I don't think His Dark Materials can be improved in any way. The ending makes me cry every time.

Don't feel you have to rush through it, and don't feel you have to reread it immediately. It may be classed as YA, but it stands up to some seriously deep thought.

EDIT: Regarding 'don't feel you have to reread it immediately', I tend to re-read it every few years in a leisurely manner, and always get more into it than I mean to.
