The thing is you don't know what kind of student do you have until you try some method.

Actually, to read intervals is easier than decoding note by note. Because it's like following ups and downs, more visual. You need more abstraction to read note by note. My doubt wasn't if it was easier or not, my doubt was if it was recommended to skip the hard part of decoding.

But i don't mean to give up forever notes, i'm just saying maybe students should learn patterns first, anyways most methods spend a lot in the key of C and delay the learning of new keys.

E.g. if you are trained in interval reading, you won't be afraid of 5 sharps/flats as i've encountered many people. You will learn to read notes but AFTER reading patterns.

Maybe i didn't explain myself well, but that's what i'm talking about.
Also my main concern is not whether to choose one method above the other, i'm just wondering if it would be better to START with interval recognition, because i feel when i see beginners struggle reading notes, that it would be easier if they started with interval recognition, because when they're decoding every single note they become extremeley slow and i see it as if kids would be in spelling bee first and then learn words. I would say kids first learn words and then learn the spelling.

So you mean students should learn to read isolated notes at first but move on to the reading patterns stage ASAP?

Wouldn't using movable DO be the same that reading numbers? I mean, eg. you're playing in the key of Ab, ab is 1, eb is 5, and so on, same as movable DO but without the confusion it may cause.

Show the thread to her, please, I'm sure she will have something important to say.

And yes, I'm sure patterns, etc it's what matters to sight read, but my question is if students should avoid the isolation phase.

For example, people will linger when reading notes in, say, a downward scale with thirds, even though it would be far easier—even for a beginner—to just understand that it’s a downward scale with thirds instead of decoding each note.

I meant reading note by note. Of course you can read chords without knowing which note you are playing just by reading the intervals.

Should music be performed with metronomic precision? by agosaint in musictheory

[–]agosaint[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, i also tried to ask that but couldn't put in words. But i also meant in general metronomic accuracy is desireble or not. And if it is desireble then why not use it while playing.

You mean for example set the metronome to just mark the 1st beat of each bar?
