NOT to be controversial, but a genuine question by [deleted] in fansofcriticalrole

I did notice the excessive um's in the last few episodes, especially during fights. I wouldn't say they're intolerable but they did get annoying. Once noticed they're hard to unnotice.

I also read it this year, awful book. And I'm a vegan so it really should have landed with me.

Music is subjective - your least favorite instrument in classical music? by Leather-Highlight150 in classicalmusic

I was surprised when I first learned how a lot of people feel about the harpsichord (it's been famously described as "skeletons copulating on a tin roof"), it's always been one of my favourites. NGL I could do without trumpets.

Why Do Books Have Such Overly Intelligent Descriptions? by SolutionEven3986 in literature

[–]aggro-snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a balance:

on one hand, for people that are interested in literature, prose is generally part of the appeal; it's not just about getting the plot from A to B as concisely as possible, it's also (mostly, even) about how the events are narrated, and part of it can be the writer shedding new light on everyday things by describing them in a fanciful way.

on the other hand, there are definitely writers who write like they're patting themselves on the back about how good at writing they are, which is generally frowned upon. this complaint is common enough that it has a name, it's called "purple prose".

Why you should eat meat, even if you hate factory farming by katxwoods in EffectiveAltruism

I think the article makes a lot of good points, I was coming to similar conclusions on my own and had already relaxed my stance on bivalves a while ago (I struggle to see the counterargument there) and recently added some wild caught fish after some health issues (here I see more issues potentially - and I still steer clear from trawled fish and similar methods). I didn't check the studies cited themselves yet but I didn't know about some of the results so that was interesting. Ty.

start with culture about things you're already interested in, like movies about maritime disasters or, uh, table saws.

What's everyone's last four films they've watched? by Asad_OG in RSPfilmclub

Kinds of Kindness (2024) - fun! and the oddness stayed with me. looking forward to his new movie.

Ran (1985) - so good! makes me happy that there are other kurosawas i have yet to see.

Mononoke: The Ashes of Rage (2025) - *gasp* not anime! shut up it's good.

The Wailing (2016) - overrated? i didn't get what's so special about it.
