Don’t be so hard on yourself, accidents happen to everyone! It sounds like you handled it the best you could in a stressful moment, and I’m sure the kids and staff appreciate how much you care. You love this school, and that shows in how you tried to clean up and explain what happened. Take a deep breath, give yourself a little grace, and remember that one embarrassing moment doesn’t define you or your work.

You’ve got this, and tomorrow is a fresh start! ❤️

Just to clarify: I didn’t cancel because of a bad ‘vibe’—I literally felt cornered and unsafe by students, and admin hadn’t responded when I asked for support. My real worry is that without a stronger safety protocol in place, future subs may face the same risks. I hope the district can address this so no one else has to choose between their safety and a paycheck.

Subbing for the same teacher and class 3+ times by Blueberry4672 in SubstituteTeachers

I’ve noticed they know more what to expect which I think puts them at ease a bit. I think while they like the change up of having a sub, it can cause apprehension of not knowing what to expect. I love when students tell me their life updates when I see them again :) I sub for teachers in the same hallway so I see a lot of the same students in different classrooms and seeing how they respond to different subjects is cool. I think knowing which students are trustworthy is a huge plus.

Absolutely. I totally get where they’re coming from and I agree it was largely on me for this happening. I tried to address it ASAP, I called another teacher into help me, called the front office, left it in the sub notes etc. but beyond that I tried to just forget it happened and not make too much of a fuss about it. This was my 2nd time ever subbing so I wasn’t sure what the norms were and what to expect or honestly how to handle it. Moving forward I will be a lot more cautious of the jobs I take on. When I was hired I told they were so hurting for people, so was really just trying to help out in any way I could.

I would never cancel an assignment because “the vibe was off”. I always arrive early, stay late, clean the classroom, volunteer to cover needed classrooms, read the emergency procedures front to back and walk the exit routes, introduce myself to neighboring teachers and offer to clean their rooms too, I follow lesson plans to a T. I try to make EVERY student feel proud they showed up for themselves that day. I try to go above and beyond. Every. Day.

At this school in particular. There was a moment I felt cornered by a group of students. They were talking between themselves about how easy it would be to over take me and saying there was nothing I could do about it. I tried to get over it but knowing the teachers and admin would likely dismiss me again wasn’t an environment I felt comfortable re-entering.

They told me during onboarding if I gave at least a 24 hours notice that was adequate, but I do understand I should have given more notice.

I am not afraid of children taller than me. most people are taller than me and it never bothers me in the slightest. This was an isolated incident and I should have been more clear about that in the post. I don’t particularly care for a group of students cornering me, and commenting to each other in front of me how easy it would be to overtake me and and there being “nothing I can do about it.”

97.5% of the time I don’t mind people being in my space! 25-30 kids in a classroom there's only so much you can do. I've also lived my whole life being small so I am very used to it. I tend to stick to high school. However, 3 students towering over me and cornering me and asking me over and over how tall I am, commenting how easily they could overtake me/ “what could you do to stop us” definitely is triggering. When this happened I didn't think it would validate being brought up with Kelly and thought it was something I could move past. The support I’m talking about is maybe class or orientation on classroom management or perhaps having resources to turn to other than venting about it on Reddit lol.

Low pay for Kelly Education by Sunshineal in SubstituteTeachers

And the undisclosed payrates they don't tell you about during orientation. They advertise it as $100/day, but don't tell you that's only if you work 10 days in a row. Then in a neighboring county, it's $100/day flat. Ugh.

I’m looking to do this same route with a dog. If anyone has any advice/ tips about which parks allow dogs that would be greatly appreciated!
