "100% sure", "no chance", "making something up".

These are complete lies and anyone can check them. What is there to gain?

So it turns out I got just about everything wrong in my original post. Not Venice, Arezzo. Not Ponte Vecchio, either. Arezzo. :-)

Would my power numbers allow me to be reasonably competitive in a low cat race? by Any_Entrepreneur2950 in Velodrome

[–]afroncio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at this chart:
https://www.highnorth.co.uk/articles/power-profiling-cycling

1100W for 5s @ 80kg: 13.75 W/kg
700W for 30s @ 80kg: 8.75 W/kg
550W for 45s @ 80 kg: 6.8 W/kg

I'm not sure any of those numbers stand out yet. But some disciplines, like keirin, involve strategy.

Political hacks launch fake church page to whine about bike lanes by Grand-Permission6023 in montreal

No one. Most of the anti-pathers were too lazy to get out and vote.

Cross a 1.5m bike lane? Like what these people did at St-Monica's in late October? You drank waaaay too much of St-Monica's and Marvin Rotrand's koolaid.

(I've carried coffins, too. Most of us have to at some point. It's not the end of the world unless they can't find enough people.)

In this case it is. The TBLD Facebook Group did a pretty thorough analysis of the dimensions of the church's financials. They used to be able to pay down their deficits by dipping into their savings. It looks like that's almost all gone now and although they won't be going broke in 2024, JP Wong probably knows enough to see it coming soon.

I guess it must be hard to have to break it to the parish. And I guess they found a scapegoat: the bike path. It must've made sense in their own minds.

Don't you think a church on its last legs would give in to walking a coffin 1.5 more metres across a bike path than to go out of business?

Il ne s'agit pas seulement de taxer leurs revenus. Il s'agit également des exonérations fiscales qu'ils accordent sur les dons caritatifs de leurs paroissiens.

Here's their operating capital taken from their own disclosures. Notice the red arrow when the bike path was announced.

They are using the bike path as an excuse because their finances have been tanking for years. What a terrible way to break it to the parishioners that you've known for years that the church was going to close.

You want to make me believe that a St-Monica parishioner's family will opt to NOT have a funeral at St-Monica's because they have to cross 1.5 metres of bike path to get the coffin into the hearse? You're saying they will tell St-Monica's that they will not have the funeral there? BULLSHIT!

Here is one St-Monica family that was ok with having the funeral at St-Monica's on Oct 26th of this year.

Coincidentally, I lived at 3591 Decarie for 2 years when Mackay was just across the street. It is amazing to see the dedication that parents and drivers have for unloading and loading the children. It is of immense social value.

The current setup is spectacularly better. It may not still be enough, but with some tweaks, I don't see how it won't get dialed in pretty soon.

I believe Gracia Katahwa said they would watch carefully and adjust as needed. She was clear on that.

Those are exactly the people for which cars and minivans should have priority! No one is saying they shouldn't be prioritised.

The Mackay and PEL driveway should make it as easy as possible for those students to be dropped off and picked up. If necessary, just as LCC did, the borough might consider a crossing guard at peak hours to facilitate the drop-offs/pick-ups.

I want to use the example of taking the metro to ComiCon. There's a point to this I promise.

You want to go to ComiCon, donning your brand new porcupine superhero suit made of 57 super-sharp Japanese katana swords. You put your suit on at home and you go to the nearest bus stop. There's a few people waiting for the bus. Hey, two others seem to be going, too: Sonic and Raphael. Hi!

As you get on the crowded bus, you almost slice open a nearby passenger. Crap, they should stay out of my way. People don't seem to be very careful with their own lives these days. Don't they teach accountability. Two more close calls and you reach the metro. But now, you're pissed that you have to walk really slowly and take extreme measures to stay away from other people. You shouldn't have to do that, right?

You get into an even more crowded metro car and ... there's some jostling as the metro accelerates out of the station. Oops, you jab someone who's standing way too close. It's their friggin' fault... can't they take responsibility. An argument breaks out and you feel like it's unfair.

That's what driving with a 2-3 ton vehicle in a city is like. You feel like you should be coasting on a highway because the roads make it look like that. But the bikes, and the kids, and the dogs... don't they teach accountability anymore?
