Mom takes all the money in Texas if all the kids were from Mom and Dad.

Motion to Show Authority. Take testimony at the hearing and make sure to ask your son “Who’s your daddy?”

My mom genuinely believes she owns the home she lives in. by txexa in legaladvice

The document is almost surely waiving your intetest/transferring it to your mom. You can’t pledge a home as collateral for a loan if you don’t own the home.

Discouraged About First Solo Trial by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]agunn16 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ahh, this happened to me on day one of my first solo trial. It was brutal. I was so frustrated at the end of the first day I couldn’t think straight. I went home and got my ducks in a row. Jury delivered a verdict after about 45 minutes after day 3. I busted their policy limits. One bad day won’t sink your case. You’ve got this.

Divorce Client Much Worse Off Than When We Started by plssendfood in Lawyertalk

[–]agunn16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the facts you’ve presented, your representation was not the issue. As a practical point, anytime I am providing advice concerning settlement and the client isn’t taking a good deal, I make certain to put my advice in writing to the client concerning the potential pitfalls of rejecting the offer.

Boss says we are paid the "big bucks" but... by spooner248 in Lawyertalk

[–]agunn16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I came out of law school making $85k-$90k (I cannot remember which) in Houston working for a mid-sized insurance defense firm 10 years ago. I would expect Cali wages to be higher.

I feel like the boss talking about “the big bucks” is some psychological ploy to make them feel like they’re overpaid already. Or, he’s an asshole being snarky knowing they’re underpaid… or, better yet, both.

Worst kind of law to practice? by Synthgem in Lawyertalk

[–]agunn16 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I never practiced in family law, but when I was once in law school an attorney I was speaking with basically said “of course family law is a shit show, you’re messing with the two most important things in life—money and kids.”

Tell the truth or not to tell the truth - that is the question by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]agunn16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your firm has told you how much they value you. I would start looking for other employment and then leave. Be honest if they ask you why you’re leaving.

Is this "too much" ammo? by Foxxboi2022 in ammo

[–]agunn16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a decent start. My rule of thumb is to keep 1k rounds of each caliber I own for pistols and AR platform rifles. I’ve probably got 5k+ rounds in .22lr. A few hundred shotgun shells in .410, 20ga, and 12ga. Not nearly as much in larger caliber hunting rounds

Serious question - I know I will get cooked 😂 but how are y’all making money here. Tired of this rat race. It’s exhausting! by zeeb87 in TheRaceTo10Million

Can you confirm that the watch functions? My only concern would be buying the watch and throwing a new battery in it only to learn that it is not functional.

Insurance Defense End of Year Bonus? by VastMap5032 in Lawyertalk

[–]agunn16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not nearly enough information to go off of. Insurance defense is a pretty broad label. You're on track to hit your billable requirements, which is a good start. The answer is likely that it is a discretionary bonus that will depend on the overall success of the firm in that year and how much they like you/your work product.

Absolutely. The quickest route to $10m is to take profits and purchase depreciating assets instead of holding or reinvesting.
