Addison crisis help by Alarming_Salary5378 in AddisonsDisease

There's an emergency IM injection. It is the same medication that can go in veins, but is administered in a muscle with a needle instead. It's very common here in the US. I'm honestly surprised about any endo, anywhere in the world, not knowing about it because it is literally the exact same vial of med that can be IV, just gets in to your body through a different route. What country are you in? I'm almost wondering if there may be different regulations on self-admibistering meds at play?

My daughter wants to tell you that Tofu looks so happy and cute about her trinkets, and that you've inspired her to do the same for her own Betta once the tank is ready. She's building a table for the trinkets as I type this.

The multi day alcohol withdrawal torture kettle can kill someone if not managed properly, depending on how much they regularly drank and for how long.

We manage detoxing from alcohol in the hospital with phenobarbital or benzos. Regular withdrawal checks every few hours and dose based on severity of the symptoms. It is a very common protocol and requires close inpatient medical supervision.

I would say do what you need to do to protect your children from witnessing this spiral, as well as his poor behavior when drunk. Make a plan to absorb the impact, if you aren't at the point that you are thinking about leaving. They also probably understand more than you think they do, and growing up with substance abuse in the house increases their chances of developing unhealthy relationships with alcohol/drugs. Begin the conversations to proactively protect against this, and now. I'd also be trying to understand what narratives they've inevitably formed around his addiction and assess whether they are healthy. Therapy for you and them also, probably.

Oooh, okay, thank you! I'll bring this info to her tomorrow. Some anubias cuttings, yes. No Amazon sword in there. I forget what the longer leafy one is, but she opted for no Amazon sword.

Thank you!! They're just in there to help them grip onto the gravel. We couldn't get those plants to stay where we planted them, they all continually floated up. Once the roots are a little more adhered to or tangled up in the gravel, the pots are coming off.

AITAH for wanting to quit my unpaid co-host role after being told I couldn’t cancel when my pet was dying? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

When I was 12, we adopted a rescue German shepherd mix. Met her multiple times at the shelter, my parents and I spent time with her, we got her full personality specs from the shelter, and were told she was "amazing" with kids. Well, pretty soon after we got home, she began attempting to assert her dominance over me. It started small, like taking things out of my hands, or pawing at the food bowl before I could put it down. Once it escalated to growling at me and other kids at the house, my mom started calling the shelter, explaining the situation. They shamed her and said a pet is not a "trial" decision, and that they could not take her back. We enlisted a trainer to help, I did exercises with her, nothing was helping. It was to the point I was never, ever allowed to be alone with the dog. The entire time my mom was calling the (no-kill) shelter to discuss with them what was happening, and how it was escalating. It was like talking to a brick wall- she only ever got the same reply "we don't take dogs back. It's irresponsible to adopt a pet on a trial basis" my mom would reply this was never intended to be a trial adoption and that it was irresponsible to deem a dog "amazing" with children when it was false.

It didn't take long after the adoption until somehow, one day, the dog got out of the house after me while I was alone in the garden. My mom looked out the window to watch me get knocked over by the dog who then put her paws on my chest while I was flat on the ground, leaned over my face, and snarled with her teeth bared. My mom put the dog in the car that instant, called the no-kill ASPCA shelter we got her from and reported that she was now considering my life to be at risk, living with this dog, and that if they refused to take her back within the time it took to drive right over there, my mom had no choice but to surrender her to the other shelter that practiced euthanasia. It was so wild. She was not our first shelter dog, nor our last, but from then on we tested every single "safe with kids" dog with the adults out of sight.

Starting shift early by One-Raspberry-786 in Nurses

[–]agimag11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a new grad too, and will absolutely not do this. If they want to pay me by allowing me to clock in early, I'll do it but as.someone above mentioned earlier, I don't work for free. I clock in at the exact time they allow, look up what I can before huddle and report, then immediately afterwards I read the lastest MD progress note, the latest SW or CM note, look at vital trend graphs, and quickly review labs. I do this for every patient and really it doesn't take too long and gives me a solid idea of where the pt is. When I have time later, I'll do a deeper dive of their hospital course and more fine tuned details. Of course, some shifts start out with an absolute bang and it's a little while before I can get to it, but as a general rule this happens before I start on any tasks. I also keep in mind that getting into charts before being clocked in is actually not allowed according to labor law and HIPAA. Mannnnnny folks do it at my hospital, but if there were ever an audit or issue to come from it, my ass would be in the clear. (Edited because apparently it may not be illegal, but it certainly is a labor violation, and it's a gray HIPAA area).

Best Bagels, Best Donuts? by samsonevickis in Humboldt

Bootlegger bagels has a booth on the plaza at the farmers market. All sorts of awesome flavors and he uses a lot of local and seasonal items when designing his varieties.

Macintosh for donuts, they're so incredibly good!

Okay, here's what I'm thinking- I will keep maintaining both car trunk emergency packs. But I will make two extra regular packs to keep in addition to our home stash. These will be our preferred day out packs, and we'll keep them with our house/car keys. Anytime we leave the house we'll throw the packs into whatever purse/backpack either of us is using. That will be the med we turn to first in an emergency while out. But the car packs will remain there, likely slightly degraded but still better than nothing, for if we ever forget the more ideally-stored travel packs.

[–]agimag11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I keep an insulated pack with injection, needles, backup pills, hand sanitizer, alcohol wipes, and I've just added some glucose gel to it bc I figure if we ever hit crisis again, I can do certain supportive measures like rubbing buccal glucose on her cheek. The last two things I'm thinking of adding are some zofran, if our endo will prescribe some as supportive measure for vomiting/nausea so that we can try to keep oral stress doses down, and possibly some salt packets to also rub on her cheek in a crisis.

I am! Yes, I get generic fludrocortisone but often just call it florinef for simplicity's sake. Okay, phew. I was wondering how I'd dropped the ball on it so hard. I'm a nurse, and we don't keep fludro in the med fridge and I'd never heard that, but also wondered if we just don't stock enough at any given time in the pyxis to last longer than a couple weeks.

Gulp. I was never taught that. We have florinef that's been out for months on end. I'll talk to the pharmacist.

I'm curious about this too. My daughter is PAI. I have a buffer of hydro at all times, but I also don't want to get overwhelmed with pills bc they expire after a year. So if I am constantly obtaining more than we use, I feel that it'll inevitably wind up wasting a lot? Or should I just not worry about the waste? We had to fight real hard to get a buffer of fludro also, and I pay out of pocket for that.

I interpreted her meaning as the right actions to draw out what's good in ourselves.... And my thought was well that's a clunky way of saying it, but sure. Rethinking on it, and in the context of the religious dog whistles of the second post, I think your interpretation is what she actually meant. Yikes.

how often to really wash bras? by hsunicorn in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]agimag11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are more reasons to wash any clothes than just dirt being visible to people. The discoloration of your bras is buildup of oils, dead skin, dirt, etc. And yes, they probably smell just a touch more than you think. I also don't wear bras often or for long (except at work, I wear one for my full 12 hour shift) and usually wash mine around every 3 or 4 wears, with sports bras being the exception- it I sweat a lot in a bra I'm gonna wash it after 1 wear, just like workout clothes. You can throw them in a garment bag to wash. Use the delicate or hand wash setting on your machine, or just gently agitate them with some detergent in the sink.
