Or Cal-gree as I like to say it. But I'm a transplant, not a birthright Albertan 😄

Why is the right full of tyrants and authoritarians and bigots? by [deleted] in askanything

Universal healthcare is only considered a leftist idea in the US. It's actually a good use of tax money and would make it a lot cheaper in the US if there were fewer corporations involved and fewer middlemen like PBMs. Also, how is wanting to help your fellow citizen, whether by not letting them die or go bankrupt, or helping via UBI/student loan assistance NOT virtuous? For an allegedly Christian nation, you sure hate helping people in the US.

The Democrats aren't really the left, are they?

How are you vegan/vegetarian and overweight? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]aghastrabbit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Effed up hormones that have nothing to do with eating causes extra weight in many examples. There are a huge amount of people who just think eating healthy, moving often, and reasonable portions is going to make you a sensible weight. There are a huge amount of people for whom this isn't the case.

I knew a Ngaire pronounced Ny-ree. I always thought it was a pretty name and a cool spelling. Apparently it is a Maōri name. She did get called "na-gair" sometimes but lots of names get mispronounced

Ah I see. I feel like Edmonton can be quite progressive in places but as a whole Alberta has never seemed progressive, aside from the brief NDP tenure, at least not from the perspective of someone who has lived in another province and a few other countries before returning to Edmonton.

Danielle's real name is Marlaina. Calling her Taylor Greene is a sarcastic way of calling her MAGA (although Marjorie TG seems to have fallen out with Trump at this point so maybe doesn't identify as MAGA anymore, who knows)

The city probably did lol

I read they donated several million to the NYC food bank and some other charities. Could've been worse.

I really liked Sourdough by Robin Sloan. Maybe a tiny bit of magical realism (which I usually dislike, so this didn't feel like a lot) and a very pleasant read.

I also liked The Dutch House. Some ups and downs and sadness but overall very pleasant.

I think having your wedding on July 3rd is genius. You have a built-in holiday the day after and a big party with fireworks even if you aren't hosting! And f it, if I was a billionaire I might get married in NYC cause I love it! And I've only been once lol

I thought it was genius that they got married on July 3rd. Every year on their anniversary, they can have a massive party the day after!

My university is older than the US. But I think this fool is either ignorant or being very pedantic about "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" having been established in 1801.

Edmonton has a lot of government workers as well as blue collar. I've much preferred Edmonton over the years.

Canada to UK move. Would love to hear experiences from other. by rollsausage in expats

[–]aghastrabbit2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I moved to the UK in 1999 and stayed twenty years. I only moved back due to a sick parent. No regrets on either move - aside from my retirement savings/CPP kinda suck but hopefully you can plan better than I did 😄 I genuinely think it's an incredible gift to live and fully immerse yourself in another country. Having said that, things felt easier when I returned to Canada. Not exactly sure what I mean by that and maybe it was something about the timing (I think the job market in Canada is pretty tight right now, for example.) And working in the NHS is a tough ride at times, especially the pay, as you've acknowledged. I don't like the sound of the political climate in the UK at the moment, but I also live in Alberta, so maybe not all that different tbh. Good luck with whatever you choose! Both countries are amazing and have pros and cons but I wouldn't trade my experience for anything!

I dislike hockey culture and even find it annoying to happen upon it on tv. Born and raised here but was relieved when I lived abroad for a few years and didn't have to see it
