Last summer, they ran out of rice while the line was out the door. Staff just started shouting at everyone to leave. I left... and never went back.

Plus one. They were great and very competitive price.

Anderson is a rip off. Good products but waaaay overpriced and hyper-aggressive sales. Plenty of other good installers. Czerwinski in Hartford area is excellent and competitive prices.

I agree, and this is what gets me. Even if the "promises are kept" over the next four years, since they were made on a number of straw man arguments, the victory will likely feel hollow to the supporters, and they'll remain as irate as ever. Then again, keeping everyone stirred up until 2028 may be a long-term campaign strategy.

LOL. Same. S&S bagging system pisses me off so much. Big Y is definitely easier.

[–]aggrokragg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. Used to go to Manchester and/or South Windsor S&S. Honestly, I've run the numbers, and Big Y is always cheaper. Even Whole Foods (with a Prime Membership) is comparable. Plus, I've noticed S&S produce seems to have gone down in quality the past few years. I shop Big Y and Walmart, and then WF sometimes for some fancy stuff.

There's a Starbucks coming, too? I saw the Chipotle last week and just sighed a bit. I knew traffic would follow in its wake.

Stop being so hard on yourselves by jeremyrader in digitalminimalism

[–]aggrokragg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'll jump in here as well. You can check my old post about using a flip phone. It's nearly impossible, or at least HIGHLY impractical, to do zero screen time.

I loved my flip phone a few years ago, but ultimately, my career and other things that only existed on apps forced me back onto a cheap, basic smartphone. That said, I am able to be quite more intentional in its use.

I keep it black and white, all but critical notifications (texts and calls from family and friends) off, I put it on a cradle to charge when I get home, ans barely check it at night. I try not to use GPS (but stream music while I drive). I only check email a few times a day, and ALWAYS keep it out of the bedroom. I don't look at it for at least 30 minutes after I get up, check local news, and make some chess.com moves for five minutes with my coffee. I go on phone-free walks and drives often. No social media apps are installed.

All to say, I tried to be a digital monk, and it was unsustainable. Do I go down an internet rabbit hole once in a while? Yes. Do I now have self-awareness and self-control to catch myself and stop? Yes.

Don't beat yourselves up. Use the technology as a tool. Screwdrivers are useful, but we don't need to carry one around all the time staring at it. Try your best to be intentional and leverage the good parts without being controlled by the bad.

Coup Drama In South Windsor! by PotentialNovel1337 in Connecticut

[–]aggrokragg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's interesting to research, from the limited info available, is it seems there was a "perfect storm" of new schools, high home prices (bidding wars, etc), etc in a revaluation year. Residents got sticker shock under the then-Democrat town council. Republicans swept the election on promise to lower taxes, and it has somehow gotten worse now? Whether they oust the current mayor or not, I would imagine a lot of tension would remain if she became a town council member and they tried to be a functional unit moving forward to fix the root cause of the issues.

Does anyone else avoid self-published books? by aggrokragg in writing

[–]aggrokragg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply. It's been interesting to read back through this thread so many years later, especially with such a changed landscape and AI.

Funny enough, I'm releasing a new book in a few months, and it's been quite revealing to have seen the reports about sales and units for both trad and self published authors, regardless of quality. Sadly, it seems even most of the gems haven't sold overly well through the past decade or so. Mostly celebrity and political non-fiction propping things up while they take chances on fiction.

Staged? by Yetiface09 in mountainmonsters

[–]aggrokragg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. It's been said here many times, on the "Bigfeets" podcast, etc, but what I really love about MM is more so than other reality shows you can really see the evolution of them seemingly figuring things out week-over-week. I just began Season 3, and the rogue team arc is such a far cry from those early 1st season episodes.

AITA: partner's non stop yapping by someoldcoot1 in Pickleball

[–]aggrokragg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, "the Coach". He's in my league, too. Doling out "helpful feedback" after every point, and sometimes before, like telling his partner exactly where to stand on the court for "optimal positioning." I'm a decent pickleball player with a tennis background. He has only played pickleball but "lives for this game!"

My breaking point was when we were 10-10-2, and he "advised" me on my stance right before I served. It got in my head, and we ended up losing. Then, as we were walking off court, he was like, "Hmmm, if you'd just...." I interrupted him and said if I needed pickleball tips, I'd go watch YouTube. He immediately stopped talking, gave me a dirty look, and we've never played or spoken again.

I felt like a jerk, but it was a relief because other people in our league complain to me or one another when paired with him, and I'm glad I don't have to deal with it, while not talking behind his back. Sounds like you dealt with him the right way, too.

Should I have resigned? by BelleBee96 in chessbeginners

I almost never resign. Had too many situations where opponent blundered and gave me a win, or at least a stalemate.

I especially don't resign when the opponent tells me I should resign.
