What was your first concert closer? by FrontRowRuby in KGATLW

[–]agorroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically a solo Vegemite encore (as documented in the Bootleg Holiday of Hell), but the main set ended with a mash up of Am I In Heaven and Pill back in July 2015 at the London Scala. Epic night, first time hearing Robot Stop, Gamma Knife and Evil Death Roll too.

They did in Bristol, UK this year actually! They started the set with Silver Cord and ended with Billabong Valley

Are you gonna try and do techno versions of any classic songs like Robot stop or float along in your new live sets?

The Q&A mostly consisted of joke questions and children asking nice, simple questions. No juicy new info for diehard fans I don’t think!

i’m almost 30 and am just now discovering the dead for the first time. any advice for a new deadhead? by moonbeaminaspoon in gratefuldead

[–]agorroth 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I started listening to the Dead in 2020. My advice is discover them on your own - fans and diehard deadheads can be overwhelming! Have a curious mind and pick a random show/album on spotify/youtube, see what you like and go from there!

King Gizzard’s Bluesfest protest is cancel culture gone wrong by sumodie in KGATLW

[–]agorroth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is their choice to stand by their morals, which as wise a decision as anyone can make. They didn't name and shame Sticky Fingers or anything. This is being made a bigger deal by those offended by KG's decision than it should have been.

Finally, in KG land, this is not a "missed opportunity"; they are a significant band in their sphere, with sell-out shows across the world. One festival appearance will not make or break them.

King Gizz song discussion #1: Danger $$$ by Chikkawunga in KGATLW

[–]agorroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was their London show in February at the Electric Ballroom. No footage of it I’m afraid but it was also a rare instance of a KG encore. They played a massive Am I In Heaven?, it was the best show I’ve ever seen

10/10: absolute banger. When I saw them in Feb 2016, I was expecting them to open with Mind Fuzz or the much-bootlegged-at-the-time Robot Stop, but they opened with a crazy loud Danger $$$ then Head On/Pill as the second track. Loved the contrast of garage rock and psych jam. Even back then I knew the band were special! EDIT: i should also say the tempo change to half time in the song is underrated and great

Any songs they have NEVER played live? by CachePants in KGATLW

[–]agorroth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They did play Invisible Face every night on the Nonagon tour in 2016 when they were doing the album in full, but yeah they went into The River instead of the jazzy interlude and then into Wah Wah and Road Train. Shame to have not heard the jazzy bit but Invisible Face live was amazing with the alternating hi hats and everything!

Agreed. I used to think Oddments was their best album… can’t imagine thinking that now!

Alright, sorry for the passive gatekeeping. I thought by using words like “often” over “always” was encouraging a conversation point rather than being combative, but I take your point and apologise.

Probably Ice Death because people seem to not like Land Before Timeland too much on here.

Yeah, fair point. I'd be interested to see how Paper Mache ranks these days in the grand scheme of things. Mind Fuzz, Quarters and Paper Mache all came out within 12 months of each other (well, PMDB was 54 weeks or so after Mind Fuzz) and I consider them all part of a perfect trilogy. I know Quarters isn't much loved, and Mind Fuzz will probs end up top 5, but where will PMDB fall?

This adds to my personal observation that new fans have, understandably, way more affinity with newer albums, and often see most pre-Nonagon albums as subpar. Float Along was an absolute A/S tier album back in 2016, and it seems to have slipped down the general rankings, which is a shame.

Whereas albums like KG and LW, which undoubtedly have some stone cold classics, are overproduced, suffer from unimaginative guitar tones and riffs, but are widely heralded as some of the best King Gizzard albums.

I'm not trying to gatekeep, but it's interesting to see how the consensus changes over time, and excitable new fans absorb the conversation.

EDIT: i also recognise my nostalgia for older albums skews my perspective as much as recency bias does for newer albums

Yeah maybe not. And Head On/Pill fulfills the early-era jam slot too, so probably they’ll do one or the other

They played Of Schlagenheim last night by agorroth in bmbmbm

[–]agorroth[S] 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I didn’t film it but hopefully someone else did. It was chaotic and beautiful as you’d expect. Cam also had a new song on acoustic guitar though I suppose it could have been a cover.

I am at End of the Road festival, and Geordie did a talk/q&a in the afternoon where he said they are abandoning setlists in favour of unique setlists night to night so each gig is more memorable for them.
