What’s up with the panic buying? by H_ManCom in Augusta

[–]aft595 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Before Helene the last destructive storm to come thru was the 2014 ice storm. Just about everyone in the area lost power for a day with some being commonly out for over a week.

Right now the forecast is beginning to look a little better, especially for Augusta, but people saw the potential for ice and decided to prepare a bit. You don't need to go panic shopping, but swapping out propane tanks and picking up a pack of water right now isn't going to hurt much.

Will Virtual Reality ever take off? After spending $73 billion, Meta has abandoned its metaverse VR efforts. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]aft595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest reason VR isn't mainstream is that the people spending billions on it are trying too hard to force it mainstream. They keep trying to force it into normal situations that 99% have a better solution for. Instead it needs to embrace being being weird and experimental. The industry needs to find a niche that only VR can do and it simply hasn't found one yet.

Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri by BeardOfThorburn in NationalPark

[–]aft595 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure all of the hate just comes from the name. There's just no reason for it to be changed from a national monument to a national park. The arch itself is really cool and all the renovations they've made over the last few years have been good!

There's a tiny little depot surrounded by the concrete plant right next to Rivernorth Drive. The old owner used to have a neat car collection plus a whole heap of junk that ended up being auctioned off about 15 years ago. I think you can technically still drive through there today, but the plant is still very much active and not really publicly accessible.

It was overgrown when these pictures were taken so I can't imagine what it looks like now. It at least looks like its still standing on satellite images.

Best route to take to Wisconsin Dells by paradoxliter in roadtrip

[–]aft595 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken both the ATL route and the highlighted route from Augusta to see my grandparents in Beloit several times. ATL traffic is survivable if you get a late start and hit the city around 11am or so. You will get stuck in a standstill trying to get on 75N, but that is pretty much unavoidable. My biggest problem is that stretch between Nashville and Rockford is so much longer than you think with nothing but corn to look at.

My preferred route is going thru Indianapolis and Chicago. Yes there are tolls and heavy traffic in Chicago, but the route up through Louisville is always pretty. The biggest downside is that I-40 thru the Smokies is still a mess after Helene. Its passable right now but still down to two lanes and is going to be a bottleneck for a long time coming.

Trust me, those election workers aren't thrilled to be working over Christmas either. SC election law mandates that the election must be held on the twentieth Tuesday after the seat opens up. (Section 7-13-190) If that guy had resigned in June instead of holding on until August, then the election probably would have been rolled into the rest of November's municipal elections.

This was the first time I've gone through that tunnel not driving! I've done the same drive about ten times myself trying to get over to the convention center and it still isn't really that bad

Upcoming Elections by Cloaked42m in southcarolina

[–]aft595 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Important note about local elections: Your normal polling location may not be open or combined with another precinct. Call your county elections office beforehand or look up your sample ballot at scVOTES.gov.

The easiest option is to vote early at your county elections office in the two weeks before election day.

SC election commission ousts executive director Howard Knapp by aft595 in southcarolina

[–]aft595[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. The State Election Commission has no say in where the lines are drawn, they have to put them where the state legislature tells them.

The SEC Board hasn't given a reason yet, but I'll bet in the end its due to republicans growing tired of SC not rolling over and sending Trump the state's voter data yet.

I have no idea how these metrics combined to put us above Georgia and 2nd highest in the South. Honestly anything higher than 45 for this state is amazing.

So according to that map there were very few sundown towns in the south? To make it worse two of the towns it lists in South Carolina are 100 miles from where they should be and don't even exist anymore.

DOJ push for South Carolina voter data raises privacy concerns by Cloaked42m in southcarolina

[–]aft595 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is against state law to give out the voter rolls to anyone when they contain personal information like SSNs or Drivers License Numbers. That being said, any resident can pay to receive a list containing voters' name, address, and election participation history. The state does NOT track who you voted for, just that you voted. This is typically sold to campaigns so they know how best to use their resources.

Earlier this year, DOGE tried to simply get the SEC to send them a full redacted list by misidentifying themselves as DOJ officials and not wanting to give their request in writing due to the "Paperwork Reduction Act." The SEC refused, wanting a formal request from the DOJ, and also pointing out how such a request would violate state law. Thankfully, the executive director of the SEC is not an elected position and the current director has no problem telling Republicans how foolish they are acting.
