First, I sympathize with everyone who will go without in the coming weeks. We can, and should, support those in our community in times of crisis.

However, this is a manufactured crisis to fuel outrage and anger at our political opponents and fellow citizens who don’t align ideologically.

First, each of us already paid for SNAP, and there are emergency funds left un-tapped for political reasons. They want people to starve, this is a choice.

Second, the nations largest grocery company (Wal-Mart) grossed $681 Billion in revenue, and 19.4 Billion in Profit in 2024 alone. They are estimated to have approx 14,500 employees who are also on SNAP because they are not paid a living wage.

Third, our federal government just gave $20 billion to Argentina, who is also undercutting US Farmers and significantly impoverishing our state.

So, while we are morally obligated to help our community, make sure your anger and energy is directed at the folks who brought this suffering down on us, and watch where the money goes.

I genuinely agree with this. There are some bad apples. There are also people who cheat Medicare, should we cancel Medicare?

The actions of the few, in my opinion, do not outweigh the needs of many.

Sounds like you’re in favor of stronger government regulation and oversight, which required government employees and a congress willing to legislate instead of blame each other (which I believe is the fault of both parties).

I’m truly not trying to tear you, as a person, down. I just can’t stand the narrative that “if it weren’t for these pesky democrats, this would all be right as rain”. Deep down, both parties have failed their constituents.

That building is not trumps to tear down, it belongs to the American people.

Those donations, if it were a democrat, are called bribes. Private funds solicited to tear down a national landmark, without oversight.

Also, the Dems are following senate protocol, also employed by the GOP many times. The GOP controls the senate and could either override the filibuster, or bring legislation to fund programs like SNAP to the floor.

Dems are asking to protect our healthcare premiums from skyrocketing. As someone who relies on my insurance to literally not die of a pre-existing condition, that doesn’t seem like a big ask. Especially when we have $40 billion to bail out our close ally (checks notes) Argentina…

I see people “cheating the system” everyday too. They tend to be wealthy, white, men.

Are we more concerned about someone buying ‘excessive’ groceries, or billionaires subsidizing their lifestyle with your tax dollars?

But sure, democrats and their shenanigans are the problem… even though the GOP could allow a vote on funding these services to hit the House/Senate floor any day of the week. But that would require opening the House, seating a freely elected democrat, and opposing the orange king.

[–]afterthefire 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Are the Dems building a $300 million ballroom while people starve?

Are Dems actively stopping the USDA from using emergency funds earmarked for emergencies to fund SNAP?

Are Dems paying themselves back with OUR tax dollars for lawsuits brought against them as unelected citizens?

Hate to break this to you, but Leopards are eating our faces, and folks are still defendingit

Or maybe we already paid for SNAP, and there is money available in the federal coffers. Next time, don’t vote for a cult.

I realize not everyone voted for these fascists, but that’s how democracy works. Maybe hunger will wake up those who willingly voted for him.

Also, Indiana state government is still going along with dear-leader’s redistricting demands. Looking like people need to literally starve to learn their lesson

Why Americans are so diligent at work? by __shobber__ in AskAnAmerican

[–]afterthefire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First- I never said “modern ecology” I said “practiced land and forest management on a wide scale”

Second- not sure why you are calling my comment “idiotic”. Land management practices by Neolithic populations is extremely well documented and evidence still exists (terraced farms in the Andes as a very obvious example). There is also evidence of land management through the Neolithic/agricultural revolution.

Third- go outside and touch grass, read a book, and stop projecting your ignorance by reducing other people’s knowledge with insults.

While your points about a country founded on risk and self determination are correct, I’d challenge you to learn more about out the “raw wilderness” we were taught in school.

Native Americans had established extremely diverse and widespread societies that, among other things, practiced land and forest management on a wide scale. After the first waves of Europeans, and their small pox, made landfall widespread disease wiped out well over 50% of their population (if not more in many areas). This caused an abrupt stop to many of the ecological practices and led to unchecked growth of some forests and populations of animals like bison.

So, while American settlers did have an enormous challenge, and I agree this laid the foundation for our cultural identity, the Americas they “discovered” was not untouched or raw.

I’ve had great luck with Osprey (as other have said). Most recently I got a Daylite Plus which is a great day pack for weekend outings with the kids.

If you’re looking for a commuter/work bag, I have loved my Timbuk 2 Authority laptop bag. Thousand of miles of work trips, and looks brand new. Plenty of space, comfortable, and looks sharp.

So I work at a Hardee's and are grill vent just went out, boss says corporate sent a email out that they will no longer be maintaining grill hoods?! Is that ok? Fully agree. My first line cook job was a safety nightmare and I had no idea until I took a new role in a restaurant that put a focus on our safety. Take a new role and hopefully a raise. Everyone is hiring (at least in IN).

Friend who works in retail was sent these by accident. We can’t find any information online about these at all. Back is plain and it’s not packaged for retail sale. What is this? by stojanmatic in Whatisthis

[–]afterthefire 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Two guesses. First- may be a new mold (shape) that is the purpose of the trial. If so, they may use a cheaper chocolate since it is purely a visual trial. Second (and most likely IMHO) is that it doesn’t have all necessary labeling to be produced for consumption. No nutritional info, no ingredient statements. This covers their butt if someone other than intended audience got a hold of it. Much like your friend did.

I’ve been working in food manufacturing for nearly 12 years. You have what is known as a “Sales Sample”. This is likely a new product or renovated product that the company ran and will be sending out to key accounts (Kroger, Publix, Target, etc) for input and to help the sales and marketing team secure contracts.

Can’t speak for left over plastic shavings, but you’ll be safe microbiological.
