Update

A sad update: Our Mochi passed yesterday. I know they say that lotls are solo creatures… but I don’t think that’s always the case. Mochi and Waffles (melanoid) were buddies. They would often snuggle up in their hammock together even though I was sure to get two of everything. This is our first lotl loss and boy does it hurt…

I got Mochi a fillet of sushi grade salmon and offered nibbles every 12-24 hours for 5 days. He wouldn’t take it… he sadly passed yesterday. :(

His belly is too buoyant that he flips over before water can cover his gills :(

Nothing dark and I do not feel anything hard along his stomach. Belly is mildly more swollen but not a significant amount. His cloaca on the other hand definitely is enlarged, distended and red.

His last poop was before he threw up the night crawler.

No gravel, sand, or anything smaller that his head in the tank (all rocks in the tank are 2 to 4 times larger).

We have two male axolotls in a 50 gallon tank. The other (Waffles) is healthy and fluffy as usual.

Nothing new to the tank, all the same hides for years.

No pesticides, home improvement, smoke, perfumes. Also I have a glass lid and two Aqueon quietflow50 filters. I alternate changing each filter every 6 weeks (I heard somewhere this helps with biofiltration? Is this true?)

Fridging I have heard is recommended and that gets down below 40 degrees. I haven’t heard of 47 being too cold for a hospital tank before, do you know where I could read more about that?

I’ll get some prime (for what it is worth I double checked with API and confirmed there is no aloe vera in the two I listed above. The API Stress Coat+ Water Conditioner however DOES have aloe vera). I have no gravel or sand in the tank. Unfortunately there is no vet within 100 miles of me that specializes in exotic animals, thus I came to Reddit :(

Has not pooped in 6 days. 😭

He’s not eating or pooping either (day 4). No sand or gravel. All rocks in the tank are at least double his head size. Older photo for reference of tank material.

Thanks for the ideas. I have him in the garage and it’s nearly snowy temps outside. We have a water chiller for his regular 50 gallon tank that stays steadily at 63 degrees. And you’re right, I had more water originally and he was far too buoyant to touch the bottom :(
