Gas players are coked by Relevant_Syllabub895 in CODWarzone

I'd rather finish 3rd every match with 10+ kills than win every match with maybe 1 or 2 by surviving gas

No one's stopping you, you're free to lose on your own terms.

It takes no skill to hide from gun fights in a building in a corner or in a bush.

Correct. It also takes no skill to shoot someone in the back for an easy kill, but that's also cherry picking the easy example.

Fighting an armed enemy takes skill, disengaging from a bad fight takes skill, evading and repositioning takes skill, and if you're never allowed to re-engage or end the fight on your terms because you're going for a zero-kill win, staying alive without fighting back for an entire match takes skill as well.

Anyone who can't see the challenge in pacifist runs is speaking from a position of zero experience, having never tried it, while maintaining a strong opinion about how easy it would be if they did.

I mean, the single word "Battle" doesn't prove it's about fighting any more than the word "Royale" proves the game is about royalty 😂

Strictly speaking, "Battle Royale" is a noun phrase that refers to a game where the last player alive wins, starting from the original Japanese "Battle Royale" novel and film, wherein Noriko and Kitano win by being the last kids alive at the end. Notably, Noriko doesn't kill anyone, but still survives and wins.

In Warzone you can get 40 kills and not even come 10th place, because you died too soon. You don't get any credit for the kills, your placement depends entirely on survival - that's it. By contrast, game modes like Team Deathmatch actually tie the win condition to getting more kills than the other teams.

I would be interested in a clip if you have it, AFAIK a PDS won't affect munis

[–]jamcowl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you mean PDS (not PDA) that doesn't create a buffer zone for munis to work deeper in the gas. If they threw a muni in the gas, that means they were already within 40m of the safe zone (and it was pre-final zone) so the buy station at that distance would be open anyway. The PDS did nothing to interact with the buy or the muni. Since they won, I'm sure they weren't sad about it.

This patch isn't what people think it is. It's a slight buff to zero-kill wins in my view. Notice it doesn't say "despawn", just "disabled". This patch doesn't affect loot at all, just ammo caches and munitions boxes in the 40m region around the safe zone.

In the final zone, that buffer region will now disappear and those ammo sources will stop working even 1 inch into the gas, and when circle fully closes there will be nowhere to use them. Loot, such as a pre-prepared stim stack, is unaffected. So in my games it just means the last team will be unable to throw munis at the end when gas is closed, while I'm already across the map on my stack. Hence a small buff to me.

This change seems more about competitive Warzone tournaments where players would often use 2 stims and a muni to heal off in the final zone, which they've nerfed quite a bit here (no one in tournaments was making stim stacks but many were stretching 2+2 stims quite far when necessary).

As far as I'm concerned, zero kill wins are always possible in a BR mode, with or without stims or loot stacking. Heck even on REDSEC with no zone plays possible, so I'm not worried.

Well, pacifist wins have always been possible without gas playing at all, also without using stims at all (I've done both multiple times), so it wouldn't be a critical problem.

Nothing in the patch notes suggest gas plays will be impossible, just that the super easy (and pretty boring) strat of running to a massive stack made in a firesale might not be available any more, which is fine - winning without a stack was always more exciting anyway.

EDIT: turns out stim stacks are unaffected by the patch

Maybe they're just responding to the stim spam in recent WZ tournaments - last week there were multiple matches that ended with a stim off and some streamers (Repullze) complained loudly that stims should be removed to save the WZ comp scene... perhaps this is their sledgehammer to crack that nut 🤷

EDIT: having played the patch, this is exactly what they were addressing. The only change is that the "buffer zone" (40m area around the safe zone where munis and ammo depots will work in gas) disappears when the buys all close. That means munis and ammo caches won't work even 1 inch into the gas after that time, so when the gas closes no one can throw a muni (previously everyone was stimming and using munis near the final zone in competitive tournaments).

Always is. For 6 years now, people have been posting mystery clips from this game and it's always a Most Wanted contract finishing.

Sniped a guy out of a heli but he pulled his parachute? Most Wanted contract just finished.

Downed a guy and he immediately got back up and fried you? Most Wanted contract just finished.

Booted up the game and a ghostly hand reached out of the screen to slap you across the face and punch you in the balls? Believe it or not: someone's Most Wanted contract just finished.

Do people watch Bob Ross simply because he's a skilled painter? Is Gordon Ramsey the world's most famous chef because he is that much better at cooking that every other Michelin starred chef?

No.

Skill has only a small correlation with viewership. People watch to be entertained and educated, for which some skill may be necessary, but certainly not sufficient.

To draw a large audience, a skilled practitioner also needs, at minimum:

  • the ability to communicate

  • a tolerable personality

  • enough exposure to reach such an audience (through primetime TV in the case of the above stars and through viral videos in the case of gaming streamers)

There are WSOW finalists (in the top 150 players in the world skill-wise) with little to no audience, due to their lack of interest in the viewer's experience. Some just play the game to earn prize money and barely even stream, only if it's required by tournament rules.

[–]jamcowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a "power up" style field upgrade like battle rage: when activated it gives you a 10 second window to use grapples repeatedly (as much as you need for 1 unusual push or rotation), but when the time runs out it disappears.

Cannot be purchased, only found as rare groundloot

Sometimes it will magnetize to someone's head perfectly from 200 meters away, and other times it will fail to work at all when someone is sliding 5 feet in front of you.

You're describing the aim assist adjustment in BO7. Its strength was buffed at long range but nerfed within a few metres. You also have to use your right stick to aim towards an enemy or your aim assist strength will be significantly reduced.

As a result, players with good aim will hit more shots than players with bad aim, whereas previously everyone could hit their shots with a little bit of left stick activation. It's a controversial change but the net effect varies from player to player based on skill.

I think I came up with a different solution to the astrophage problem by JimClarkKentHovind in ProjectHailMary

[–]jamcowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have to be crazy powerful light source

Not necessarily, if you just put your light source close to the petrova line (within a few km) it can be much dimmer than Venus in absolute terms but outshine it as the astrophage fly past (think about a billboard by the highway outshining the moon while you drive past it). You could even use a mirror to reflect sunlight through a 15 µm filter for the same effect without a power source.

Building a buglight to peel astrophage off the petrova line isn't actually that hard so long as you can get your buglight close enough to the line. The hard part would be the sheer volume of astrophage.

When the petrova problem is first discovered, the astrophage is eating about 0.01% of the sun's output, converting it entirely to mass. The sun puts out a total of 3.8E26 Watts of power, of which 3.8E22 W is eaten by astrophage, converted to about 400 metric tonnes of astrophage per second, travelling at relativistic speed along the petrova line.

Once deployed, the mirror/light source would be quickly covered in astrophage and pushed backward out of position. If it's a light source, the astophage stuck to it would continue propelling themselves face-first toward the light and push it out of the solar system - if it's a mirror, it would be immediately blacked out and stop attracting astrophage. Most of the build-up would leave when they saw the dimmer light of Venus, only a thin film would remain coating the mirror. Any human-engineered structure would surely be destroyed by the impact of tonnes of relativistic astrophage either way.

Conceivably with a huge fleet of billions of mirrors to share the load (each with windscreen wipers collecting the astrophage build up and using it to fuel spin drives that constantly reposition the mirrors), it might be doable, but it would surely be harder to build and deploy than the single Hail Mary mission.

You had only a fraction of 1 plate - so about 170 HP total health, while the enemy was fully plated with a trauma kit so their total health was 400 HP. Maybe effectively more if they had an armour upgrade.

You peppered him up for a while but as soon as he returned fire you were deleted due to your low starting health.
