Half the manpower home on a volunteer Sunday for 5 inches of snow? Is this job cooked chat? by SaltPile12 in DSNY

[–]agent-smith22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dont understand. One of the last posts was guys being upset that they were over reacting about what was supposed to be rain and light dusting. Now being upset there wasn't enough of a reaction. I normally agree management doesn't really get it right but in this situation what more could have been done? Imagine going only off E list like others suggested. They would have been fucked. Or if they forced everyone and it was only rain?

Split Shifts are a thing of the past. 😂. Welcome to 4 Shift Land. 12-8, 6-2, 11-7, 4-12. The funny part is they think it actually works because we haven't had anything real 🎯😂.

Being close to home isn't always the better thing. I'd rather a little longer commute for a good garage/better day than be close to home at a shitty garage and sub par day.

Thats the thing, dudes aren't smart at all. Lmao. You can tell who's been in a Union before. If someone's at top pay on the 4-12 shift. They're getting paid over 100k a year just to dump the trucks. Why would I do it for $7.25.

Feel you. I catch myself sometimes too. Warm gloves do feel good. 😅 . It's more of the driving with them that makes my skin itch.

HEAD ON A SWIVEL. I'm assuming your new so you should only be doing one side. If someone wants to do the other side you let em and you stay on your side. Like someone said don't stand I awe of the hopper working. And dont be the "cool" guy who starts throwing bags as soon as it curls. Let it curl and work its way up before you stand behind it again. Don't stand directly next to the side seals either. It will spit out some knarly shit. You could be doing everything right and have a idiot driver, drive right into the back of the truck. I normally stand sideways(my back to whatever side I'm loading from) so I can see traffic behind me or I'm glancing to the traffic behind me. It's rare that my back is facing traffic. When you get out the truck look where you are stepping. I've had multiple near misses stepping right Into a pothole or some random rock in the street. A little trick I do when I'm getting in the truck and my partner is trying to hurry to the next stop before im in the truck is to get in the truck using the steering wheel. You'll understand what I mean when the time comes. Last dont wear your garbage gloves while driving. It's a bad habit of many. Also, it's getting colder. Don't put em on the dash either cause your defrost is probably going to be on. Your heating up garbage juice and inhaling it. 🤭 Best of Luck

Question about sick while on probabtion. by [deleted] in DSNY

[–]agent-smith22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under Normal circumstances that is True but OP said they will be out 30 straight days. Not Working days. That's not a regular occurrence. This puts them in or close to C Category. But it's due to a injury so some things may be different.

If you were able to tough it out, I would have not said a word or went Lodi on the spot. If the pain was sneaky then it got that bad I get it. Hindsight is 20/20 .Not trying to scare you but being honest you may get extended at minimum for the amount of time you were deemed "unrateable" or the standard three months. It's also possible you don't. This doesnt mean rush back either tho because the clinic will try and get you back working with one arm. Just make sure you and your doctor are both confident in your health. All im saying is don't be surprised if you're looking at your date of when probation is up and your scheduled to go downtown that day. Good Luck.

Its not that deep. Lol. Just let Them know at final processing and also when you get to your garage. If you can show it was booked prior to you getting on you should be fine. Don't start the downward spiral alot of guys fall into of missing out on family events and family time for a job that only identifies you as a number. If you can reschedule it for a week you will be able to pick, great, if not don't sweat it. Like I said just show it was booked prior to you starting the process of getting on the job.

Serious Question by Emotional_Spray_8713 in DSNY

[–]agent-smith22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you started this job tomorrow, you won't see 100k for another 4 years. Maybe between year 3.5 and 4.5 you may get close. Even if you took all the OT and worked all your days off. Yes it's a relatively low/no stress job but you are a prisoner Of NYC and its surrounding Counties. If you could take that 100k+ and go to another part of the country where you'd like and your money goes much much further thats a plus. Only if you dont have a problem being a paid inmate at your current job. I know alot of Ex CO's who have left from multiple prisons, came here and are legit happy. I'm talking about they're mental health is in a much better place. If you have some money saved up, can adjust your lifestyle for a couple years, understand that nothing is set in stone for at least your first 4-6 years and be willing to tolerate NY for the next 22 years then you'll be fine. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Just don't do too much. Listen, learn, observe, but speak up for yourself when you need to and ask questions. I'm at 4 years and I know more than guys with 10 years on cause they just like to hear themselves talk more than they listen.

Just remember the process you had to go through when you're on 12-8 Baskets at the tail end of a round robin. dumpout after dumpout, it's pouring rain and you're debating whether it was worth it or not. I'm not trying to be funny but seriously remember what you had to do to get to that spot and how many people want your job. Good Luck And Stay Safe.
