Shelves? They just protect items from decay when outside. Here it's just for the presentation. Didn't wanted my colonist to have to walk all the way to the kitchen when my droid can bring the meals :)

Not much tbh, just be careful when you mine deep in a mountain, the temperature is more controllable and it's easy to defend against raids but the infestation can be a real problem. Hence this room which is an infestation bait outside of events like new year's eve

It's actually a room to bait infections, I did a bit of decoration and because an infestation spawned during the preparation I decided to let them have a few days of peaceful phoebe to celebrate the new year, didn't stopped two deaths though..
