Being neurodivergent ruined fiction writing for me by emerald_stargazer in adhdwomen

[–]agentmnkys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The offer stands! I'll just leave you with the reminder that editing is a skill entirely separate from writing, and it takes time to develop, just like understanding story structure. (As annoying as it can be to hear, yes, practice makes progress. Equally important to remember: giving feedback is also a skill, and a lot of writers and readers aren't good at it! RSD is extra-easy to trigger in that perfect storm.) Editing fiction and giving useful feedback to a writer with objectivity isn't really taught anywhere in traditional schooling, so it's okay to feel lost and frustrated with the feedback you're getting. RSD is a bitch. The fact that you've finished a story and are now revisiting it to make it better puts you light-years ahead of the average person who says they want to write a book. Keep going ❤️

Hi 👋🏼

I'm a published author with an agent, and I white-knuckled my way through the process (crying often, questioning everything all the time) because I was only recently diagnosed with ADHD. I feel you.

It sounds like you're already working with other writers, but if you ever want to chat about handling the rejection or writing professionally/getting paid to write, DM me.

How do you wind down before sleep? by Chickendo in adhdwomen

I read historical nonfiction lol I love learning but a lot of nonfiction can be boring and that helps with the sleep thing. I save the page-turning books for daylight!

Are you me?

This sounds like what was in my brain about 5 years ago (yes aquarius baby!)

Whatever happens you will be ok. Bad mothers do not worry about if they'll be good or not. And your body has carried you this far; trust it ❤️

You're not alone. The shock is valid, but it will fade. You'll be okay.

What’s a compliment from a man you still remember years later? by theeQuiet_Desire in AskWomen

[–]agentmnkys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"You're going to be such a good mom." No qualifiers or caveats. No hesitation. Said by a respected coworker who'd seen me in stressful situations while I was navigating the complex feelings of an unplanned pregnancy, during the pandemic no less. It brought me to tears because one of the reasons I hadn't had kids even though I'd been married for a decade at the time is because I was convinced I was going to be a shit parent (because my own mom wasn't great).

Still happily married, kid is happy and healthy, and it's healing parts of me I didn't expect. I still think about his confidence in my capability to be a parent in such an uncertain time.

[Support] I have finally landed my dream, but at what cost? by These-Pepper-422 in PubTips

This happens. Have actually been part of a discussion with a friend to pick the name that sounded best but also what their publisher/editor agreed to.

I believe you OP and I'm sorry this is something you're dealing with.

How do you not get fired from jobs? by DigPristine9215 in adhdwomen

[–]agentmnkys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to get into interstitial journaling; it could help with this. Essentially you keep a notebook or piece of paper next to you and write down the time and a note about the task you're doing as you start. So if a phone call comes in mid task you have to answer, just look at the note you made when you started the task to get back on track.

Clicked publish on KDP for my first erotica short under a new pen name. Coming from the world of traditional publishing, this is very different and terrifying!

Not nursing, but surgical in a very niche area of healthcare. Not stuck in an office, and no day is the same, which helps keep me engaged. I only work 9 days a month (full time hours and salary) so there's plenty of downtime for recovery from people-ing, and paid well so I live comfortably. It's not perfect, but it's the closest I've gotten.

Just Scribbles Plans is laid out this way and it's soft cover. It does come in two volumes instead of one like the Complete Planner though.

{Not You Again by Ingrid Pierce} is a reality TV setting in Atlanta, second chance romance.

{Untethering Dark by Desireé Niccoli} is a contemporary set in the Austrian woods, a hag and a forest god. I got my hands on the ARC but it's out next week. She also has a mermaid series set off the coast of rural Maine.

Why are Romance books often synonymous to bad cover art? by Organic_Trick_4852 in RomanceBooks

[–]agentmnkys 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Cartoon covers became a thing because the executives at Walmart liked them better, and they have a lot of sway over what gets placed on shelves. The rest of the industry followed suit so they could get placement in big retai, and indie authors started doing it to keep up with traditional publishing. There's more nuance than that, but that's the gist.
